Commissioners Set Salaries Renew Contracts in Busy Session

County commissioners kept salaries flat for county and elected officials for the coming year. An item list includes a $25 monthly raise already granted in 1964, district judge Owen Thomas appointing Carl Savage as auditor at $475 monthly, and Wayne Thurman named county purchasing agent. The board renewed numerous contracts, bonds, and service agreements, and approved hiring actions and easement efforts for Highway 277.

Program Set for County Soil Fertility Day

Six distinguished speakers will address the Jones County Soil Fertility Day on January 21 at Roundup Hall Texas Cowboy Reunion Grounds. The program runs 9 45 a m to 2 20 p m with officials from the Texas Agricultural Extension Service Fort Worth and Denver Railway leading discussions on steer feeding cow calf operations soil testing fertilization and boll weevil control.

Stamford School to Integrate Next September

Stamford schools will be fully integrated starting with the September term after a 13-5 State Board vote to comply with the 1964 civil rights law. About 100 Booker T. Washington students will be absorbed into the district system as planning continues under H. S. FitzGerald.

Marriage Licenses Show Sharp Drop in 1964

Issuance of marriage licenses fell to 194 in 1964 from 253 in 1963, according to records in the office of County Clerk Roy Thorn. The decline is noted in the 12-month period ending last year.

County rejects Hamlin fire aid. mulls tank truck

Jones County Commissioners Court rejected Hamlin's plea for financial help to fight rural fires. Commissioner Agnew proposed converting an old gravel truck into a water tank with a pump for rural fires, while other precincts already use similar equipment. The court suggested private donations or county aid via individuals, noting Anson and other departments already have setups in place.

Stamford All-Sports Banquet Honors High School Athletes

Stamford High School athletes will be honored at the All-Sports Banquet on Thursday January 21 in the Stamford National Guard Armory. Sponsored by local clubs and the Stamford Chamber of Commerce Athletic Committee, the event features Field Scovell as guest speaker and Bob Prichard as master of ceremonies. Larry Wartes will present awards to the team led by captain Johnny Massey with invocation by David Freeman and benediction by Eugene Matthews.

Griggs Service Held Monday In Chapel

Joanie W. Griggs died Sunday morning at Stamford Memorial Hospital from a gunshot wound to the temple. A Justice of the Peace ruled the death was caused by a gunshot related to personal safety. Funeral services were held Monday at Kinney Funeral Chapel with two pastors officiating. Griggs, born November 12 1890 in McLennan County, moved to Stamford in 1906 from Waco. Survived by two sons and three daughters, twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren, plus one brother and three sisters. Pallbearers named A C Robison Cecil Hughes Luther Boldin Eddie Taylor Bill Hughes Holber Berry.

Students Plan Benefit Show for March of Dimes

The Stamford area launches its March of Dimes drive with Mothers' March on January 21 starting at Oliver Street School cafeteria. Stamford High School Student Council plans a January 27 talent show at Grand Theater, with top acts advancing to a January 30 telethon on local Abilene TV. proceeds support the charity.

Camp Fire Council Installs Bill Jones as President

Bill Jones was installed as president of the Stamford Camp Fire Council at a Jan. 4 dinner meeting at Cliff House. New officers include Herschel Kelley vice president Katheryn Byrd secretary Harvey Penney treasurer and others. Plans were finalized for a winter candy sale starting Feb. 1 to fund the summer camp trip to Lueders.

Oil Mill Road Survey Underway For Farm to Market Link

Right of way for a new farm to market road west of the oil mill toward Hamlin is being surveyed under Hamlin highway engineer Nelson Shave. Phase one will surface the road to near Tuxedo and should finish this year. The road will join Highway 277 beside the Texas Cowboy Reunion Grounds and extend westward known as Oil Mill Road.

Burglary Reported at MKT Tool House

Stamford police investigate a weekend burglary at the MKT Tool House here. Thieves stole tools and equipment valued around $232 including a cutting torch two gauges 50 feet of hose two jacks and two shovels.

Fire damages gas range in Stamford apartment garage

Fire at a garage apartment on Wells Street at 11 99 pm Sunday January 10 caused considerable damage to a gas range but only slight damage to the rest of the apartment. The fire was confined to the gas range and quickly extinguished by Stamford Fire Department units.

4 H Club FFA Livestock Show Saturday in Jones County

The Jones County Livestock Show starts at 9:00 a.m. Saturday with 342 entries across six divisions drawn from Jones County 4-H and FFA chapters in Anson Avoca Hamlin Hawley Leeder's Noodle and Stamford. Officials include Charles Stenholm Avoca and Weldon Holbrooks Stamford as show superintendents with judging by 9:00 a.m. and dairy cattle to follow sheep judging.

Funeral services for J. R. Missionary Teal to Speak at Trinity Brotherhood Chili Supper

VEW Poll Tax Supper to be Hosted by Veterans Group

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post S179 will host its annual poll tax supper at the post home on Saturday night January 16. A western string band will provide music for the dance to follow the supper. A current poll tax receipt grants admission for members and invited guests. Poll tax may be paid at the post home that night.

Methodist Church Burglary Reported in Stamford

Stamford police investigated a break in at St John’s Methodist Church on Tuesday night January 12. Chief B Q Cooper said cash of about $13 was taken from the church secretary’s office and an attempt was made to break into the Coke in the church basement.
