Record crowds fill Western Art Show at Texas Cowboy Reunion

The eighth annual Western Art Show and Sale drew about 2,000 visitors to the John Selmon Memorial Art Gallery on June 30. G C Carothers estimates sales near 68 000 by noon with potential to exceed 75 000 by nightfall while noting a top piece sold for 4 500 to Harriet Swenson of Stamford. He cites last year s record 100 000 but says this year runs true to form with strong turnout and anticipated gifts to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center.

Bethel Lutheran float tops parade in Stamford

Bethel Lutheran Church wins institutional float at the Texas Cowboy Reunion parade in Stamford with a 75th anniversary theme. West Texas Rehabilitation Center places second, Bricksdahl 4 H Club third. commercial wins include Piggly Wiggly, Stamford Day Care Center, and a 1918 Coors wagon. Notable attendees include Lt. Gov Bill Hobby and Rep Charles Stenholm.

Head-on collision kills Lueders woman

A head-on crash two miles north of Nugent on Farm Road 600 at 6 15 am Wednesday killed Pamela Jean Ivy 19 of Lueders and Victor Benjamin Edinger 64 of Grand Forks ND. Edinger and Ivy were pronounced dead at the scene. others injured included Larry Don Ivy Terry Loren Edinger and Viola Jean Edinger all hospitalized. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Welcome rain helps cotton

A 30 minute rain late Friday afternoon dumped .70 of an inch of rain on Stamford. Thunderstorms added .19 of an inch on Saturday afternoon and evening. The two day rain brought the month’s total to .89 inches while normal July is 1.91 inches. KDWT measured 2.58 inches in June, boosting the year’s total to 12.87 inches.

Rodeo revival at Texas Cowboy Reunion thrills crowds

The Texas Cowboy Reunion four night event revived old West Texas spirit with calf roping led by Gene Baker of Wylie High School clocking 31.6 seconds to win saddle and $1,029.60. Brad McReynolds of Wortham posted 9.1 in final run, earning $1,029.60. Double mugging paid $6,565 among 101 cowboys. Rowdy Rasberry of Roby won bull riding at 77, earning $1,080. Wild mare races crowned Randy Todd, Chris Lawrence, Ken Helvey, and Howard Dicky each $150.

Fire damages home in Lake Stamford incident

An early evening blaze at the Lake Stamford home of Mr. and Mrs. Novell Wright damaged three rooms. Fire units arrived at 8:35 p.m. and used garden hoses to control a kitchen fire believed to start when grease in the vent ignited after Mrs. Wright left the stove unattended. Attic, kitchen, living room, hallway, and a closet sustained damage with water from hoses. no injuries reported.
