Dr J H Rutherford marked his 80th birthday with an open house at his home. Over 150 guests attended, with hosts Dr and Mrs J H Rutherford and Mr and Mrs W Harrison Durrett. A musical program featured Mrs N M Phy, Mrs R P R Baird, and young singers, and the celebration included a joint birthday tribute to Mrs W B Harrison. Guests from Abilene Dallas and Sweetwater attended. a red leather bound guest book was presented. The event continued on the back page.

Community-Wide Preaching Mission Opens Monday
The Ministerial Alliance will hold a five night mission from Monday January 11 through Friday January 15 at 7 20 pm with a different host church each evening. Stamford gins had ginned 10 475 bales of cotton up to 4 p.m. Wednesday. Gins operate daily and while daily amounts taper, much cotton remains to be harvested. Ginners expect to stay in operation into February or beyond as farmers finish picking.

The cotton outlook for 1954 shows large supplies and moderate to lower demand. Upland cotton 1953-54 supply about 25 percent above normal with a carryover near 8.4 million bales. marketing quotas set at 10 million for upland and 30 thousand for ELS, with a 90 percent parity support price. Domestic mill use seen falling to 9–9.5 million bales and 1953 synthetic fiber use at a record 16 billion pounds, signaling a small decline in domestic mill consumption. Exports in 1951-52 and 1952-53 fell from 5.5 to 3.0 million bales. 1953-54 may edge back to 1952-53 levels or better. The 1954 crop will be supported at 90% parity and faced with acreage allotments that may lift prices but reduce cash receipts.

The American Legion and Auxiliary sent 48 gifts to the State Hospital in Abilene for Christmas and many more to the Veterans' hospital gift shop in Waco.
