Stamford plans for the Jaycees sponsored cleanup drive in June 1926 progress with Ted Myers as general chairman. Volunteers will collect trash and refuse, urge citizens to clean and repair around premises and vacant lots, and employers will support the effort.
Commencement for the Daily Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church will occur Wednesday night June 16 at the regular prayer meeting hour. Classes run through Thursday June 17 with a noon picnic closing. Enrollment stands at 119 with about 115 attending daily, under Rev. Miles B. Hays and a staff including Glen Sutton as principal and numerous department superintendents and workers listed.
Four members of St. John's Methodist Church attended the Youth Assembly at McMurry College in Abilene this week. Irene Stewart from the city also served as an instructor. Walter Cox presided over the Methodist Youth Fellowship. Ethylene Kelley led the Worship Commission. Doris Johnson headed the Recreation Commission. Robert Dickenson participated as a key delegate.
North Side Baptist Church reports 87 children enrolled in the Daily Vacation Bible School. Mrs. O B Boone, principal, says Friday closes with a picnic after noon and a program and exhibit Friday night.
Rev and Mrs A G Fitzgerald returned Sunday night from Seattle where they attended the General Assembly of the USA Presbyterian Church. They were joined by Rev Eld er of Strawn as a presbytery commissioner. En route they visited Mrs Fitzgerald's sister Mrs Carl Thelin in Miranda California and her husband, and in Port land Oregon the party nearly faced a washed out highway. They also stopped in Raton New Mexico to visit Mrs Fitzgerald's sister Mrs Geo Phillips. The journey barely passed through as water covered the highway at Portland.
Alton McClellan plans a weekend trip to Austin to pick up Mrs. McClellan who has stayed there two weeks with their son Alton McClellan Jr and his family. A son Robert Franklin was born in an Austin hospital on May 29 weighing seven pounds five ounces to Mr and Mrs Alton McClellan Jr. The mother is Betty Jo Mahood and the older child Susan Kay returned to Austin with grandparents and will visit back for a few weeks.
Dorothy Yates plans a trip to Dallas to join sorority sister Adella Upchurch then head to Boulder Colorado for the first half of the summer term from June 21 to July 23 at the University of Colorado.
Mr and Mrs W E Robinson recently spent a few days at Odessa with their son Jack Robinson and his wife.
W G Morris owner of the Western Auto Store on North Swenson avenue plans to sell the business and family home on Vanderbilt street as they prepare to move to Arlington. The store opened June 13, 1936 and has operated for 12 years. The Morris family including Mrs Morris and daughter Gradelyn will relocate to Arlington where they have bought a home and have been active in First Baptist church work.
A large Stamford Jaycees chapter will attend the Abilene Club installation banquet Saturday night where John B. Shepherd is scheduled to address the group.
Jack Norman attended the Texas Chamber of Commerce Managers convention in Wichita June 6 and 7. Mrs. K K Francis and family planned a two week visit in Tulsa and Broken Bow Oklahoma, with Jeannine returning from Texas Tech, Lubbock.
Swimming classes begin Monday at the municipal pool with Mrs. John Bennett as instructor. Beginners meet 9 to 10 am and swimmers 10 to 11 am each Monday Wednesday and Friday. admission is 10 cents.
Stamford chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star installed new officers in a formal service at the Masonic hall last Friday night. Margaret Culp became worthy matron and FE Pace the worthy patron, with numerous officers including Mrs. Culp, Mrs. Izell, Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Massey and Mrs. Railey named to key roles. After the ceremony, retiring officers were honored with a march and gifts, and entertainment followed with songs and a reception for more than seven attendees.
A daughter, Laura Lee Herndon, was born to Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Herndon of Anson at Stamford Sanitarium in June. The infant weighed eight pounds, fifteen ounces. The Herndon family formerly lived in Stamford. Elizabeth Glover of Lubbock visits her aunt Mrs. Richard Lane. Mrs. Glover, choir director at First Christian Church in Lubbock, is in Fort Worth for a choir school.
A. Y. Busby of Fort Worth, formerly in Stamford two years, visited relatives including his sister Mrs. Clifford Stewart in Hamlin. He is recuperating from injuries sustained in a recent accident in which he was severely hurt.
Charles Thompson, home briefly between semestres at Texas Tech in Lubbock, returned to campus Wednesday. His mother Mrs. M. D. Thompson and Mrs. E. B. Britton accompanied him back to Lubbock.
Gene Morgan daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray Morgan has entered Texas Christian University Fort Worth for the summer. She is a spring graduate of Stamford High School.
Adele Geer, a University of Texas student, visited her mother Mrs. Teresa Geer between semesters.
Stamford set for a week of games at the home field with a doubleheader league clash against Baldridge of Lubbock and a Friday negro game between Stamford Blue Sox and Ballinger. Stamford recently won the league opener over San Angelo 1 to 0 in nine innings, while San Angelo won the nightcap 4 to 1. A Wednesday kid game saw Bill Longley’s boys beat the Boy Scouts 6 to 4 in 10 innings.
