Thousands are expected for the opening parade of the 39th Texas Cowboy Reunion in Stamford. The rodeo runs July 3 to 5 with a matinee on July 5, hundreds of riders, 14 riding clubs, and a grand entry featuring 400 to 600 horses.
The parade forms on Oliver Street near the school at 4 PM and travels west on Oliver to Swenson then south to McHarg. It proceeds east on McHarg to Anson, then south to Hamilton, west to Swenson, north to McHarg, and finally west on McHarg before disbanding.
Avoca hosts a triannual homecoming for former students and staff on Saturday July 5 with registration at 1 p.m. at the school, a catered meal at 6 p.m. priced 1.75, ticket sales through Woodson Hutaker, and a brief business meeting followed by visiting and fellowship led by president Mrs Earline Whitworth.
Stamford Lions voted Tuesday night to make the initial $300 payment on a room at the new Stamford Memorial Hospital. The total price is about $1,000.
The Ameri can Quarter Horse Association approved show at the Texas Cowboy Reunion proceeds smoothly. Judges include Robert S Johnson of Santa Rosa NM and Frank Daws of Throckmorton. Youth events run July 3 with six divisions, July 4 halter and youth activity shows, and July 5 junior cutting with trophies for class winners. Premiums from AQHA halter and performance classes equal 70 percent of entry fees. youth activities offer no cash awards.
Ballots have been mailed to Stamford Chamber of Commerce members with a July 5 deadline at 5 p.m. Five directors will be chosen from a 13 candidate list. The top five vote-getters will win, including John B. Martin, Don Howard, John Harrell, Roy Arledge, and Mrs. George Pryor among others.
Stamford post office will operate from 8 to 10 a m Saturday per Postmaster L F Million Jr. The measure aims to grant staff more holidays.
Jerry Boles, known as a rodeo announcer at the Texas Cowboy Reunion, will reprise his duties this year after several seasons on the sidelines.
Ernest L. Cowger and Dan M. Lovvorn are reassigned to the Haskell Soil Conservation Service Work Unit effective today. Cowger will assist landowners in Haskell County with conservation plans while commuting from Stamford, and Lovvorn will base at Haskell from his Stamford area home. The Stamford office closes. the office sits at 102 North Ave E next to the Haskell Chamber of Commerce.
Stamford police receive Chevrolets furnished by Garrett Chevrolet Co. These cars feature automatic transmission and air conditioning. A flashing light will be added before they enter service. City Manager Jerry Sweett notes no new garbage truck chassis have been ready in San Antonio, delaying the packer body. delivery of that vehicle is expected soon.
The Baptist men's rally will be July 11 starting at 4 30 p m at the Leeders Baptist Encampment Grounds. Funeral for P. G. Franklin 59, electrician, was held Monday afternoon at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Don Harms officiating. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Franklin died Saturday after a ten day illness in Hendrick Memorial Hospital Abilene. Born March 2 1910 in Butler he married Johnnie Mae Jenkins in 1930 and moved Stamford from Galveston in 1945. Survivors include his wife two daughters two sons twelve grandchildren three great grandchildren his mother two brothers three sisters and other relatives.
The Stamford Lions Club will host and provide tickets to foreign exchange students from Seymour Caddo Rule and Whitharl will join the group as part of the Lions exchange program.
Diane Andrews and Bill Longley spoke to the Stamford Rotary Club Tuesday detailing Blue Bonnet Girls State and Boys State. They were sponsored jointly by the club and the local Legion and Legion Auxiliary with M. Isbell presiding in his first term as president.
Weekend guests included Mr and Mrs J F Cockburn Olney Mr and Mrs Clyde O Grady Dallas Mr and Mrs D T Scoggins Abilene and G Scoggins Tucson Ariz all staying with the Taylor household.
Mrs Lee Walker secretary in the Stamford Chamber of Commerce office for years was awarded a 15 year pin at the CofC Managers Association meeting in Brownwood last month. The award was mailed due to local office duties and she received it Wednesday morning.
Mrs. Jess Compton of Stamford aged 75 died Wednesday at Stamford Inn where she lived since 1965. Funeral services were held Friday at First Baptist Church with pastors from Lovington Seymour and St John’s Methodist officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. She was born Gertie Turmer January 27 1894 and married Jess Compton in 1913. The couple moved from Itasca to Jones County in 1918 and to Stamford in 1928. Survivors include two daughters, sisters, half siblings, two half brothers, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.
Herbert A. Day 74 of Stamford died of a heart attack and was pronounced dead at Stamford Memorial Hospital. Funeral Sunday at St John United Methodist Church with Rev Jarrell Sharp officiating. Burial Highland Cemetery under Kinney Funeral Home. Survivors include wife Bertha, son Raymond, daughter Mrs Jeff English, two grandsons, a brother and three sisters. Pallbearers named Weldon Walker and others.
Sam Crawford of Stamford greets members for a three day Texas Cowboy Reunion Association gathering. Dues are 2.50 for a badge three meals and dances. Activities include business session memorial service directors meeting nightly dances and an old fiddlers contest for 50 plus. A new historical marker will be dedicated July 4.
Mrs Ron Reed formerly Patti Miller earned a Registered Nurse diploma from St Johns Hospital School of Nursing Tulsa Oklahoma on June 29. She led the junior class and served as state association president this year. Reed also received a national certificate of merit for her presidential report. Mr and Mrs Warren Miller and Butch attended the graduation.
Bill Longley attends the Lions International convention in Tokyo Japan and travels with John Dobyns. The pair participate in the event showcasing Lions Club activities and交流.
A 3 p.m. July 4 dedication at the Oldtimers Bunk House marks the granite memorial listing former presidents of the Oldtimers Association. Amarillo’s T. L. Roach, president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, will speak. The marker recounts the 1930 Texas Cowboy Reunion and the open range to barbed wire transition with noted figures among early cowhands.
Mrs. Dave Walker was named chairman of a Stamford Garden Club committee to landscape and decorate the area around the new marker honoring the oldtime cowboy near the Bunk House. President T Dodson said roadside beautification is a Texas garden club priority and Stamford will beautify and maintain the area.
Ratien Brothers of Mansfield supplies stock again this year with new bucking horses. Carl Swenson, rodeo chairman, says Ratien has added horses to his string and many are described as pretty rank.
