Stamp sales at the Stamford post office rose in 1960 to 71 997 64, up 3 659 99 from 1959, per Postmaster EF B Britton. The year’s peak month was December with about 10 899 84 in 1960. Only three months beat 1959 in 1960, March April and May, with other months alternating ahead or behind.
Funeral services for H. Jd. Moreland Sr. of Abilene will be at 10 o clock Friday at Elliott's Chapel of Memories in Abilene. He died Wednesday in an Abilene hospital after a heart condition. He formerly ran a wholesale grocery business and later operated Dr Pepper Bottling Co in Abilene and has worked in investments. He was a Presbyterian.
Stamford hosts the Stamford Invitational as teams Abilene Junior Varsity and eight others compete in a two bracket format. Friday features four top games including Winters versus Breckenridge and Hamlin versus Abilene Cooper with winners advancing to late rounds while consolation battles set near evenings. Final rounds conclude Saturday with third place and championship showdowns.
Funeral services for Mrs Frankie A Fowler 71 were held Friday in Kinney Funeral Chapel. She died December 28 in Anson Rest Home after two years ill health. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery. Survivors include three sons and eight grandchildren. Her husband Henry J Fowler died in 1948. She was born May 21, 1889 in Frankston Texas. She moved to Stamford in 1937 and belonged to the Baptist Church.
Mr and Mrs Edward Mueh sten and their baby travel from Denton to spend time with Mr Jacob Muehlstein.
Joan Wienke daughter of Mr and Mrs Les Wienke of Lubbock and former Old Glory resident was among 20 cottonbelt beauties from 12 states. She took second alternate in the Maid of Cotton Contest in Memphis Tennessee on December 30 finishing behind Nancy Sue Gray and Linda Joy Lackey.
Dedication services are scheduled next week for Trinity Baptist Church new addition with nightly services January 11 through 14 at 7 30 p m and 2 30 p m Sunday Speakers include Rev Roland Williams Rev Bill Crafton Rev Clyde Cook and Rev Biddy Wrinkle Additional service January 15 at 2 30 p m in the new auditorium Open house follows L L Trott will speak Other participants include Harold Walker Wayne Baldwin and N W Jones The 347 member church seats 600 contains multiple nurseries departments and classrooms with an annual budget of 30000 and 297 Sunday School members 207 Training Union enrolment and various church groups
Trinity Baptist Church history chronicles four pastors over 17 years and three name changes. Leaders Hull Jones Williams Crafton Cook guided growth from East Davenport Street to Vanderbilt corner and a May 1997 dedication as the new sanctuary opened, with expansion including a parsonage at 12 Cuba Street and continued music and youth program growth.
Minnie Chatwell Newton 80, of 410 E. Oliver St Stamford, died Wednesday morning after illness since February. Born in Denton March 12 1880, she married William Wesly Newton February 26 1890s in Seymour. Funeral Thursday 2 p.m. Kinney Chapel with Rev Burgin Watkins officiating burial Willow Cemetery Haskell. Survived by son Ed Stamford daughter Mrs Melvin Morgan Stamford nine grandchildren nine great grandchildren. A son V F died in 1945.
Water department reports new meter installations this week for residents including Jake Mullins at 809 EE, Rey Reynolds, W H Hargrove at 612 EF, Rey N C Johnson at 814 S Anson, Robert Edwards at 306 St Mor an, D C Hullum at 113 FE Daven port, and Henry Estrada at 403 5S Buie.
A young Aspermont girl admitted to Stamford Sanatorium with diphtheria last week has responded well and is expected to be dismissed Thursday. The patient is Shelley Royston, daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Royston.
Funeral services for Emil Justin Boedeker aged 5 were held Tuesday at St. Ann Catholic Church after a heart attack at his home ten miles northwest of Stamford. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery with Kinney Funeral Home directing. Survivors include his wife Olga Schroeder Boedeker five sons two daughters grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The Stamford Camp Fire Council will meet Monday night at Nat's Cafe for a regular session discussing upcoming activities and community outreach.
The fifth annual Stamford FFA Livestock Show will be held on the square Saturday morning with more than 150 entries. Judging will begin at 8 20, with beef cattle dairy cattle sheep swine and poultry in the lineup. A new class commercial beef was added last year and ribbons will go to eight places. The show will be directed by Wedon Holbrooks and Brad Rowland with Jim Laurie as judge.
Stamford reports 33 new one family homes valued at 264 450 and 18 buildings with 36 units built by Stamford Housing Authority at 405 000 This is the largest annual total in two years Church construction reached 258 000 with further gains in commercial and remodeling projects Stamford records are submitted annually to the University of Texas Bureau of Business Research per City Building Inspector Dick Rowland.
Open house at Heritage Homes in Stamford was not held due to bad weather. By midweek 24 of 36 units were occupied with 29 assigned and seven vacancies to fill. The project includes five locations in town and Kinney Furniture Co was to furnish one unit on McGown Street.
The Jones County 4H and FRA Livestock Show will be staged January 13 and 14 in Anson at the new Jones County Fair live stock barn. Entries come from Jamlin Stamford Lueders Avoca Hawley and Anson with prize money and judges fees funded by Chambers of Commerce in Anson Stamford and Hamlin. Marvin Weber of Power Feed Co Abilene will judge swine and sheep with judging starting Friday afternoon and again Saturday morning for cattle.
The Lueders Community Livestock Show returns Saturday with more than 20 entries competing near the football field. Prize money exceeds the thousands with awards for showmanship and livestock in each class and an all around showmanship prize. Judge Jack Handcock of the Coleman Production Credit Association will oversee the event. Entries must be on the east side by 9 30 a m with judging to follow.
A 15 year old Latin American youth started a crime spree Friday night by breaking into three businesses and stealing a 1957 Ford pickup. Police intercepted him near Anson at 11 05 after a call at 10 20, with loot including pennies from a vending machine, 20 to 60 cents from Doyle's Shop, a 22 pistol and shells from White Auto Store. The suspect was taken to Gatesville reformatory. the Woffords’ missing pickup prompted a police chase.
Stamford police picked up three gum machines from a trash can this week. Mrs. W. H. Plant of 518 S Yale Street found the machines and alerted officers. No clues about their origin or missing reports locally.
Dr. Trugo B. Haterius of Bethel Lutheran spoke at a Stamford Rotary luncheon critiquing federal aid to education and urging optimism. He urged cooperative effort, cited the Production Credit Association and Rural Electrification as models, urged staying to develop agriculture, and noted Texas independence with $54.30 on hand.
