Stamford civil defense plans monthly disaster siren tests on the first Friday at 12 30 p m. The High School Auditorium siren will be tested with spotters mapping coverage while a mobile unit supplements in emergencies. A $100 siren from James Dabney includes yipper wailer and high pitch settings.
Public mail boxes in Stamford have been repainted blue as part of a federal economy drive. James McCorkle, Stamford Post Office custodian, completed the painting which replaces the old red white and blue scheme with a uniform blue finish and decals.
The Stamford Inn, long run as a nursing home by Dr. Ike Hudson and Rev. Jack Southerland since 1963, has been sold to Pioneer Nursing Centers Itc. They plan a convalescent type home here by Christmas with Tucker Newland becoming manager. The 75 bed facility now houses 61 and several improvements were recently added.
Stamford High School honored top scholars and awarded Rotary Lions Exchange and club scholarships during Friday commencement. M'liss Brownfield was valedictorian with 97.45, Gary Walker salutatorian 96.85, and department winners include Jacob Vasquez and Lezlie Brownfield among others.
Bethany College youth ministry group from Lindsborg Kansas will perform at Bethel Lutheran Church on Tuesday June 9 at 7 30 p m. The nine student entertainers sing folk and gospel with varied instruments. They travel as a volunteer inter denominational team presenting faith based programs in churches and youth events.
Mrs Pauline Carlton a former Tuxedo resident and Retail Merchants Association collection clerk is hospitalized at St Marys of the Plains in Lubbock after being admitted Sunday afternoon and is responding to treatment.
Stamford police chief B Q Cooper told Rotarians that the department outperformed state averages. He cited a 100 percent murder clearance rate versus 86 statewide, plus higher rates in rape, aggravated assault, auto theft and other crimes. He noted a 95 average on officer training and 117 ambulance responses among other figures.
The Baker Brothers evangelistic team will lead a revival at First Baptist Church June 7 to 14. Morning services start at 7 am, weekday. evening services at 7:30 pm. Sunday 10:55 am and 7 pm. Each evening features a themed focus with a music concert after.
Stamford Junior Posse travels to Rotan on June 11 to join the Fischer County Sheriff Posse Rodeo and Parade. The group seeks another top finish after winning first place in Albany on May 30 as the Rotan parade starts at 5 p m.
Mrs. Lawton Bates 63, of Stamford, died 5:45 a.m. Wednesday at 609 E Campbell after a lengthy illness. Funeral 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Kinney Funeral Chapel with Rev. Van Gauthe of Avoca Baptist Church officiating. Burial Highland Memorial Cemetery. Born Dorcas King Oct 24 1906 in Arkansas she moved to Avoca in 1919. Survived by husband, three daughters, 10 grandchildren, one sister and one brother.
Calvary Baptist Church hosts a Vacation Bible School from June 8 to 12 with Rev. Jackie Barnett as principal. Preparation Day is June 6 at 10 a.m. Students ages 3 to 12 attend daily classes from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Parents Night closes the week June 12 at a p.m.
David Denton, son of Dr and Mrs FE B Denton of Houston, is visiting his grandparents Mr and Mrs J M Ashcroft.
Central West Texas counties report population declines with Stonewall leading at 32.6 percent drop from 3 017 to 2 359. Taylor County falls 4.5 percent from 101 078 to 96 463 while Jones County drops 18.6 percent to 19 303.
Graduation exercises will be held for Stamford Memorial Hospital School of Vocational Nursing at 8 p m June 12 at St John s United Methodist Church for 11 students. C E Brownfield Jr attorney at law will be speaker and Mrs Don Connally will present the diplomas. Instructors were Mrs Connally Mrs Ryland Gleaton and Mrs John E Newquist. Members of the class include Jo Ann Bennett Stamford Frankie Conner Hamlin Kathy Grimes Weinert Jo Ann James Stamford Janie Kelly Haskell Francis Langford Lueders Nellie Martinez Stamford Judy Simpson Stamford Avie Teague Hamlin Lillia Tidwell Stamford and Paty Mundell Munday. A reception will follow the ceremony in the church fellowship hall.
Rev. Tom Warren of Fort Worth leads Temple Baptist Church in an outside car accessible revival from June 8 to 12 at 8 p m. An outdoor public address system lets attendees sit in cars. Temple Baptist is located at 309 EB Campbell.
The Stamford Country Club announces Splash Day for members and guests on June 5. A barbecue dinner will be served at 6 30 p m.
County Judge Leon Thurman presided over Jones County Court docket Tuesday and accepted about 20 guilty pleas. Several driving while intoxicated defendants pleaded not guilty and requested jury trials, with future settings planned for mid July and further pleas scheduled for June 11 and June 16. The judge cautioned that this would not fully clear the docket due to unfinished cases and others involving insufficient checks or absent defendants.
