County commissioners tackle first of year business

Jones County officials met for a full day to set salaries and approve annual pay actions. The board approved small raises for two employees, established deputy sheriff starting pay at 300, and added major medical coverage with a 15 percent next year reduction anticipated from Blue Cross.

Four Arrested For Burglary Of Automobiles

Four Stamford youths, including a juvenile and a probationer, were charged this week after four automobile burglaries in Stamford during the early hours of December 22. Vandalized cars on Vanderbilt and Compton streets yielded clothing, a .22 rifle, a purse, cigarettes, and a coat. bond was set at 2500 for each arrestee.

Stamford Men Indicted in Mail Fraud Case

Two Stamford men, Tommy Hammer and John Earl Anders, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Abilene on mail fraud charges. The suspects allegedly defrauded Farmers Insurance Group of Austin by submitting false auto insurance claims.

Farm and Ranch Day Program Set for Jan 24 at Stamford High

A Jones County Farm and Ranch Day program is scheduled Friday January 24 at Stamford High School Auditorium. Guest speaker Jack Barton of Houston’s Federal Intermediate Credit Bank will discuss Financing Agriculture in the Seventies. Master of ceremonies Birger Haterius will introduce other speakers and entertain after a meal at 6 15. Prizes include a Stetson hat and a steak dinner for two.

Sanford Hodge Rites Held Here Tuesday

Funeral for Sanford Hodge 62 Stamford theatre operator was held at St John’s Methodist Church. He died after a long illness and arthritis limited his mobility in later years. Survivors include his wife Omie, a son Sanford Jr, three grandsons, a sister Ruth Laird of Odessa, and a brother Howard of Midland.

Dobbins Family Mourns Homer Dobbins Abilene Obituary

Homer Dobbins longtime Spur resident died Tuesday in Hendrick Memorial Hospital. Funeral held Wednesday at Spur First Baptist Church. Born July 16 1888 in Miami County he married Corrie Watts in Lagerton. Three Abilene Men Arrested After Shoplifting Spree

Three Abilene men were held in Stamford jail Tuesday night after arrests in connection with a shoplifting spree in Abilene and Anson. Much merchandise was recovered and identified by Anson merchants. The men were taken to Anson Wednesday where charges were to be filed.

Jones County sheriff's department investigates a burglary at Shipp's Drug Store in Leeders. Deputy Frank Wilson found narcotics missing after inspecting the store Sunday night.

Farmer Fish Fry Hosted by Herman Cox at 7 P.M.

Herman Cox of Jones County Implement Co will host a Friday night fish fry for area farmers and ranchers. The event starts at seven o'clock and invites local agricultural workers to gather.

Collision Spills Gasoline on Road Near Avoca

A collision between an oil field equipment truck and an oil tanker near Avoca on U S 380 caused gasoline leaks. Gulf Oil Co. tanker and McGargle Drilling Co. truck collided around 3 15 p m, spilling fuel from two compartments. Stamford firemen washed the highway and the road reopened after about four hours. Patrolman Ocle Renfrow led the investigation with assistance from Patrolman Dan Van Zandt.

County Livestock Show at Anson Saturday

Almost 300 entries have been received for the Jones County 4H and FFA livestock show to be held in Anson Saturday at the show barn near Pioneer Hall. Hamlin hosts with Milburn Wink and T. C. Blankenship as general superintendents.

Graveside Rites Held in Carlsbad for Infant Tracy Dean Hambright

Graveside rites were held January 9 in Carlsbad New Mexico for Tracy Dean Hambright infant son of Tracy and Mrs Tracy Hambright born January 5 at a Carlsbad hospital and died January 7. Lions To Honor City Employees At Banquet

The Stamford Lions Club will host the second annual city appreciation banquet on Tuesday night February 17. All city employees will be guests and the oldest serving employee will be recognized. last year the honor went to Robert Dickenson, city utilities superintendent.

Tournament Rescheduled and Local Basketball Roundup

The B team and Freshman tournament here is postponed to February 10. The Bulldogs lost twice last week with Merkel narrowly beating them 54 to 53 as Roy Weaks scored 19. Anson Tigers topped the Bulldogs 67 to 55 with Weaks netting 27. Winters comes Friday and Coleman begins the district second round on Tuesday.

Watson Named New Director of First National Stamford

The board of First National Bank of Stamford grows from eight to nine members at the annual meeting. Local attorney Jack Watson was named the new director, with W T Stovall announcing the change. Cotton crop in Rolling Plains called fantastic despite low prices

B. B. Manly Jr of USDA reports Rolling Plains farmers expect nearly 500000 bales in 1968 with classing already at 444382 bales by Jan 7, up from 258702 in 1967. Prices slumped in late 1968 though crop quality and staple length improved due to better varieties.
