Washington lawmakers debate party realignment as Hoover's era fades. Republicans contend for new leadership to cut ties with Wall Street while moderates battle radicals. Democrats split between conservative allies and reformers seeking broader government control of industry.
United States Senator Tom Connally urged Texas Democrats to back the Roosevelt recovery program as he left Dallas for Washington. He cited nine months of progress, noting improvements in cotton and wheat prices, Texas cotton and farm support funding, and the broader revival felt by banks merchants and individuals in the state.
Christmas shoppers overwhelmed Stamford merchants with December sales surpassing four prior years and signaling a return to normal buying power. Early month activity built to a peak last Saturday night as crowds filled stores, shelves emptied, and sidewalks littered with boxes and paper.
Community members gathered at the Methodist Church for a Christmas tree and weekend visitors from Wichita Falls Fort Worth Denton Abilene Lubbock and New Mexico included families of White Apperson Pritchard Rutherford Pipes and Ashburn. A nation-wide C W A project to install sanitary closets under United States Public Health Service supervision begins in Jones county. Jerry C Wilson from the State Health Board leads the work with seventeen men employed through C W A funds and about seventy local workers over two months. Government funds cover construction. residents provide minor materials. Closets block flies mosquitoes and rats to cut epidemic risk.
National champions from 4-H were honored at a 1 200 delegate banquet in Chicago on December 5. Hugo Graumann led with leadership honors, Doris Clark earned the travel prize, Hulda Stetler won home economics, Warner Churchill earned corn and Elena Shoup topped canning. Health champions Glen Sherwood, Crista Millspaugh, and 950 000 4-H youths nationally share the spotlight.
Grand jurors from Anson, Stamford, Hamlin, Merkel, Avoca and surrounding towns named for January term. Petit jurors listed for first through fourth weeks include residents of Hamlin, Stamford, Anson, Lueders, Merkel, Avoca, Hawley, Tuxedo, and other local communities.
R L Pinson 58 of Sagerton lost sight in his left eye when struck by a nail while building a house on the Ward Ranch 18 miles northwest of Swenson. He was treated at Hamlin before being moved to the Sanatorium, eye sight considered hopeless.

Stamford firemen responded to two alarms on Christmas Day within an hour. The first fire, in a Negro shack behind the planing mill on West McHarg Street, started in the flue and caused little damage. The second blaze in Bomar Heights gutted a residence before discovery, with origin undetermined.
Gordon Haynes received a flesh wound of the left foot Wednesday at 3 45 p m when a gun discharged in the hands of F W Peckham during quail hunting fifteen miles northwest of Stamford. He was rushed to the hospital by the hunting party. The shot tore part of his shoe and pierced the flesh but did not injure the bone. doctors expect no serious injury.
Watch services will be held at the First Baptist Church Sunday night with preaching at the usual time followed by a varied program until 12 o'clock. A baptimal service will conclude. Morning Bible class on Exodus suspended for New Year service. BYP U meets at 6 pm. A Christmas service was held last Sunday. no evening service then. A divorce case was advised by Magistrate Cairns to speak with the minister.
An icy wind swept Stamford and vicinity after an unusually mild Christmas. A cold wave pushed readings to freezing by Tuesday dawn. Wednesday began cloudy and cooler with 20 degrees. Christmas day saw a gentle rise and coats discarded by afternoon.
The funeral of Mrs Mittie Brigham a Jones county pioneer aged 73 was at New Hope Baptist Church Saturday at 4 p m Rev J W Wright of Stam ford presiding Arrangements by W N Kinney Burial at New Hope Cemetery She died at home ten miles south of Stamford Friday at 6 a m from a heart attack Born Mittie Poston May 15 1860 in Marshall Miss She married W L Brigham in Washington D C in 1895 and moved to Jones county Survivors include her husband a brother Henry Poston of Divide Colorado six stepdaughters and two stepsons with addresses listed.
W M Phillips of Rule, 33, sustained severe burns to hands face and back when his home three miles east of Rule burned late Sunday. He escaped with smoke inhalation but is not believed to be seriously injured. The fire, started by mice chewing matches in the attic, consumed the house after he attempted to save a stove. Phillips was treated at a neighbor’s house and later at Stamford Sanitarium.
Rotarians shared memories of past Christmas experiences at the regular Tuesday luncheon. Speakers described a range of emotions from sadness to humor as T. A. Upshaw presided and R. B. Bryant led the fellowship program. Afterward several members visited R. E. McDonald recovering from a leg infection.
A Wednesday morning fire at the old Berthelot home corner Davenport and Anson caused minimal damage. Fire chief suspects rags around the flue as the cause. alarm reported about 10 a.m. Loss estimated at 150 dollars.
The Jones County Welfare and Employment Board asks unemployed residents to apply at the Stamford office for help finding part or full time work. The board maintains an index of Stamford’s unemployed and can arrange quick employment for a day or two, supplementing CWA projects where needed.
Lonnie Tucker age 19 of Anson died at Stamford San Itarium at 12:20 AM after coal oil flammable liquid ignited on a stove and exploded. Brothers Elmer and John aided, while Tucker’s wife and two siblings were injured in efforts to remove his burning clothing. Survived by wife, daughter, four brothers, two sisters, and father T. C. Tucker.
Mrs Cyn tha Elizabeth Eubanks 72 mother of Mrs M L Lawson died Saturday morning at her son W L Eubanks Spur home from pneumonia. Funeral conducted by W H Wrye Sunday at 4 p.m. Church of Christ. Burial in Highland Cemetery. Arrangements by W N Kinney Funeral Home. Survived by six daughters A Stocks Dallas C C Brown Abilene Lillian Barton Wichita Falls Barton Lawyer Cleo Eubanks California and three sons Troy Amarillo E F Wichita Falls Roscoe Crowell. All children except Cleo attended.
Willie Russell and Leon Hills were jailed in Jones County on forgery charges for passing a $12 check at City Service gasoline station on North Swenson Street under the name Jesse McAlester. Banks alerted authorities Tuesday, and the pair were captured in Abilene Tuesday night then returned to Jones County for trial.
The American Legion entertained between 100 and 150 children at a Christmas tree event in the Legion Hall last Friday night. Mrs. Annie L. Dial’s kindergarten class opened the program with a Christmas number followed by Betty Murphy’s readings and a reading and dancing by Patsy Goff. Toys, candy, nuts, and a free Palace Theatre showing were provided to the children.
