Stamford Rotary adopts 25 children for school attendance

Stamford Rotarians plan to "adopt" about 25 children lacking clothing and equipment to ensure they attend school next Monday morning. C E Brownfield chairs the special committee and expects all children in class soon. The club's lunch program featured talks on international medical exchange and Mexico attitudes.

St John’s W M S Holds Meeting at Methodist Church

St John’s Methodist Wo man’s Missionary Society met Monday afternoon with Mrs J H ord elected president presiding. Mrs Burl McClellan led the program and committees were named for local Christian social relations and spiritual life. Mrs E B Bowen gave the devotional theme The One Clear Call. Funds and pledges for 1936 were discussed and the 300 edge paid in full.

The Presbyterian Church plans a morning sermon on the world’s urgent need for Christ’s authoritative message in 1937. At five o’clock a brief Hosea exposition closes a Sunday program. Mrs. Swenson Davis Bitten by Stray Dog on Way to Work

Mrs. Swenson Davis was bitten by a stray dog while on her way to work last week and went to Austin for rabies treatment. A Stamford card note said she was progressing and would stay about two weeks for care.

College Program at Nazarene Church

An interesting program is planned at the Nazarene Church on Saturday night January 9 at 7 20. The Peniel College quartet from Bethany Oklahoma will sing and present picture slides of the college and campus. The public is invited and Nazarene members away from town receive a special invitation.

New Year’s Wake at Swedish Lutheran Church

A New Year’s Eve service at the Swedish Lutheran Church in Ericksdal, led by Rev. Hugo B. Haterius, featured a Luther League program with readings, vocal and instrumental pieces, a playlet, and a social hour. The church bell rang in 1937 as prayers concluded.

Vera Mae Tidwell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Tidwell of Stamford, was the first baby born in the Stamford Sanitarium in 1937. The child arrived at 4 15 a.m. on January 4.

Hamlin Baby Dies at Stamford Sanitarium

Marion Bryant Courtney, a year old Hamlin child, died of pneumonia at Stamford Sanitarium Tuesday morning at 6 30 o clock. The child was brought to the hospital Wednesday of last week.

Births in Stamford Exceed Deaths by 70 in Year Just Closed

Births in Stamford for the year 1986 totaled 167, deaths 97, a net positive of 70. Dr. N. H. Rickley public health officer notes prior years show 1935 with 200 births to 43 deaths, 1984 with 257 births and 108 deaths, and 1923 with 150 births and 02 deaths. The long list of deaths in 1936 includes many local residents dying from heart attack, pneumonia, accidents, and other illnesses.

Day and Night Service Station Remodel Under Way

The Day and Night Service Station at the corner of North Swenson and Moran Street is undergoing a modernization project this week. Owner G. C. Carothers is overseeing work with contractor W. A. Simpson. operator Edgar Sorrell says the station is being rebuilt into a 8937 model with a revised layout and lowered floor to street level, slated for completion around February 1.

Mrs. W. F. Baize Dies of Pneumonia at 69 in Stamford

Mrs. Annie Mae Fowler Baize, 69, wife of a Jones County farmer, died at Stamford Sanitarium from pneumonia after prior bouts. Funeral held at Anson Methodist Church with Rev. G. B. Mrs. J. C. Bradshaw 88 of Roby died quietly in sleep at 10:55 pm Sunday January 4. Survived by daughter Mrs. W. M. Cass and four sons, 15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and sister Mrs. Yarits. Funeral held at First Baptist Church with pastors Rev. Reed and Dr. Mel G. Hospital Births Show Shifting Gender Balance Over Year

The record notes 16 girls and an unspecified number of boys born at the hospital earlier in the year. On Christmas Day seven babies arrived, four boys and three girls. Throughout the year the balance shifted, with periods where boys led and others where girls were more numerous.

New Company Takes Charge as Ford Dealer

Stamford Motor Company, Inc., formed from L B Scott’s ownership, takes over as Ford dealer in Stamford. Ruby Lee Brooks of Lubbock becomes secretary treasurer and moves to Stamford. Glenn Heas of Lubbock is president, A N Reed is vice president, with Brooks and Reed handling the office. Universal Credit Company will finance the business.

Rainfall totals for 1936 in Stamford recorded

Government records show Stamford received 26.40 inches of rainfall in 1936. September accounted for 12.20 inches, with monthly figures including January 0.43, March 0.46, April 1.97, May 4.27, July 2.78, October 0.18, November 0.61, December 0.50 inches. February, June, August had no measurable rainfall.

Will Monroe Wright 80 Dies After Illness at Home

Will Monroe Wright aged 80 died Sunday night at the home of his daughter Mrs W Masters west of Avoca after a period of illness. He had lived with his daughter since his wife's death in Granbury in 1992. Funeral services were held at Avoca Baptist Church Tuesday morning with Rev Joel V Grimes, followed by a land-transport burial beside his wife in Granbury. Kinney Funeral Home had charge of burial arrangements. Born December 3, 1856 in Missouri, Wright later lived in Granbury and joined the church in 1926. Surviving are three sons Walter of Deming NM Tom of Oklahoma and George of Granbury.
