The Stamford District Methodist Intermediates hold their second annual camp at Lueders Baptist Encampment, running Monday to Friday noon. Rev. E. B. Bowen acts as business manager with Mrs. Bowen as mother. Rev. Kendall serves as dean. Themes focus on serving the Lord with gladness and lessons include Instruct Our African Neighbors and What it Means to be a Church Member.

Jayton Woman Hurt in Wreck Suffers Stroke

Mr and Mrs A J Harrison of Jayton were injured in an automobile crash near Aspermont last week. Mrs Harrison, who had been treated for a heart ailment in Wichita Falls Clinic Hospital, was moved to Jayton where she then suffered a stroke and remains serious. The Kinney ambulance carried Mr Harrison to the Dallas home of a son for convalescence. Other injured, Mr and Mrs Lesus Hutto and daughter Marian of Rotan, have returned home.

Beloved Old Glory Resident Bert Greer Dies at 53

Bert Greer 53 of Old Glory died at Stamford Sanitarium after a heart ailment. Funeral held Thursday at 2:30 PM at Sweet Home Church near Old Glory, with Barrow Funeral Home in charge. Survived by wife, son Lewis Greer of Aspermont, four sisters and five brothers, including J T Greer and Ben Greer.

Farm Hand Bitten By Black Spider Near Stam Ford

Aubrey Rogers a farm hand on the Kar Wolf farm near Stam ford was bitten on the foot by a spider Tuesday morning while hauling feed. The spider crawled into his shoe and he was taken to the Stam ig Sanitarium for treatment. The spider was described as black but its species unknown. He suffered intensely from the bite. Mr and Mrs Hollis Atkerson left Saturday for Fort Smith Arkansas on a vacation trip.

Swenson Family Attends Swedish Centennial Events

A. J. Swenson and sons returned from Austin after attending the 100th anniversary celebration of the first Swedish immigrant in Texas, S. M. Swenson. Bishop Rodde of Lund and his wife joined the delegation, with Governor Allred welcoming them on radio. The group visited San Antonio cathedrals and missions before the bishop's departure for Lindsborg en route to Sweden.

Miss Ilse Wolf Named Columbia University Assistant

Miss Ilse Wolf daughter of Mr and Mrs Karl Wolf will teach as an assistant in the Household Arts and Sciences department at Columbia University New York City starting September She has been a supervisory Home Economics teacher at the Junior High School in Lubbock for several years Her sister Miss Mina Wolf also returns to Columbia after assisting last year while pursuing her doctorate In the first six weeks of summer Mina teaches Foods and Nutrition at Texas Tech Tubboeck where she earned her Master’s degree in June 1937.

How It Started Texas Cowboy Reunion Beginnings

Stamford Chamber of Commerce leaders in 1929 30 launched the idea of a county fair style event focused on working cattlemen and cowboys. They named the gathering Stamford Cowboy Reunion aiming to grow into a major Texas show with broad business support led by Swenson interests and local merchants.

Jones County Candidates Vote Against Public Speakings

Jones county candidates meet in the district court room at Anson Monday night and decide not to hold the usual pre election speaking dates this year. Practically all candidates attend and vote to follow the meeting’s decision. The group then votes against holding community speakings by a majority.

J V Roach Family Hurt In Pecos Car Crash

J V Roach his wife and his mother in law Mrs O V Roach of Denton were injured when their car overturned near Pecos on a Sunday afternoon. A tire blowout is suspected as the cause. Mrs O V Roach suffered a broken arm others were cut and bruised. They were taken to Pecos hospital and later returned to Denton.

Mrs Sims Presides At County W M U Session

Mrs Clyde Sims of Stamford presided at the Jones County Baptist W M U meeting held at the Lueders Encampment grounds. County president Mrs G G Flournoy attended in Colorado. Dewees of Anson gave the morning address. Chandler of Abilene spoke in the afternoon. Lunch featured and Leuders women provided music. Stamford attendees included Mrs Sims and others.

Baptist Girls Camp Near Lueders Closes After Week

The Baptist girls camp of the lith district and neighboring districts closed last Friday at noon. Enrolled youth totaled 260 plus sponsors and teachers. Mrs. Dick OBrien, director, announced the camp pastors were Rev. B N Shepherd and Rev. Dick OBrien during the session.

The McCraw Good Will Special a bright red campaign sound car promoting Attorney General William McCraw stopped in Stamford for Fourth of July events. Dick Stout former aide turned campaigner led a 10 000 mile Texas tour after a June 18 Gonzales send off and 4000 miles in two weeks reaching Stamford July 3 with Tayman Geer UT senior and wrestling champ handling equipment.

Speakers Announced for Sixteenth Baptist Encampment

Rev. C A Powell of Abilene will preach the morning sermons and Rev. J W Marshall of Dallas the evening sermons for the first week of the sixteenth annual Baptist Encampment opening at Leeders Monday and running through July 29. Morning services run 11 45 to 12 16 and evening 8 45 to 9 15 with a full program of training union classes and music led by Abilene and Lubbock leaders.

Stamford Girls Named Duchesses for Anson Folk Festival

Miss Mary Louise Doss and Miss Or byrne Doran were chosen by the Pierian Club as Stamford duchesses for the Folk Festival at Anson. They will be crowned on the north steps of the Anson courthouse Friday at 7 30 PM, with a royal party dinner and events surrounding the queen crowning.

Multiple wells in the Ivy pool near Stamford and Avoca are active with tests and drilling. O'Daniel to Speak to Jones County Voters in Stamford

W Lee O Daniel Texas governor candidate brings campaign to Jones County Stamford for an 8 p m rally Monday July 18 with a state network broadcast at 10 30 p m. Supporters expect a large turnout and invites go to surrounding communities. He has spoken to over 450000 people since starting in Waco and backs a business oriented state government and old age pension. The tour includes five more stops Tuesday at Haskell Seymour Olney Graham and Nacogdoches with broadcasts continuing. He is accompanied by the Hillhilly Band and his children Pat Mike and Molly.

Anson Folk Festival Stakes A Large Varied Program

The third annual Anson Folk Festival will feature an expanded lineup with an old time cowboy pageant at Chittenden ranch and a Dixie Ladies tableau. July 14 fireworks, July 15 parade with bands from Stamford and area towns, Kiowa Indian dances, and a Fiesta at the new athletic stadium lead a Pioneer Day weekend with street dances and a free lunch.

J N Rush Dies At Son S Home In Jones County

J N Rush, who came to Jones County in 1906, died at his son O W Rush’s home in Nienda July 7. He formerly lived in Stamford. Funeral held at Hamlin Methodist Church with Rev J B Hateman and Rev Hanks. Interment in local cemetery. Survived by children O W Rush, J A Rush, W F Rush, Carrie Harvick, Etta Peters, and Mew jhalele Nannelee. twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a half brother.
