Stamford merchants report booming business through the holiday season with higher gifts and a strong cotton harvest boosting spending in Jones County. Churches plan Christmas programs and services, with many holding events Wednesday night, Christmas morning services, and some midnight Christmas Eve rites.
Twelve members of the Stamford National Guard will be called for basic training in coming months as part of a nationwide program. From the First Battalion 1351st Artillery based in Abilene, about 75 men will be affected with others from Stamford Snyder and surrounding towns. The first two recruits, Sergeant Leroy Strickland said, will depart January 4 for Fort Bliss in El Paso.
Jones County Commissioners Court will open bids January 9 for furnishing and installing storm windows in the county courthouse. The project covers 100 windows of varying sizes and includes sand blasting, masonry repair, and waterproofing as part of a broader exterior improvement plan. Work should begin shortly after the holidays.
Ten men elected to Jones County government will take the oath January 3 in a session led by County Judge Leon Thurman. L. R. Winkels Jr. replaces Temp White as county treasurer, with others beginning new terms including commissioners Tom Boyd and J E Touchstone, County Clerk Roy Thorn, District Clerk W L McDonald, School Superintendent Everett Beaver, and justices Albert Story and John Barnett.
M. L. Tex Rogers resigns as associate publisher and advertising manager of the Stamford American to take the advertising manager post at the Lamb County Leader in Littlefield. He served since Sept 1965 and worked previously at Port Lavaca Wave Plainview Daily Herald and Avalanche Journal in Lubbock.
Jones County Sheriff Dave Reyes gains permission from the commissioners court to hire an additional full time deputy, raising the total to three. The sheriff may also employ a woman deputy as needed. Deputy Raymond Spraberry resigned months ago and Burl Walker becomes full time. other deputies are Raymond Spraberry and Frank Wilson. Arden Beasley remains jailer.
Farmers in Jones County Texas and across the nation voted yes to a one dollar per base checkoff for cotton research and promotion in a December referendum. Jones County yielded 709 for to 349 against, Texas 55 187 for and 26 267 against, and nationwide 183 124 for and 86 373 against, with two thirds threshold largely unmet in several states. The Cotton Research and Promotion Act requires approval by two thirds of producers or two thirds of cotton represented. The order awaits final official tabulation, expected in about two weeks, before implementation by a Cotton Board appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture.
Needy Stamford families will receive Christmas aid from the local Goodfellows despite a short fund. The drive reached 640 of an 800 goal with donations of toys clothing and food offsetting the shortfall. 55 requests were screened by a committee as Lions Club volunteers and Central Presbyterian Church youth assist with delivery Saturday morning.
Stamford police contended with a two week surge of juvenile burglaries. Two 12 and 14 year olds broke into Motor Parts Co. and Buie's on multiple occasions, with cash missing from a register. Two 14 year olds were nabbed after a PBO Koepp Gulf Service break in. One teen, an escapee, linked to a car theft in Abilene. 17 year old Jimmy Lee Hammond held on a $1000 bond for a $92 check forgery and related arrest factors.
The James H. West home near the country club captured first prize in Stamford Garden Club’s Christmas decorating contest. Judges announced Friday night and awarded second to Mr. and Mrs. Ira Carter on Compton Street and third to J. W. Frizell Jr. on Wells Street.
A two year report ending Aug 31 1966 shows fewer felony indictments and convictions than the prior period in the 104th District Court. Burglary leads indictments, DWI causes most fines, prison terms total 238 years across various felonies, with notable community support cited.
Monday December 26 will be a chamber of commerce holiday in Stamford. Most businesses will be closed, according to chamber manager Jerry Hopkins.
Funeral services for Char lie Vasek 84 a 60 year Jones County resident were held Monday at St Anns Catholic Church conducted by Rev William Cadigan burial followed at Highland Memorial Cemetery Kinney Funeral Home in charge Vasek died Saturday at Stamford Memorial Hospital after a five month illness He was born October 12 1882 in Lavaca County Texas and married Janie Sharmek November 21 1905 They moved to Jones County in 1906 Survivors include his wife four sons Frank Stamford Jim Lubbock August Anson and Joe Littlefield a daughter Mrs Walter Nienest Lubbock 13 grand children nine great grand children and three sisters
Stamford firemen fought four grass fires in and around the city on Tuesday with a fifth flare up planned for Tuesday night in a car on the square. A first blaze started at 2 20 p m on East Rotan Street block 19. Ten minutes later a fire along the railroad right of way east of Stamford. At 3 45 p m another blaze northeast of Stamford in the Ward community. At 4 10 p m a fire northeast of town on the Jim West place. An auto fire at 11 25 p m involved a car in front of the Stamford American office.
J. I. Thompson of Fort Worth was sentenced to three months in jail after pleading guilty in 10th District Court in Anson to assault with a prohibited weapon stemming from the Aug. 20 shooting of Lonie Williams of Abilene.
Floyd Clifton president of Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Hamlin announced a $25,000 remodeling project. The work is expected to begin mid January and will modernize the building for improved service.
