Veterans apply for adjusted service certificates and bonuses
The Stamford post plans to have bonus certificates blanks ready for veterans to apply as soon as available with payments expected to begin around July 1. A Legion meeting Monday night will discuss by law changes moving meetings to Tuesday. President Roosevelt defended the bonus bill while urging veterans to hold bonds as nest eggs to ease treasury strain.

Judge C E Coombes says tickets are scarce but a large crowd from Stamford and nearby towns will attend the President's Birthday Ball at the Stamford Country Club Thursday. Net proceeds fund infantile paralysis efforts with 30 percent to the national Warm Springs Foundation and 70 percent kept locally. Three Accidents Send Injured To Local Hospital
A series of incidents within 30 miles of Stamford sent three people to Stamford Sanitarium. Patsy Mitchell, 14, fractured her right leg at Swenson High School and is resting well. Henry Hulsey, 31, was injured by a stick strike while cutting wood and lost consciousness. Jack Beavers, 30, of Stamford, suffered a scalp wound and chest and hand injuries after a collision near Albany.

Revival Meeting Opens at City Auditorium By New Baptist Church
A revival began Sunday at the city auditorium conducted by the newly organized Baptist church. Rev J D Brannon district missionary leads twice daily services at 10 am and 7 30 pm with Pastor Rev P C Williams assisting. Evening prayer follows at 7 o clock with groups for men women and young people. Williams and family moved to Stamford and reside at 659 East Moran street awaiting purchase of a manse.

Stamford and surrounding county were buried by four inches of snow Thursday, the second fall in two weeks and the deepest in ten years. Temperatures ranged from 18F to 16F with early readings as cold as 10F, 7F and 8F later in the week amid a prolonged cold spell.

R J Moberly of Albany and J F McCulloch of Stamford were elected to the Stamford Production Credit Association Board at the January 24 annual meeting in Stamford. A record attendance tracked strong local interest as the association reported loans totaling 249 460 to farmers across Dickens, Stonewall, Kent, King, Shackelford, Knox, Haskell, and Jones counties and noted Texas production credit loans exceeded twelve million dollars in 1935. Dr Virgil P Lee, VP of the Production Credit Corporation of Houston, spoke at the meeting.

Two New Oil Wells Located Near City Settling Basin
Feckham and Danciger announce two new well sites in Stamford 12 miles southeast of the city near the settling basin. No. 1B will target the King sand, 150 feet from lease boundaries, while No. 1A will drill to the Cook sand. These add to eight total locations in the area with initial production around 50 barrels daily and city share projected at about 18.75 barrels for January, yielding roughly $175 after costs. The oil is high grade at about $1.05 per barrel before transport deductions.

Last Day to Pay Poll Taxes for Voting in 1935 Elections
Friday January 31 is the final day to pay poll taxes and qualify to vote in this year’s elections. Persons 60 and over in Jones County are exempt from poll taxes and exemption certificates. Young residents who turned 21 since January 1, 1935 must obtain exemption certificates by January 31. Stamford voters may pay taxes to F E Upshaw and file for rider exemptions by 6 pm today, with Stamford’s four elections set for April two primaries in July and August and the November general election.

Garment Fire Fatal to Hawley Woman Annie Reames
Mrs. Annie Reames of Hawley died from severe burns sustained at her daughter’s home near Hawley. While alone, she lit a large fire for a bath, wore a new gown that caught fire, and could not remove it. She survived three hours before help arrived and was taken to Stamford Sanitarium, where she died on Tuesday morning.

Avoca Opens New PWA School Building Project
Construction of the Avoca school building begins as a $36,384 PWA project to be finished in 160 working days. Superintendent Roy Powell, clergy, and school officials attended the dirt breaking with students. the 172 by 119 foot structure will house eight classrooms, a library, gymnasium auditorium, showers, and offices. Voelcher and Dixon designed the plan. Abilene Construction Co. built it. F. M. Johnson of Lueders is the resident engineer and PWA supervisor.

A telephone call interrupted a robbery in progress as two gunmen held Harry Wood, a Chicago hotel clerk. The men fled without taking any money, realizing the call was a wrong number.

The Stamford Chamber of Commerce banquet will be held Friday at 7 30 PM in St Johns Methodist basement with Harry Hines, chairman of the State Highway Commission, delivering the principal address. Stolen 2000 Pounds of Hides Investigated Near Stamford
About 2000 pounds of hides were stolen from the Gray Brothers butchering pens near Stamford Sunday night. Ed Gray, Giles Kemp, sheriff of Haskell county, and a Haskell county deputy sheriff traveled to Plainview to assist in the investigation. They are expected to return Thursday afternoon.
