Company M Caps Fort Hood Encampment Trophy Win
Stamford's Nation Guard unit Company M of the 142nd Infantry won the Ray Key trophy at Fort Hood for best battalion unit during the two week encampment. The Third Battalion under Col. Ralph M. Krieger includes Company M. Four companies contended for the John Sprague award for top unit in the regiment with last year’s Sprague going to Abilene HQ Company 3rd Battalion. Lt. J. J. Gregory Lt. R. P. Barnard and Lt. Herschel Ketels earned Expert Infantry Badges after January through the final camp test. 30 were awarded overall.

Louis Blackstock of Stamford won four Gold Star Honors of Exhibition at the Texas Photographers Association event held at the Stephen F. Austin Hotel in Austin during the association's 25th annual convention. He also was named state director for a second consecutive year, as he attended with Mr. and Mrs. Blackstock. School Board Awards Contracts For Improvements
The board let contracts to Davis Jones of Stamford for high school cafeteria and Bomar Heights school updates with base bids totaling 21 824. West Texas Coffee and Equipment Co of Abilene received a 6 843 18 contract for cafeteria equipment. A new 3 000 seat west stadium grandstand by Southern Bleacher Construction Co of Graham bid just over 20 500. Plans for a new cafetorium at Oliver Street School were approved with August bids and a September 1 start hoped. Mrs Wade Watts of Stamford underwent major surgery at Stamford Sanitarium.

Five Stamford FFA Boys Earn Lone Star Farmers Honors
Five Stamford High School FFA members Jerry Schuchert Wallace Bosse Tommy Schoonmaker Bobby Rogers and Carl Gene Reed traveled to Houston for the State Future Farmers of America convention. Reed stayed in California while the others attended with Brad Rowland the new instructor. They joined Weldon Holbrooks head of Stamford’s department for a banquet and toured San Jacinto and the battleship Texas. Stamford’s chapter earned more Lone Star Farmer honors than any nearby chapter amid about 4000 Texas FFA members. Captain and Mrs J B Colasino and children Susie and Butch visited Gloria Rasco and son Lane. Colasino’s wife is June Alexander, the Colasinos have been in Germany and he is stationed at Ft Sill.

United Church Women Plan August Work Project
United Church Women launch a work project in August starting Tuesday at 9 30 a m in the Central Presbyterian Church basement. Under Mrs David Ballard and chairwoman Mrs Marshall Rhew the group will pray and sew hospital gowns for overseas shipment using donated used shirts. Shirts can be dropped at Bunkley Drug Paynes Grocery or at church entrances. Those unable to sew may cut or sort plus bring scissors and portable sewing machines. The project runs for the first three weeks of August with weekly morning meetings.

Betty Curiel of Stamford Texas was crowned queen of Hart Michigan’s Mexican Festival Fiesta held July 16. The 15 year old, a Stamford High junior active in Future Homemakers of America, sang and danced, earning queen honors from seven contestants as thousands cheered.

Mrs Lily Skiles Rites Held At New Hope
Funeral services for Mrs. Lily Mae Skiles 72 widow of J E Skiles were held Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church Stamford. She died Monday at Stamford Sanitarium after prior hospital care and home convalescence. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery with Kinney Funeral Home in charge. She was born October 2 1882 in Denton County and married J E Skiles in 1900. Survived by her mother 93 of Stamford five sons and daughters 41 grandchildren 39 great grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.

Agnes Ericson of Austin visiting secretary of the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners was in Stamford Monday at the Stamford Sanitarium. In the last June 13 examination eight candidates from Stamford ranked sixth in the state among 39 schools. Applications are now being taken for a new class opening in September, said Miss Catherine Lavelle, superintendent.

A Q Stanford aged 85, retired farmer, died Saturday at 1 20 p m in Stamford Sanitarium after eight days there. Born in Waco on March 29 1870 he married Ava Alexander in 1895. He moved to this area in 1918 from Hico. Funeral Monday at St John s Methodist Church burial in Highland Cemetery. Survived by three sons Chester Glenn Marvin two daughters and numerous grandchildren.

Avoca Lueders Children Given Shots Tuesday
The second polio shots were given at the Lueders School on Tuesday afternoon July 19. Students of the first and second grades at Lueders and Avoca schools received the vaccination. Cowgers Return From West Coast Reunion Tour
Mr and Mrs E L Cowger and children Judy and Ernie returned from Los Angeles where they attended a family reunion with five states represented. They met Mrs Cowger's sister Mrs Ben Fisher and her family in Albuquerque New Mexico and traveled together via Grand Canyon Boulder Dam and Las Vegas. A Catalina Island visit occurred during the Los Angeles stay before returning by El Paso and Fabens where friends were visited.
