Public Relations School Planned in Stamford

Plans for holding a public relations school in Stamford were outlined at a Stamford merchants meeting in city hall. Jerry Hopkins explained that Frank A. Driskill would teach the course, to be held 7 30 p m Monday through Thursday January 30 to February 2, presented by the University of Texas Division of Extension Distributive Education. Driskill has a background in economics at Texas A&M and long experience in publishing and public relations.

Building Permits Take Big Drop in Stamford

Stamford building activity fell across all categories in 1966 with a total spending of 77 200 against 205 900 in 1965. New residences dropped to 58 500 from 147 300 while additions totaled 17 400 down from 53 100 and non residential 1 300 versus 5 500. Economists blame tight money and inflation controls.

Cotton Carryover Reduced As Farmers Hear Progress Talk

Jones County farmers gathered for Farm and Ranch Day in the high school auditorium where Birger Haterius hosted and Pr. Cliff Hobbs outlined five steps to combat root rot. Economist John McHaney warned war timing in Vietnam will affect agriculture with possible slow growth and rising costs, noting record carryover decline and improving export prospects for 1966 cotton.

Ted Gallardo Gunshot Victim Buried Tuesday

Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church for Ted Gallardo 25 of Stamford a gunshot victim. He died Sunday at Stamford Memorial Hospital after being shot in the abdomen while handling a rifle. Gallardo lived at 812 W Mee-Harg St and was married to Inez Cantu. Survivors include his wife two sons his parents five brothers and three sisters. Burial was in Highland Memorial Cemetery with Kinney Funeral Home directing.

Jones FFA 4-H Livestock Show Set at Anson This Saturday

Jones County 4 H and FFA livestock show runs Saturday at Anson in the show barn near Pioneer Hall. Judging begins 9 a m with swine sheep calves and poultry. Superintendents include J F Dozier Dennis Elbrock Kirby Clayton and category chiefs. Judging times roll 1 30 p m dairy cattle 2 p m breeding beef cattle and 3 p m fat steers with judges leading each division. Animals come from county high schools vocational classes and 4H programs.

Local Social Security Office Sees Busy Year in Stamford

Stamford residents filed 173 retirement and survivor claims and 199 continuing benefit actions during 1966 with a visiting Abilene office representative. There were 1178 inquiries, 434 other interviews, 30 disability claims, 9 Medicare enrollments, and 17 Medicare reimbursements across 51 visits.

L M White Rites Held At St Johns Church

Services were held Sunday at St John’s Methodist Church for L M Lee White 64 who died Friday at Stamford Memorial Hospital after a heart attack on December 30. Rev Eugene Matthews officiated with Kinney Funeral Home directing burial in Highland Memorial. He lived at 11 Wells Street and ran the White Service Station. Survivors include his wife Dean Garrett, a son Gene White of Abilene, two grandchildren, three brothers and three sisters. Pallbearers named Durwood Young Stanley McKeever Johnny Hansen John Ed Youngquist R T Taylor and Ryland Gleaton.

Three Injured In Accidents Here Tuesday

Three people were injured Tuesday afternoon in a two car crash on Stamford's northside. Raymond Kittley Denson of Rule drove a northbound pickup that collided with a car driven west on Campbell Street by Mrs. Delores Crane Criswell. Denson Criswell and Vickie Green were injured. Criswell and Green remained in Stamford Memorial Hospital Wednesday morning. The injuries were not considered serious. The accident occurred about 4 30 pm.

Tuberculosis Board To Meet Monday In Hamlin Church

The Jones County Tuberculosis Association will hold a board meeting at 7 30 p m Monday in the First Methodist Church parlor in Hamlin. Leland Clifton of the F M National Bank of Hamlin is president and Mrs W L Hunter Jr of Hamlin is secretary treasurer. All board members and interested citizens are urged to attend.

Births Favor Boys Over Girls In Stamford Year Ended

Stamford registered 129 births with 74 boys and 55 girls. The sex ratio shows three boys per two girls continuing from last year. Deaths total 109 with 59 males and 50 females. age 65 or over accounts for 81 of the deaths. Anglo Americans led with 91 persons, Latin Americans 12, and Negroes 6.

Liquor Violations Dominate Stamford Court’s Year

Stamford corporation court logged 325 cases with liquor violations leading at 156 filings and drunkenness accounting for 62. Traffic offenses ranked second with 272 charged, while disturbances, fighting, and miscellaneous charges totaled 17 1 and 7 respectively. Fines collected reached 5030 dollars.

Harlem Kings to Appear Here Friday Night

A group of Stamford men will form a basketball team as straight men for the Harlem Kings at Stamford High School gym Friday night at 8. Lions Club sponsors the event with tickets from members. A halftime show will feature ball handling and dribbling feats by local players. Stamford Jaycees organize the local team including many coaches.

Merchants Set Nine Holidays for Stamford Firms

Stamford merchants select nine holidays for the coming year. Five days are fixed: Independence Day July 4 Labor Day September 5 Thanksgiving November 24 Christmas December 25 New Year’s Day January 1. The Retail Trade Committee approved the observances for local businesses.

New Parcel Post Rates and ZIP Code Zones Told

Postmaster L E Million of Stamford announces new parcel post rates and a ZIP Code based zone system effective January 15. The plan raises average parcel rates about 10 cents with five annual size and weight increases starting July 1, 1969. Zones derive from the distance between sectional centers, simplifying postage calculations for Abilene Texas area offices.
