Grand Parade Launches Reunion Horse Auction Today
The Grand Parade hosts a Thursday sale at the Texas Cowboy Reunion to raise funds for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Up to 40 Quarter Horses will be auctioned from 1 p.m. near the Quarter Horse stables with Morrison and Carlile as auctioneers. Proceeds benefit the Center. Some horses donated, others on consignment with a $75 consignment fee. Breeders from across the state contribute animals.

The 34th annual Texas Cowboy Reunion opens with a parade featuring at least 13 riding groups and the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboy Band. Stamford Area Golf Joins State Meet Bid
Two Stamford players and two Abilene players earned trips to the Texas Jaycee Golf Tournament by finishing first and second in their divisions at the Region 1 Jaycee Golf Tournament held at Stamford Country Club. Don Mitchell led by morning, shooting a 141 total to win the open division ahead of Chuck Brownfield at 144. Benny Vase of Sweetwater placed third in the open division. Jimmy Kay of Abilene won the novice class with 165, with Ron Hampton second at 164 and Bruce Scott third at 168. The top finishers will travel to Harlingen July 14 to 18. Stamford Jaycees will cover expenses. Twenty-three district winners competed. Junior Chamber of Commerce groups from Abilene, Sweetwater, Hamlin, Karen, Stamford, Haskell and Albany entered the event.

Mrs. Cox Rites Held at Central Christian Church
Funeral services for Mrs. Frankie Cox were held Saturday at Central Christian Church with Rev David Freeman officiating. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Cox, born February 7 1925 in Coleman, died Wednesday at her Lubbock home. She married Mr. Cox in August 1948 and lived in Stamford for years. Survivors include her husband five children two brothers and two sisters and her mother.

The Sweet William Singers from Stamford High School won first in a talent contest at Western Week festivities on the Post Office square with over 1,000 spectators. Beard contest crowned Johnny Chilaress as fanciest beard and J T Wisener, a 1963 graduate, won the peach fuzz prize. Spiedels were runners-up and Hicksville Kids earned third in a separate event.

The Texas Cowboy Reunion Association holds its annual meeting at the air conditioned Junk House over three days. Activities include a business session at 10 o clock and a memorial service on Friday afternoon, with Saturday featuring an old fiddlers contest and a talk by Dr. Rupert N Richardson on Old Times Oldtimers and What They Mean to the Southwest. Senator Ralph Yarborough plans to visit Saturday afternoon.

The Samford Ferrie Co operative received a $382000 loan from the Rural Electrification Administration for distribution and consumer lines. Sen Ralph Yarborough and Cong Omar Burleson announced the news, with C M Lester noting no major expansion is planned and that the co op continues replacing and adding lines for more customers. The group still has $100000 left from a four year old loan, renewed with the new allotment. Loans run 35 years, but Stamford’s repayment is about 20 years ahead of schedule.

Guilty Pleas in Anson DWI Case Shuffle
In the 104th District Court in Anson two defendants pleaded guilty to second offense DWI charges. A third plea of not guilty resulted in a hung jury and mistrial. Judge Owen Thomas presided. Elmer A. Walters of Anson was fined 100 dollars and 10 days jail for a May offense. John A. Luna of Abilene got 200 dollar fine and 30 days jail. Zula F. Corby of Hamlin pleaded not guilty and the jury failed to reach a verdict.

Number of Girls in Sponsor Contest Hits an All-Time High
Six dozen girls are entered in the Cowgirl Sponsor contest at the Texas Cowho v reunion. The event marks the largest participation to date with 70 entries. Contestants ride in the parade and are split into three groups for barreled repeats. the ten fastest times Saturday decide the prize saddle. Friday honors go to the sponsor breakfast. Hosts include Mrs Dobbins and Sally Stubbs with Mare James Dobbins assisting. Contestants arrive from Texas Oklahoma New Mexico and Judy Mracek from Wetumka Alabama.
