Stamford City Council raised the 1957 tax rate to 875 cents per 100 dollars and added a 475 cent sinking fund levy, with all increase going to operations. The residential garbage collection fee rises to 1.00 and will be included in water bills from July 15, with collection citywide. outside-city water charges will be 1.5 times the city rate.
An ordinance approved by Stamford City Council sets new graduated speed limits for Highways 38 and 277. Starting at the Square, speeds rise from 30 to 60 mph by day along 38, with 55 mph by night. 277 begins at the north city limits at 35 mph, then 40, then 35, then 30, 45, and up to 50 mph toward the south city limits. Signs will be installed.
Funeral services for Thomas L Fuqua 25 who was killed in Canada in a helicopter crash about June 20 were held Saturday at 10 am at the First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Highland cemetery with the American Legion in charge. Pallbearers included Durwood Jones Otis Jones Gene Turnbow and others. He is survived by his wife and her family from Washington DC, his father and stepmother Mr and Mrs R A Fuqua of Hamilton and a sister Mrs Faris Gilliam of Shreveport Louisiana.
Frank William Wedeking, 9, native of Germany who arrived 1894, died Thursday at 5 am in Stam ford Sanitarium after frail health. Funeral Friday at St John s Methodist Church, burial in Highland cemetery. Survived by wife Catherine Pinnicker Wedeking and 4 daughters, 3 sons, 13 grandchildren and great grandchildren, with Kinney Funeral Home in charge.
About 400 people attended Avoca's homecoming at the school with 200 at the barbecue. Rev J E Shewbert and Rev Joel V Grimes led services, a memorial cross honored deceased teachers and students, and next year’s reunion was set for 1960. Officers were elected including R O Smith president and R T Taylor vice president.
Perry Pennell born Sagerton October 1 1896 grew up in Stamford and lived here most of his life. He died of cancer at the Stamford Sanitarium Saturday at 122 am after entering hospital Tuesday. Funeral was held Sunday at 3 pm at First Baptist Church with local pastors presiding. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery. Pennell 51 is survived by his wife Juanita Alexander a son Tommie a granddaughter Trudy a brother and two sisters.
New Officers of the Texas Cow boy Reunion Association were elected Tuesday morning at the Bunkhouse. Charlie Moorhouse of Munday and Benjamin elected as president. J. C. Davis of Rule named first vice president with Laster Hensley of Guthrie as second vice president. Secretary treasurer reelected J. W. Hudson of Haskell. New directors include S. Brown Abilene and CR Piliett Munday.
A memorial service is held Wednesday at the Bunkhouse at 2 pm to honor oldtime cowboys and cattlemen who died in the past year. A 26 name list is recorded with potential additions. readers may submit names, addresses, and dates of death to H. Culwell, president. The list includes Thomas C. Richardson, BR. W. Newman, and others from Dallas to Stamford.
An estimated 25,000 spectators lined the street for the Texas Cowboy Reunion parade. It featured six white horses, the Hardin Simmons Cowboy Hand, college bands, and float riders despite the heat. Awards went to Abilene Junior Cowboys and others, with prizes announced in the arena later.
Hlemer J Merriott named chairman of the Peanlen horse show events this year. He will oversee barrel races and sponsor roles, with his family active in the event and local education work noted. Merriott previously lived in Arizona and Alaska in various civil service roles and grew up in Oklahoma.
The Texas Cowboy Reunion 1957 wraps with awards and new champions on Independence Day. A large crowd is expected for parades, rodeos, saddle prizes, and day money as cowboys compete for saddles and spurs, with hundreds of contestants in calf roping, steer milking, and bareback events.
Thirteen cutting horses will compete in regular open cutting horse contests during rodeo performances. Finals set for Thursday night with the winner receiving a saddle and second place earning 75. Participants listed include J W Hastines, Wood Atchley, Mrs G F Rhodes, Mercy Spires, Bob Watson, Paul Jors, L F Shawver, RP Copeland, W F Martin Harlin, Pephert Copeland, Sir Faireloth, and Reb Pressley with varying elimination scores.
Schedule lists Wednesday events for the Texas Cowboy Reunion Association with go rounds in slack calf roping and wild cow milking, judging quarter horse stallions, chuck wagon meals, memorial service, grand entry, parade, and dancing across main arena and Roundup Hall. The times include 7:30 am, 11:45 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, 5:45 pm, 8 pm, and 19 pm with multiple venues noted.
The City of Stamford obtained a deed from the Scott estate for 99.9 acres adjoining the lake, bringing the park total to about 219 acres on the south side of Lake Stamford. The state park board had earlier designated the tract and urged further land purchase. The city paid $1 an acre plus consideration, gaining lake frontage. The Texas Legislature has appropriated about 20,000 for development over the next two years.
Linda Merriott of Stanford FFA won the cowgirl sponsor barrel race with a best 21.6 second time on Tuesday afternoon. Several riders needed re rides as horses balked and timing clock issues affected results. Mrs Mildred Farris set the pattern as the saddle winner last year.
Rev. Jack Southerland named new pastor of First Baptist Church will relocate with his family to Stamford around July 6. They will travel by proning van to Stamford and plan to stay after completing arrangements at the church.
Thirty eight sponsors register ed to tryout for day money tith barrel pee with forty numbers recorted. Stamford sponsor Judy Mets does not compete for day money or prizes, and no one carries No 14 attend. The list names sponsors from Stamford Abilene Rochester Holliday Benbrook and Fort Worth among others. Mrs C B Smith of Stamford underwent spinal surgery and is slowly improving.
