Less Fortunate Remembered at Christmas Time

Stamford’s churches United Charities Rotary Club and American Legion organized Christmas aid. Six churches distributed 110 baskets of food ahead of Christmas. 85 at the American Legion Christmas tree event. West Side Baptist and United Charities provided toys fruit and candy to various groups. Colored and Mexican children also benefited from United Charities support.

Artman Daniels Former Resident Dies in Fort Worth

Funeral services for Artman Daniels of Fort Worth a former Stannord citizen were held Saturday. He was 41 and had been ill ten months. Survivors include his wife three daughters Earlene Sarah Jo Franconia and Billie and his mother and sister Mrs Will Andrews and Dick Rowland. The family lived at 2506 McKay Fort Worth.

Midnight Christmas Service at Bethel Lutheran

The Bethel Lutheran Church held a midnight Christmas Eve service led by Rev. Hugo B. Haterius with Swedish and English hymns. Special music featured Hugo Birger Haterius and Mrs Haterius, and offertory proceeds supported Home Missions. The following Sunday morning service was led by Rev. Haterius with ushers Leroy Lundgren and Milton Haterius.

Stamford District WMS to Hold Meeting

The Woman's Missionary Society of the Stamford District announces an officers training day on Friday January 5 at the Stamford meeting venue. Mrs Rutherford of Stamford will serve as secretary and lead the session with officers from auxiliaries and the Stamford district participating.

Heavy Snow Transforms Stamford Into Christmas Wonder

Stamford enjoyed a brilliant Christmas setting as 3 to 4 inches of snow fell Christmas morning and lingered through the day. Snowmen appeared quickly in yards and children held snowball fights while holiday lights glittered on homes. The downtown area and post office plaza sparkled under snow and lamplight, creating a fairy-tale scene.

Hilliard Builds 1.7 Miles of Terraces Near Stamford

W T Hilliard, a Water Facilities cooperative, has completed 1.7 miles of terraces on his farm eight miles southeast of Stamford using a small terracer and tractor. He worked alone and plans a syrup pan system to support terrace crops. Excess water from about 100 acres is spread over 75 acres with windmill powered irrigation and a stock pond for farmstead needs.

Weldon Walker to Return Home Friday from Burma Service

Weldon Walker, chief computer for Petty Geophysical Engineering Company, will arrive in Abilene Friday to reunite with his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Walker and sister Mrs. Roy Cochran. Returning from foreign service, he traveled from Rangoon Burma, via stops in Sumatra and Java, to San Pedro California, then spent 18 months abroad before extending six more months.

Rainfall Totals for Stamford Through 1939

Stamford records show total rainfall of 17.09 inches for 1939 up to December 28. December brought 0.75 inch, with 0.20 inch from Friday showers and 0.55 inch after Monday’s snow. Farmers noted the snow’s moisture benefited the ground more than heavy rain. Snow returned Thursday morning. Stamford’s 1938 rainfall was 25.16 inches, 1937 was 18.98, 1936 was 26.40, and the long term average is 23.06 inches.

Family Gathering Held Christmas at J. E. Skiles Home

Descendants of Mrs. Susan Eme line Justus and relatives joined a Christmas Day celebration at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Skiles. Four generations attended with nine Justus grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren noted. An old fashioned Christmas dinner was served with W. B. West Jr. visiting. Several Skiles relatives from New Hope area attended. one daughter Mrs Luther York and her children Leta Jo and Patsy were absent.
