Cpl. Horace W. Weeks, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Weeks of Avoca, was killed in action on Mindanao Island June 5. He had 3 years in service and 18 months overseas. Born in Hood county in 1907, he moved to Jones county in childhood. He is survived by his son in Corpus Christi, his parents in Avoca, and several brothers and sisters, including Cpl. Lois B. Weeks in the Pacific and Cpl. B. F. Weeks Jr. at Camp Blanding, Florida.

McGee Brothers Return on furlough from war in Pacific
Pfc. Thomas McGee wounded in Luzon on April 20 arrives home June 30 for a 30 day furlough to visit family before reporting back to Palm Springs hospital. His brother Sgt Roy McGee plans to return soon on rotation furlough. The brothers left the United States for Hawaii three years ago in June and have served in the Pacific theater.

Cpl Lamar Sorgee of the S6th Black Hawk Division is on a 90 day furlough after returning from four months in France Belgium Germany and Austria. He earned one battle star for actions in the Ruhr pocket and will proceed to Camp Gruber Oklahoma before heading to the Pacific. He is the son of Mrs Ava Lee Sorgee and has a sister Miss Wanda Sorgee. Caddo Lake on the Texas Louisiana border is noted nearby.

The Farm Security Administration launches its fifth year to provide water facilities loans in 17 western and southwestern states including Jones county Texas. Loans cover wells cisterns ponds stock tanks storage tanks power equipment and garden irrigation up to one acre with up to 20 year terms at 3 percent interest. The program aims for safe drinking water for families livestock and crops and can begin with loans as small as 200.

Grand Champion Stallion and Mare Crowned at 1945 AQHA Show
Star Deck won grand champion stallion at the 1945 American Quarter Horse Association show in Tulsa, owned by A. I. Hunt of Tulsa. Punkin, a 7-year-old mare owned by Mrs. Helen Michaelis of Eagle Pass, was named grand champion mare and also won mares foaled before 1942. 3 Day Total Large as Usual Despite Rain at Texas Cowboy Reunion
Rain shortened Tuesday night and Wednesday morning shows but crowds remained high for the Texas Cowboy Reunion. Attendance on Wednesday afternoon pushed the three day total to near record levels with about 25 percent more first day spectators than 1941 and 1942. Contests continued through Wednesday afternoon despite wet arena conditions and some events being canceled.

Charles H Featherston of Wichita Falls was re elected president of the Texas Cowboy Reunion Association at the annual officers election held Wednesday morning at the Bunkhouse on the Reunion grounds. Retires After 27 Years On Stamford Postal Route
John W. Rye, a city mail carrier in Stamford, retired after 27 years on the same 15 mile north side route. He walked an estimated 4,395 miles per year and started at the Stamford post office in 1917 after civil service exams in 1913. He and his wife live on a farm about two miles southwest of Stamford.

First Baptist Builds Cottage at Camp Grounds
A rock-veneer cottage is under construction for the First Baptist Church of Stamford at the Lueders Encampment. The 50 by 36 foot structure includes an 18 by 30 foot lounge, a large screened sleeping porch, dressing rooms, and baths. Donated lots from T A Upshaw, George Smith, and J K Brady fund the project, supervised by Rev J H Littleton with cement work by Lawrence Crider. Target completion ahead of July YWCA camps.
