Stamford pre school helps non English speakers learn
For the tenth year Stamford runs a three week two month English learning program for non English speaking children. Mary Loughmiller directs with Lupe Moreno and Vera Gomez assisting from Stamford High School. The daily sessions include recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance language drills vocabulary of about 600 words and phone tele trainer activities with library story hours and field trips to the fire department Highs Flowers and Modern Shoe Shop. Transportation is provided under a state program. The cohort is enthusiastic and eager to learn with outcomes seen as beneficial for the future.

District Conservation Work In 67 Passes $100,000 Mark
The Great Plains Conservation Program pumped over eighty thousand dollars into the Stamford area economy in the year ending June 30 1967 with total program costs rising well above 120 000 including producers' share. About 75 percent financed water saving terrace systems while brush control range seeding waterways and other practices made up the rest. Twenty two new contracts were developed in the Stamford work unit signaling growing land care adoption.

Rites Held Here for Mrs. Shanafelt
Service for Mrs. Cecil Shanafelt was held Wednesday at Orient Street Church of Christ with the Rev. Dale Foster and Rev. Jerry Boles assisting. Burial followed at Highland Cemetery. she died Monday in Stamford Memorial Hospital after a six day illness. She was born Mattie Reed January 12, 1896 in New Boston and married Cecil Shanafelt April 21, 1918 in Stamford. She was a member of Orient Street Church of Christ. Survivors include her husband, a sister Mrs. G W Moore, and four brothers A N Reed Jr James Reed H D and A R Reed. Pallbearers were Bob Prichard Bill Williams R C Cobb Paul Griggs Joe Benton Robert Summers.

Tour of Farms Slated Thursday
A Jones County farm tour on Thursday starts at 4 p.m. at the county courthouse. Farmers will inspect five farms focusing on cotton and milo demonstrations, crop growth, fertilizer use, and pre emergence weed control plots. W. T. Stovall and W. G. Swenson of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce were notified by District Vice-President J. J. Crim Jr. of a July 20 district meeting for all District V directors at 10 a.m.

Six Day a Week Parcel Post Returns to Stamford
Postmaster L. E. Million announced parcel post deliveries in Stamford are now six days a week, restored by an $8.5 million appropriation after 1964 cuts.
