Summer school for non English speaking students opens June 5

Stamford will host a state funded summer program for non English speaking preschool children starting June 5 at Oliver Street Primary. Miss Mary Loughmiller returns as teacher with free enrollment for eligible children and bus transportation from Old Bomar Heights. Past classes averaged 24 students with highs to 60. the two month session ends July 30. The program, funded by a 1956 Texas bill, aims to teach English and build a 550 to 600 word vocabulary using phonograph records and assistance from older Latin American community girls.

Jones and Taylor Counties To Share Representatives

Jones County will share two state representatives with Taylor County after a Legislature redistricting bill. District 62 will cover Jones and Calhoun, with Haskell moved to Rep. Renal Rosson's district. The plan follows a court ruling on constitutional district lines and remains subject to further changes after the 1970 census.

Baby Born En Route to Stamford Hospital

An ambulance from Kinney rushes to a West Davenport Street house where Minnie Franklin gives birth to twin boys three blocks from Stamford Memorial Hospital. Ambulance attendant Fidom Osborn assists the delivery as driver George Kinney relays for a doctor and Tony Selmon meets the crew at the back door. The birth proceeds without incident.

Jack Mitchell Services Held Here Tuesday

Funeral service for Jack Mitchell 61 was held at the Four Square Church with Rev. John Russell officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery under Kinney Funeral Home. Mitchell a painter and paper hanger, died at Hamlin Memorial Hospital after two weeks illness. He was born March 24 1906 in Falls County and moved to Stamford in 1913. He married Viola Boring May 6 1933 at Haskell. Survivors include wife, one son Bobby, five daughters, 18 grandchildren, a brother and three sisters. Palbearers listed.

Farmers Reject Transfer of Cotton Allotments in Jones County

Cotton growers in Jones County reject a county only transfer plan with 699 votes against and 221 for via mail ballot. A two thirds affirmative vote was required for the proposal to carry, limiting transfers to within the county for the next year while allowing in county transfers from other counties and keeping inter county or out of state transfers restricted.

New Pastor Named for St. John's Methodist Church

Rev. Jerrell H. Sharp is named pastor of St. John's Methodist Church and will preach Sunday in Stamford. He replaces Eugene Matthews and will move with his family to Sundance Wyoming after a reception hosted by the Dorcas Class. He was born in Amarillo and trained at McMurry College and Iliff School of Theology. He previously served Blackwell Knox City and Wesley in Big Spring.

Wayne Baldwin Rites Planned Here Thursday

Funeral services for Wayne Baldwin will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Clyde Cook and Rev. W. G. Self officiating. Burial follows at Pioneer Cemetery in Graham under Kinney Funeral Home direction. Baldwin, a WWII veteran and Stamford resident, died Tuesday morning at Stamford Memorial Hospital after a heart attack. He was born April 15, 1913, in Jean, Texas, married Ina Mae Abbott in 1934, and had 11 years with the post office. Survivors include his wife, daughter Beverly, three brothers S L and C N of Graham and Roy of Abilene, two sisters, and pallbearers listed.

Bart Burnett Begins Duties As Stamford C of C Manager

Bart Burnett takes over as Stamford Chamber of Commerce manager today succeeding Jerry Hopkins who resigned March 15. Burnett, former Seymour Chamber manager since 1964, plans to meet each merchant and visit members. His last C of C Board meeting is June 7 at noon at Cliff House. Open to the public.

The Stamford municipal swimming pool is open under new high school coach Alvis Jackson. It will operate each afternoon with morning swimming lessons offered twice weekly.

Lineman Hurt In Fall From Pole Near Rule

Stamford Electric Cooperative lineman Jack Peters fell about 25 feet from a pole near Rule on Friday afternoon. He suffered two broken heels and was treated at Stamford Memorial Hospital then transferred to Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene where his helper James Griffin assisted him.

Hub Caps Thefts Cause Embarrassment At City Police Station

Dale Compton Hurt in Wreck Near Rule

Two Stamford teens were in a car wreck Tuesday night near Rule. Driver Mike Wright, 17, escaped with bruises while passenger Raymond Dale Compton, 18, suffered a concussion and was admitted to Stamford Memorial Hospital in serious condition. He later moved to Hendricks Memorial ICU and remained unconscious but gradually improving as the car left the highway and rolled over.
