One County Sheriff Contest among Stamford Polls

Stamford voters face a single county office contest in the Democratic primary with Dave Reyes of Lueders seeking sheriff against incumbent W. Bill Dunwody. Other offices show unopposed or minor races as polls open 3 AM at Stamford Inn and 7 PM at the city auditorium.

Openings in Stamford Texas National Guard Unit

Commander says several openings exist for recruits and experienced men. Guardsmen subject to draft would stay with their company. 17 18 year olds may join and be deferred. veterans with 90 days service can join and be deferred. The Stamford unit is the 142nd Regiment, 36th Division, meeting weekly at the Stamford Airfield, with pay for drill and training in the community.

Jones County Exceeds Savings Bond Quota by Large Margin

Jones County oversubscribed its Series E Savings bonds quota by 150.22 percent, far exceeding the $84,500 goal with totals reaching $116,429.75. The drive placed Jones County 13th in the state for percent of quota reached, per 4 ¢ Humphrey county chairman.

Son-in-Law of Local Woman Dies in San Antonio

Ben Cash Jr., son-in-law of Mrs. J. D. Curd of this city, died unexpectedly in San Antonio Tuesday night. His wife, formerly Dorothy Curd, and their Kemah near Houston home, have two children aged 10 and 3. Mrs. Curd traveled from Dallas to Houston to join the family.

Funeral to Be Held Friday for Theodore Segerstrom

Willoughs Move to Abilene as DA Post Approved

Stamford Council Moves to Acquire Land for Paint Creek Lake

The Stamford City Council in special session after noon approved securing land for the Paint Creek Reservoir site. The State Board of Water Engineers granted a permit to impound 60 000 acre feet, with Stamford allowed 10 000 acre feet annually. Cities may join by paying storage costs. council plans negotiations with landowners and calls a public meeting in Haskell to authorize legal steps to protect municipal water rights.

Jones County Polio Fund Receives $13065 Boost

The Jones county polio fund was supplemented this week by an advance of 13065 from the National Foundation. Wilmer Sims of Abilene told Stamford chairman Tuesday. The money will pay outstanding debts and run for 60 days unless a special emergency arises. Twelve polio patients from Jones county are in hospitals and 26 suspects have been sent to Hendrick Memorial for examination. The March of Dimes campaign raised funds but was not enough to cover county needs.

Bank Deposits Here Show Increase

The First National Bank in Stamford reported on deposit totals of 6,296,774 at mid year June 39, up from 5,216,755 a year earlier. Loans stood at 816,024 this year versus 93,973 last year.

Jones County Traps 246 Coyotes and 11 Bobcats This Year

L W Whitley of Lueder, hired by the Jones County Predatory Animal Control club, has captured 246 coyotes and 11 bobcats since October. The Texas Predatory Animal Control Association funds about 95 dollars for Whitley’s travel, while the local club pays 155 dollars monthly. The report lists monthly totals from October to June and notes contact details for Whitley in Lueder.

Rain totals rise as showers move through on Wednesday

Hard showers began around 7 AM Thursday with 71 inches of rain reported. Showers Wednesday afternoon added 4 inches, bringing the weekly total to 2.17 inches. The 140 inches rain fell Sunday night, with neighboring areas seeing larger amounts, welcomed by farmers as relief from heat.

The city council adopted a zoning ordinance that will take effect August 1. It divides the city into business, residential and industrial zones and sets building types, lot occupancy, setback distances, and allowed uses. Provisions cover resale of existing structures within zones.

Murder Charge Facing Jones County Youth

A Jones County farm worker, Elidio Ramirez, is charged with first degree murder in the death of Rosalio Morelezg on a farm near the Union Community by Anson. Sheriff Bill Dunwoody said Morelez died from multiple stab wounds. four or five could have been fatal. Ramirez remained jailed in Anson on a bond set for release on the first degree order.

Final plans for Anson City hospital to be submitted this week

Final preliminary plans for Anson City hospital will be handed to the State Board of Health Hospital Construction Division this week. Mayor Earl McCaleb notes bidding advertising will follow after surveys for water, screen, sewer, gas mains and electricity are completed and utilities ready on site.