Stamford retailers will stay open until 9 PM on Saturdays after a Retail Trade Committee meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last Thursday. Weekday hours stay 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
Wheat harvest continues with 82 cars of grain sent by rail this period. Avoca contributed 2 cars, Tuxedo 6, and Sagerton about 25. Quality and quantity have improved and nearing completion after recent hot days.
Jacob Emil Gerloff veteran farmer of Stonewall county died from a personal safety related gunshot wound at his Old Glory home. An inquest was held. funeral planned for June 10 at Old Glory Baptist Church with Kinney Funeral Home handling burial in Old Brandenburg cemetery. Survived by wife Katie, four sons Raymond Jack Cecil Roy Eugene, and mother Mrs Emma Gerloff. WWI veteran of Company EF 141st Infantry. born Yoakum March 20 1892.
H D St John of American National Life Insurance Co won an expense-paid trip for himself Mrs St John and Jackie to New Orleans for the company convention set for June 30 to July 3. The award followed his January sales leadership across the United States.
Mrs Welby Callicoatte director of the choir at St John s Methodist Church and Mrs N M Phy organist attend a five day church music school in Fort Worth this week. Instructors come from eastern universities.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Whitt in San Angelo Tuesday night at Shannon-West Memorial Hospital. The baby weighed six pounds four ounces. Mrs. Whitt, a Shannon-West graduate, moved to San Angelo around June 1 and has been staying with Mr. Whitt's mother Mrs. H. B. Whitt. The baby's other grandmother is Mrs. L. O. Davis of Breckenridge.
Peggy Jeanette, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert L Reves, born June 1 at Stamford Sanitarium. Paternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs C L Reves of Leeders, maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs John E Martin of Beeville. Stanley Reese, formerly at Texas A&M, to attend six weeks ROTC camp at Camp Hood starting June 19. he visits with his parents Mr and Mrs Earl Keese.
Mr and Mrs Charlie Frank Williams returned to Fort Worth Wednesday night after visiting Mrs C F Williams mother of Mr Williams and other relatives and friends in the area.
Bill Teague, serving as state representative for Jones and Shackelford counties, relied on a telegram to Albany and Anson Democratic chairs as the May 17 filing deadline neared. Albany received it on time, Anson a day late, but since sent before the deadline his name remains on the ballot with no opponents.
Jones county plans to complete the cancer fund drive by June 30. County chairman Jack Rowland cites a $1274 local quota with Stamford $674 and Anson and Hamlin each $800. Local drive leaders include Jack Norman as chairman, James Waggoner as Stamford treasurer, and Gene Spurgin as county treasurer. The American Cancer Society, organized in 1913, supports education, research, and treatment with Texas division led by ex governor W. P. Hobby.
Herb Carter, a senior at Texas A and M, received his commission as second lieutenant in the field artillery, U S Army, last week at College Station. He will report to Fort Sill for ROTC camp instruction this summer after a home visit with family plus stopovers in Corsicana and Galveston.
Mes. E. H. Sims plans a Thursday trip by plane to Philadelphia to see her daughter Ensign Lauda Belle Sims, a Navy nurse. She will stay about 10 days.
South African Rotary speaker Henry Low told Rotarians in an inter city meeting that Americans as a group are poorly informed about world affairs citing a Gallup Poll. He compared Southern Rhodesia to Texas and urged reinvestment in European industry to ease global strain.

Mrs. P D Parks Jr who was stricken with infantile paralysis in Manila will be sent back to the United States. She travels with her husband 1st Lieut P D Parks Jr and their son Parry arriving San Francisco July 4 aboard the General Hope. They are to sail June 14. Mrs Parks is improved and will stay in San Francisco for further treatment. A daughter Janice Ann Thomas was born May 18 to Mr and Mrs Leo Thomas of Odessa. The baby’s mother is Barbara Ann McDougle daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles McDougle who formerly lived here. Joseph and Kay Thomas of Fort Worth are here attending Vautson Church school at St Johns Methodist Church and visit paternal grandmother Mrs R E Thomas and aunt Mrs R E Kuenstler.
The Stamford Jaycees will join a car parade leaving Stamford on Friday June 18 for a booster trip to Fort Worth tied to the Texas Cowboy Reunion. At the Wednesday luncheon Dr Ike Hudson spoke on health and sanitation outlining other towns efforts. Guest was Sanford Hodge Jr.
A J Bell Jr who has been blind since age sixteen learned from Dr Ramon Castroviejo in New York that nothing can be done to restore his sight. Bell, a graduate of the State School for the Blind and Hardin Simmons, remains hopeful of seeing one day and plans to return to Texas with his wife and son Morris.
The Camp Fire group sponsored a doll show and silver tea at the Youth Center on June 2 with 178 dolls entered by 40 girls in 19 divisions. Mary Tom Rainwater led with 19 entries, while Sharon Lane and Nancy Martin tied for first in the doll collection. The event featured an original puppet play “The Unhappy Clown” by Angela Tillotson and Gail Swenson, and a refreshment table for over 70 guests.
