A. C. Humphrey and son Wayne Humphrey of Stamford have purchased controlling interest in Farmers State Bank at Lueders and both serve as directors. There are no plans for changes.
James Frizell nears completion of a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Geology at Texas Tech. He will join Phillips Petroleum in Midland after August 1 as a junior geologist while his wife Janet and daughter stay in Stamford with his in laws.
United Church Women of Stamford begin a series of prayer sessions every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Central Presbyterian Church, continuing through July. Mrs. Bob Craig leads mornings from "Like a Watered Garden" with prayers by various members, and donations of clean clothing for local needs are requested.
Tad McGhee Motor Co has taken over the Gulf Service Station on the southeast corner of the Square formerly operated by Oscar Hargus. Hargus has moved to the North Swenson Gulf station. O R Johnson will be manager. complete service will be offered.
Stamford vocational agriculture classes will add six local youths to the Lone Star Farmer degree at the state convention in Dallas July 25 to 27 with an awards banquet on July 26. Recipients are Charles Stenholm T C Rice Wilbur Cox Jan Olson Don Haynes and Darryl Schoonmaker. instructors Weldon Holbrooks and Brad Rowland accompany them. Previous recipients include Don Walker 1953 John T Treadwell Benny Parnell Bobby Jones 1954 and Jerry Schubert Bobby Rogers Wallace Bosse Carl Reed Tommy Schoonmaker 1955. The Stamford chapter also lists four honorary Lone Star farmers Sam Baize Cecil Eager Jack Mills Weldon Holbrooks.
Mrs Ona High, a Stamford florist for many years, is a candidate for director of the Texas State Florist Association. The meeting is in Austin this week. She was nominated earlier and will be accompanied by her son Warren High, a florist in Abilene, and his wife.
Ben Bagwell, longtime Stamford merchant since 1941, died Wednesday morning at 6 35 at the Stamford Sanitarium after a heart attack at his home. He would have been 52 on July 17. Funeral set for 5 30 p m Thursday at St John s Methodist Church with burial in Willow Cemetery at Haskell. He moved his men s store to Stamford in 1941 and is survived by his wife Nona Kirkpatrick and three sisters and a brother, plus several relatives joining for the service.
Jerome Savage, pastor of the Church of Christ in Rochester, will lead a gospel meeting at Old Glory Church of Christ starting July 15. Services run 8 to 9 p m Sunday through Friday. Savage, son of KE and Mrs Savage of Stamford, previously preached at Old Glory in 1954 55 while studying at Abilene Christian College.
Eric Swenson of Spur announced the calf roping contest at the Reunion grounds on July 4. Rex Felker, chamber manager of Haskell, performed as trick roper. time-keepers were Gordon Wood and Jerry Boles with Dick Coody. Notables include J. K. Higgins of Merkel born July 31, 1872 and 80 year old Walter Johnson attending 24 reunions.
Stamford High School cafeteria supervisor Mrs. John Massey attends the state lunchroom workshop at Texas Tech in Lubbock this week. She is joined by worker Mrs. Leo Ivy. They left Stamford Monday and will return at week’s end.
Mrs. Nettie Kelley left Dallas by plane Monday morning to spend a few months with her daughter Mrs. L A Simmons in Miami Florida. Her son L O Kelley drove her to Dallas Sunday afternoon before her departure.
About 50 000 acres in Jones and 85 000 acres in Haskell counties are in Soil Bank agreements. Some 800 Jones and 545 Haskell cotton and wheat deals have been signed. Officials in Anson and Haskell reported busy offices as signup nears the July 20 limit.
Haskell and Jones county farmers are urged to visit ASC offices before July 20 to qualify for soil bank benefits. Wheat land may be idle with payments up to 6 dollars per acre, and cotton payments reach 15 cents per pound with different groupings by county yields. In Haskell, average cotton yields ~168 pounds per acre, with community groupings creating potential payments based on yields from 75 to 250 pounds per acre.
Stamford merchants consider two business boosting ideas this week with a third meeting at the Chamber of Commerce. An Appreciation Day plan with cash prizes and ticket draws is being revived, and a Treasure Hunt plan would match ticket numbers to store window numbers. A committee led by Roy Duke will refine details and seek post office approval.
New officers of the American Legion post and Auxiliary will be installed Monday night July 16 at the Legion Hall. A water melon feed will follow. Mrs. R McNabb becomes Legion Auxiliary president, with Mrs. Monroe Dodgen as vice president and Mrs. W L Plant secretary. Roscoe Hood becomes treasurer and E H Baird chaplain. Stanley Hall is Legion post commander. E O Morgan is immediate past commander.
The Northern district of Chis holm Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America, invites all unit leaders committee members den mothers and interested scouters to a monthly roundtable Thursday night July 12 at 7 pm in the basement of Central Presbyterian Church Stamford. Planning for next month events will be discussed.
The Stamford Coffee Shop has installed a Solarmatic Broiler promising steak completion in three minutes. Clif Grantham touts controlled radiant broiling with dual-sided cooking and even heat, saying it tenderizes cheaper cuts.
First Lt Hubert Young was discharged after two years of service at the Great Falls separation center Montana. He trained at Tyndall AFB Florida and served overseas in the Mediterranean region before returning to North Dakota. He toured Europe on leave and visited Canada Glacier Park Yellowstone Salt Lake City Denver Estes Park and Colorado Springs on his way home.
Avoca school board of tax equalization will meet on August 1 at 9:00 a.m. at the school. Supt G E Hastings announced the session details.
Horace Carter of Dalhart won the saddle in the special GI calt roping event at the Texas Cowboy Reunion, continuing a family saddle tradition after his father Henry Carter won the wild cow milking saddle in 1935. Horace, 25, worked with Henry Carter and R E Harding in Dalhart and Thurber. He first roped at seven in the rodeo arena and rode all night, getting three to four dollars from the hat. He reached finals for three saddles on Wednesday night and won the first final he competed in.
Cub Scout day camp will run July 31 to August 2 at Hamlin City Park in Hamlin for ages 9 and 10. Sessions run 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily with swimming, crafts, model building, rope making, plaster casting, braiding, songs and games. Scouts bring sack lunches, swimwear, simple tools, and 25 cents daily for swim periods.
H S Post an early-day rancher of Haskell County died Monday at 10 a m in Abilene. He was father of Bailey Post who moved from Stamford to Ozona and brother of Mrs W Cannon of this city. His wife died in August 1953. Funeral was held Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Haskell with burial in Willow cemetery there.
Vernon E. Robertson age 7 and former resident of Jones Counts died at his home near Waco on July 1. Burial was at China Springs on July 3. He is survived by his wife daughter Mrs Catherine Aaron and a son Billy of the home and two grandsons Jack and Joe Aaron. Mrs C S Ratliff of Stamford is a niece.
Mary E. Loughmiller principal of Bomar Heights school returned to the Veterans Administration hospital at Big Spring after eight days at home. She had entered the VA Hospital on May 0 and was released eight days later. Max and Clifford Loughmiller remained in Stamford Sanitarium but were discharged Tuesday.
Larry McNeil Don Haynes and Ralph Hanson attend McMurry Assembly at McMurry College Abilene this week. Assembly opened Monday and runs through Saturday morning. Rev Marshall Rhew district superintendent speaks and Rev W A Appling teaches a course. Judy Hughes and Nancy Kennedy attended the Methodist Intermediate camp at Butman Camp Merkel last week.
