PTA Basketball Tourney Helps Reynolds School Clear Debt

About 75 fathers from Reynolds School staged a charity four game PTA basketball tournament in Stamford to raise funds for an air conditioner debt. More than 500 residents attended as players and five women entertained, with the late note burning planned at the PTA meeting after a speech by Dr. H. B. Haterius.

Suits Filed Against Two Over Paving in Stamford

County Judge H G Andrews Jr will disqualify himself as two cases filed by the City of Stamford against C F E Brownfield Jr and Lynn Gillespie move toward hearing. Each suit involves 456.55 alleging voluntary paving agreements and deposited checks that could not be collected after grade disputes halted work on Huldon Road.

Haskell County Grants Pay Hikes

County commissioners in the first session of the new year approved pay raises for clerks deputies and precinct road workers ranging from five to twenty five dollars under the existing salary and wage scale. The same scale will prevail in Jones County as stated by commissioner Hellis Hayne.

Stamford Merchants Pledge Wider Interest in Trade Area

Stamford merchants pledge greater interest in the welfare of the trade area. A Friday meeting at Nat's Cafe outlined steps including a large delegation to the Hamlin Board of Community Development and school or PTA sponsored shows to entertain surrounding communities. The group named a committee to develop details and reported insurance on Christmas decorations will yield a small fund balance.

Ryland Gleaton filed to place his name on Stamford's mayoral ballot as he seeks the city’s top post in a year opening votes for mayor and two council seats. Church of Christ to Host Area Youth Meeting

The South Orient Church of Christ will hold a Friday night youth area meeting at 7 30 in its auditorium. Carl Spain of Hillcrest Church Abilene will speak and answer questions during an open forum. Youth from 20 congregations across Abilene to Albany will attend.

First National Bank Names Two New Directors

At the annual meeting stockholders added W. B. Harrison Sr. and Fort Smith Mr. Smith to the board, replacing TL A Upshaw who retired. All other directors were re elected. Upshaw served about 40 years and declined re election. Officers elected for the coming year include President W T Stovall and Vice President Kart Smith.

Holidays Set By Merchants

Stamford merchants set the business holidays for the year in a retail trade committee meeting. The five days observed last year will be observed again: Memorial Day May 30 through June 4, Independence Day July 4, Thanksgiving on November 23, Christmas December 25, and New Year’s Day January 1.

Grease Fire Damages Pryor Home

A pan of grease caught fire at the home of Dr. George Pryor around noon Wednesday. Flames were contained to the kitchen area but smoke damaged part of the house as city firefighters responded to the call.

Poll Tax Payments Lagging in Jones County

Jones County poll tax receipts are far behind last year as of Monday noon. A. J. French notes only 115 receipts issued at Anson and 25 sold at the Stamford Chamber office, with last year’s total above 4200. Voters will elect city and school officials and a U.S. senator to succeed Lyndon B. Johnson.

Motor Vehicle Receipts Reach New County Peak

Jones County tax records show motor vehicle receipts totaling 12 356 so far this year and surpassing the prior record of 12 199 set the previous year. Tax assessor A J French notes sales run through April 1 and that 1961 plates go on February 1 with some 1960 tags required for new cars and out of state plates.

All-Girl Stonewall County 4H Livestock Team Routs Judges

The Stonewall County junior 4H livestock judging team, all girls including Ann Cumbie Joann Poore Brenda Dalby and Bea Cochran, placed second in District 3 at Childress. Nine teams competed with Stonewall totaling 770 to Wichita 747 and Hall County first. Ann Cumbie led the team with fourth overall and Poore sixth.

Open House Draws Large Crowd at Trinity Church Dedication

More than 400 people attend Trinity Baptist Church open house after the dedication service for the new sanctuary. Rev L Le Trott of Abilene gives the dedication address with Rev Clyde Cook leading the responsive reading and prayer. Tours of the facility are offered as completion of classrooms is anticipated in about four weeks with continued work by church members.
