1981 Texas Cowboy Reunion Opens in Stamford

The 51st Texas Cowboy Reunion began with a Wednesday Western parade through Stamford and a rodeo show featuring the Hager Twins from Hee Haw. The AQHA Show and youth activities continue Thursday and Friday with halter, reining, barrel racing, pole bending, western pleasure, cutting, and youth division events.

Regional Open Youth Show crowns Sullivant and Nance champions

Gainesville artist Larry B. Sullivant wins Open Youth Show and high point horse. James H. Nance of El Reno takes AQHA and Registered Youth titles. Event chaired by U.S. Rep. Charles Stenholm features a Thursday lineup with memorials, meetings, dances, and a rodeo week culminating Saturday with capital city music and multiple dances. Meals are served Friday and Saturday at noon and six.

Banks and city offices close for Fourth of July

The Stamford American will be closed Friday for Independence Day observances. First National Bank and Big Country Savings also close Friday with First National staying open until 6 p.m. Thursday. All three reopen Monday. Regular mail runs Friday but no Saturday delivery. Anson City Hall and the Jones County Courthouse close Friday.

Fireworks ban in Stamford during Fourth of July

Stamford police chief warns residents against fireworks within city limits. Ordinance 483 prohibits storing or discharging fireworks and bans possession, sale, or ignition within Stamford or within 100 feet of any house. Violators face misdemeanor charges and fines up to 200 dollars per violation. Texas Safety Association data show 1,378 fireworks injuries in 1980, with children unsupervised, improper combinations, and indoor use among common causes.

Cancer drive declared great success in Stamford area

The American Cancer Drive in Stamford and nearby communities raised 3537.31 dollars. Stamford donations totaled 897.07 from businesses 213 in memorials and 1857.99 from the door to door campaign. Ericksdahl 485 Avoca 63.25 and Tuxedo 21 also contributed. Mrs. Duncan president of the local Woman's Forum notes the results.

City Council hears ambulance service subsidy request

Stamford City Council held a special session to discuss raising the monthly ambulance subsidy for Stanford Funeral Home from 600 to 750 while Stamford Memorial Hospital contributes 400 toward a total 1,000. Marvin and Gene Stanford urged a joint meeting with the hospital board to plan long term and noted rising costs and state regulations may force changes within five years. The council favored the increase but took no action pending further talks.

Roberson Resigns as Stamford City Manager

Stamford City Manager Ken Roberson announced his resignation effective Aug 1 at the City Council meeting. He has served since June 11, 1979, citing the need to move ahead after two years of council cooperation and city progress. He came to Stamford from Austin where he spent 50 years in city work and private business. He is UT Austin civil engineering 1973 graduate and plans no immediate employment.
