Guard Unit To Leave Sunday For Annual Two-week Camp
The Stamford National Guard Battery C 1st Battalion 131st Artillery will depart at 3 45 a m Sunday for two weeks of training at North Fort Hood. Joining 1st Battalion 142nd Infantry and about 200 reservists, the unit will conduct field exercises firing howitzers and sleep in pup tents. Reorganization rumors suggest this may be their last two weeks under current designations.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Central Presbyterian Church for Mrs. C. E. Bunkley Sr., 78, who died Saturday at Stamford Memorial Hospital after a six month illness. Burial was at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include two sons C. E. Jr. of Stamford and Dr. Jack Bunkley of Kansas City, seven grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, and other relatives.

Miss Evalina Lay longtime Stamford hotel operator and former Jones County tax assessor died Saturday afternoon from an apparent heart attack. Born December 11 1890 in Red River County she taught in Anson and opened Hotel Miss Lay in 1922 becoming a railroad crew stopping place. Burial followed at Highland Cemetery. Survivors include two half sisters and nieces, among others. Pallbearers named.

Stamford native Sgt Hambright wounded in Vietnam
Sgt. Hambright, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. S. Hambright of Stamford, was wounded July 10 during a combat operation in Vietnam by a hostile booby trap fragment. He suffered a right cheek wound and is in an evacuation hospital. A 20-year veteran, he left June 10 for Vietnam. His wife and two children live in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.

Halford Yakey Dies. Rites Held In Central Presbyterian Church
Halford G. Yakey 82 of Old Glory died Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Dallas after a two month illness. Funeral services were held Friday at 4 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jerry Boles officiating. Burial followed in Highland Memorial Cemetery. He was born June 23, 1885 in Taylor and married Elizabeth Pumphrey in 1910. He and Herman Grimm drilled a discovery gas well in Nueces County and served as Cotton Ginners Association president in the 1930s. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, two grandchildren, one great grandchild, three sisters, and several relatives. Pallbearers included local residents Glenn and Carlton Pierce, Ed and Tony Letz, Isaac Castro, and Saul Bernell.]

Consolidation of Lueders Avoca Schools Approved
Voters in Avoca and Lueders approved the merger of their districts in a special election. Avoca 61 to 15 against, Lueders 134 for 8 against. The new district to be named Lueders Avoca Consolidated Independent School District will operate a high school in Avoca and lower grades in Lueders with shared administration and teaching staff.

ICC Examiner Recommends Abandonment of Katy Line
The Interstate Commerce Commission examiner approves abandoning the Texas Central line by the Katy from Stamford to Bellmead with only the Gorman to Dublin segment kept in service. The weighty loss and estimated 4 million cost to fix the line justify abandonment, while freight demand remains insufficient. Freight will continue on Stamford to Rotan using Wichita Valley tracks into Wichita Falls. the Gorman to Dublin portion will be sold to local citizens with M. E. Shell as president.
