Stamford creates seven member park board and Doghouse relocation talk

Stamford City Council approved ordinance 476 creating a seven member park board to advise on city parks and budget plans. The council also heard a proposal to move the Doghouse youth center from 600 E McHarg to 1095 S Wetherbee, with city leaders to study options.

Blood Bank mobilizes 63 pints at Tuesday drive

The Red Cross Blood Bank collected 63 pints at the Methodist Church on Tuesday, with 65 donors registered. First time donors came from Stamford, Aspermont, Haskell, Lueders, Rule, and Peacock. many locals and out of town volunteers helped push totals toward the goal.

Veterans in Jones County receive over a million dollars

A. V. Blue Womack told Rotarians that Jones County veterans and dependents collected more than one million dollars in benefits last year. He credited the increase to Vietnam era education benefits and outlined programs noting widows are treated as veterans. He explained pensions versus service connected compensation and their different payout rates.

Stamford High School launches summer employment program

Stamford High School has been approved for a summer employment program for disadvantaged youths aged 14 to 21. The program begins June 11 and received approval from the West Central Council of Government. Applications are available through the school superintendent or City Hall.

Stamford contractor to floodlight Jones County courthouse

Jerry Baldwin of Stamford will install ten floodlights at the Jones County courthouse for about 2500 dollars. The project covers four lights on the tower and six on the grounds with two on the north and south sides and one on the east and west sides.

Stamford to Host 1973 Texas Cowboy Reunion Figures

Mrs. Cindy Stenholm will serve as official hostess for the rodeo with Gail Prewit as Stamford’s sponsor. Stenholm will entertain visiting sponsors and ride in the opening parade, while Prewit participates in the parade and serves as sponsor for five years. Stenholm, married to Charles Stenholm, is a Stamford dairy farmer and co op manager and chairs the American Quarter Horse Show. Prewit is a Stamford High School graduate and West Texas State University horsemanship student and drill team member.

Street Seal Coat Delayed by Material Shortages

Public Works Superintendent Hob Dickenson said street seal coating in Stamford is postponed due to inability to obtain pea gravel. The city will use federal revenue sharing funds to buy materials while crews, already equipped, prepare a street list for treatment and weed control with weed killer.

Man suffers cut as Stamford factory burglary unfolds

Stamford police and the Jones County sheriff search for a suspect with a badly cut arm after an overnight entry at Stamford Manufacturing Co. Thieves pried open a vending machine top drawer and walked away with about 80 dollars. A box of shotgun shells and two guns were displaced, and a large blood pool was found near the freight area. Entry method remains under investigation.

Hospital District Election Up in Stamford

No word from Austin on whether Gov. Dolph Briscoe has signed the measure enabling Stamford Hospital District to call an election on enlarging its size. The bill passed as an emergency and becomes law upon signing, after which hospital board members will set the election date.

Former Lueders man found guilty in county court

Troy Thomas Long formerly of Lueders now of Odessa was found guilty of first offense driving while intoxicated in Jones County court. A Oct. 2, 1970 arrest by Patrolman Don Van Zandt led to the verdict delivered to Judge Leon Thurman by a four man two woman jury. Long received a $250 fine plus court costs and a 30 day probated jail term with six months probation. The jury is to return Friday for another trial.

Stamford Summer Recreation Program Begins Monday

The Stamford summer recreation program starts Monday at 8 a.m. in Stamford High School Gym with Coach Raymond Hughes and Kyle Childress directing. Registration opens at 8 a.m. Monday and runs through the week, with a June 15 deadline for ages six to 13.

Old Time Fiddlers Contest at Texas Cowboy Reunion

Amateur fiddlers aged 50 and over compete for cash prizes at the Texas Cowboy Reunion Old Time Fiddlers Contest. It starts July 4 at 9 30 am in Round-up Hall with 9 am registration. contestants play two breakdown tunes and prizes range from 50 to 15 dollars. A free noon chuck wagon dinner ticket is included.

Two SHS Grads to Receive Scholarships Totalling 1850

Stamford High School graduates Leth Brownfield and Jacob Vasquez were named 1973 TILE Foundation scholarship recipients. Brownfield earned a 1250 Houston Endowment Scholarship for achievements in informative speaking ready writing and drama while Vasquez earned a 600 George and Mary Hamman Foundation Scholarship for spelling and writing contests and overall academic excellence.
