Stamford closed 1935 with 21.72 inches of rain, none in the last three months. Normal yearly rainfall is 25.03 inches, with 1955 monthly totals showing light winter moisture and a drought from October onward. Farmers warn that lack of rain threatens next year's crops.
More than 2,000 complaints have been filed across 18 counties against ASC quotas. Of these, 143 came via the Stamford Chamber of Commerce, with others from Anson and Hamlin. A suit challenges allotment fairness and may delay review hearings. If plaintiffs win, quotas would be recalculated per county.
Kimbell Cox, a 11 year old boy, has returned to Stamford school without a brace or crutch after four years of treatment following an accident with his heel. He previously lived in Wichita Falls with the Carl Coopers and now plans to attend school in Wichita Falls twice weekly for continued treatments while living with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Cox. Christmastime brought joy to the family.
Word of Stamford High School state championship buzz spreads as a shipment from Mailwell Envelope Co. in Houston arrived labeled Stamford American Stamford Texas Home of the 1955 AA Champs reflecting local pride and recognition.
First National Bank of Stamford reports deposits for December 31 1955 at 6 111 00 up from 5 993 590 a year earlier with over 100000 gain aided by increased business oil activity and delayed rentals. Loans fell from 1 729 808 on October 5 to 1 554 699 by year end. Directors and officers were re elected at the stockholders meeting including T A Upshaw as president and G J Smith as director.
The Stamford Bulldogs travel to Anson for a Friday night game after a district schedule change. Stamford lost 60 to 54 at Colorado City on Tuesday, and Anson will host the rescheduled contest in Bulldog Gym on January 31.
Stamford families the Corleys J R McDaniels and the Floyd Wiley lost cottages in a January 7 lake fire. Fire, starting about 30 p m, swept the three west side cottages. Estle Gilleland’s cottage caught fire but was saved. Jody Earles alerted authorities. no one was present during the blaze.
Stamford residents will buy balloons and peanut packs Saturday to raise funds for the March of Dimes. Local groups, led by Garland Zimmerman and Wimmerman, will staff downtown streets, with envelopes and dime-cards collected by civic clubs. Jaycees plan a wheelbarrow marathon, PTA units back Porchlight Campaign, and county chairs coordinate a series of promotions through Hamlin and Anson.
Feldt Manufacturing Co. will hold its annual stockholders meeting at the plant on Wednesday January 18 at 2 o'clock. The session will include a report on operations since moving from Temple and an election of directors. The firm faced financial difficulties this year and reached a creditor settlement with payments underway.
Stamford sees multiple ownership changes as Arledge Ice Co. sells to Horace Arledge and Johnny Grissom now renamed Arledge and Grissom. Modern Food Market passes to C B Wallace. Mrs Wilson's Pastry Kitchen bought by Jack Prince. E L Wilson retires for health. Hussey's Grocery becomes Young's Grocery under new owners. The Arledge group also includes ice, feed locker, meat processing, boat and outboard sales, and real estate with the ice company founded in 1929 by Roy and Henry Arledge.
Stamford Classroom Teachers Association will host the Jones County State Teachers Association on Monday January 16 at 7 pm in the high school auditorium. Hospitality chair Miss Allie King leads a committee including Mrs. W A Grimes Irene Parker Mrs. O F Cochran Mrs. Alma McNutt Mrs. W A Thompson Mrs H J Merriott and Mrs R L Stokes. Stamford High School band directed by William E Mayes will perform and Jones County TSTA plans the program including a speaker address.
Stamford recorded 213 births in 1955 with 112 boys and 101 girls. Of the total, 121 were Anglo Saxon, 31 Latin Americans, and 88 were colored, per City Registrar Tom Eliott.
Company M of the 142nd Infantry in Stamford received a superior rating after a federal inspection. Lt. Col. Hodgkinson and Capt. James Lindsey announced the award at a Monday meeting, noting high attendance, flawless records, qualified instructors, and exemplary discipline. The unit, with 95 enlisted men and six officers, also earned the Army National Guard (Silver) certificate for efficiency in training.
Stamford City Council opened bids from six contractors for a 16 inch cement lined steel pipe from the filter plant to Reynolds street and onward to connect with the main from Lueders. Lowest bid 60 422 85 from R B Hodgson of Lubbock with several others close behind. Council to tabulate bids before action and may seek funds to cover the cost.
H Hisey a 69 year old Paint Creek area farmer died Sunday morning at John Sealy Hospital from burns sustained January 4 while burning prickly pears. He was flown to Galveston Thursday with his doctor from Stamford Sanitarium. Funeral held at Haskell Church of Christ with burial in Willow Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Eva Emaline Stark three sons C D Hisey John H Hisey and H Hisey plus two daughters Mrs Marvin Letz and Mrs S R McFarland.
Silas Triplett of the Stamford Church of Christ will address the Senior PTA on January 17 at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. The program titled The Family Creates Skilled Hands will be discussed with William E Mayes providing special music.
Stamford Future Farmers from Stamford High School will stage two warm-up shows for livestock projects. The first, January 21 at 9 a.m., features sheep and cattle entries on the square south parking area with 49 entries. The February 10 event at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds hosts swine and broiler shows with 48 and about 30 entries respectively. Clemon Montgomery of Big Spring will judge. Stamford Chamber of Commerce will award ribbons. no cash prizes. The county livestock show follows on February 11 at the same Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds.
Radio station KDWT begins a daily six day a week family worship period from 7 to 7 15 am with a speaker and music. Station owner David Ratliff announced the nondenominational devotional program is taped and already underway.
Jones County residents invited to a public singing event at Davie Church Sunday January 15 at 2 pm. The church sits six miles east of Hamlin on Stam ford and Hamlin highway and welcomes all attendees.
