Accidental shooting ruled in Stamford man death

Justice of the Peace Mozelle Nance ruled the December 23 shooting death of 23 year old Johnny Lynn Schwettman at 303 Handlan as accidental. An autopsy was ordered and the body sent to Hendrick Medical Center. Two juvenile witnesses reported the incident, with one pistol found at the scene. Schwettman, an oilfield worker, had been drinking earlier that morning. Funeral services were held at Temple Baptist Church in Stamford with burial in Willow Cemetery in Haskell. He is survived by a son, mother, father, two brothers, and a step sister. Pallbearers were Marshall McNeely, Dale Pritchard, Johnny Petty, L H Simpson, Hollis Bosse, and Mike McBay.

Cotton farmers reap benefits of dry spell and gins

Area farmers used the dry weather to strip fields as gins report totals: Bricksdale 1340 bales, Denson 1152, Stamford 1044, Smith 936, Avoca 400, Paymaster 570. 1979 totals ranged higher, and Farmer's Co-op noted 73 cents a pound as locals hope for a bumper 1941 similar to 1979.

Tri County Livestock Show set for Saturday at Showbarn

The Tri County Livestock Show, sponsored by Paint Creek Lueders Avoca and Stamford, will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday January 10 at the Tri-Area Livestock Association Showbarn on the Texas Cowboy Reunion Grounds. A total of 326 entries are listed with judging for swine rabbits broilers beef cattle and sheep, plus halter show steers commercial calves capons dairy cattle and breeding sheep. The Tri Area Livestock Association meeting follows at 11:15 with a financial report and two two year board terms up for election.

Stenholm travels to Europe for conference in Bavaria

Congressman Charles W. Stenholm joined 17 lawmakers on a four day conference with German leaders in Bavaria after Congress adjourned. The bipartisan group met with Bundestag members from the Christian Social Union and Bavarian officials to discuss defense SALT NATO East West relations and economic issues such as inflation unemployment and energy. Stenholm said the exchanges provided useful information and offered a candid assessment of shared interests between the nations.

Early Morning Fire Destroys Home in Stamford

Fire at 206 North Hobart at 4 56 a m on December 26 damaged the dining room after a candle left overnight ignited a curtain. Linda Massik and her baby escaped with no injuries as Stamford fire units responded. Fire chief Bill Lawson noted extensive dining room damage from the blaze.

Stamford American Closed Thursday for New Year Holiday

The Stamford American will be closed Thursday in observance of the New Year’s holiday. Offices reopen Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stamford City Hall Jones County courthouse and the local post office are closed. Big Country Savings and First National Bank of Stamford also closed. Happy New Year.
