Cotton harvest near finish with 900 bales left

Cotton harvest nearing completion with about 900 bales remaining and wrap up expected by Christmas as six area gins report. Most gins show 400 bales still to process and area fields average over a bale per acre with some two bales per acre.

Stamford High School band members were named to the All District after a judging in Abilene. They advance to the All Regional in Big Spring on January 7. Goodfellows Treasury Grows With Toys Money and Clothing

Stamford residents bolster the Goodfellows drive as the treasury reaches 519 this week with additional clothing and toys. A screening committee will review 43 assistance letters this weekend while volunteers sort donations at the Swenson building. Contributions come from St. John's Methodist Church members and local groups, with gifts totaling dozens of dollars from individuals and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Jaycee Ettes Officers Installed in Stamford Banquet

Stamford Jayceeettes held an installation banquet on December 5 at the Cliff House with Pat Eisenbach named president. Anita Elms installed other officers including Why nama Rose as secretary-treasurer and Shirley Reed as state director. Attendees were from Stamford Hamlin and Odessa. Charles Brownfield Jr. served as master of ceremonies.

Guilty Plea Brings Four Month County Jail Term

Cleo Morrison pleaded guilty to a second offense driving while intoxicated. District Judge Owen Thomas sentenced him to four months in the county jail and gave credit for 1090 days already served.

California Creek SCS District Announces Essay Contest

The California Creek Soil and Water Conservation District invites high school students to enter the annual conservation essay contest with the theme Preserve Our Natural Resources. Local prizes range from 25 to 5 dollars, and 50 state awards include trophies and medals. entries go to the Ft Worth Press for state competition, with a January 9, 1967 deadline.

Court Holds No Victor in Hawley JP Race

Hawley voters produced no majority winner in the justice of the peace race as write ins Lee May Roger Bowen J L Laird and others competed against incumbent Walter Wood. Hawley court ordered County Judge Thurman to declare a victor if a majority appeared with no winner found.

Stamford City Council rejects highway by pass plan

In a special session last Friday Stamford Texas council voted against asking Jones County Commissioners to pursue a bypass around Stamford. The move, urged by Chamber of Commerce members and businessmen, followed Texas Highway Department interest and three proposed routes west of Stamford. Mayor H G Andrews Jr said passage would let the city have input on location and entrances, while Alderman E B Harkins moved to oppose the bypass and was seconded by Alderman John Blackstock, who joined in the dissent.

Bulldogs Host Eight-Team Stamford Invitational This Weekend

Stamford welcomes eight teams including Avoca Colorado City Vernon Winters Sweetwater Weinert and Stamford B in a two day basketball tournament. Openers feature Colorado City vs Winters at 5 20 p m and Sweetwater vs Avoca at 6 40 p m. Bulldogs face Weinert at 8 p m with Stamford B awaiting the consolation winner Friday.

County 4 H FFA Stock Show Held in Anson Jan 21

The Jones County 4 H and FFA livestock show is set for Saturday January 21 in Anson. Entry deadline is January 7 with rules and forms distributed to members. Animals must be owned by exhibitors by December 1 1966 to compete. Entry fees vary by species.

Cotton Referendum Ballots Tabulated In Anson

Jones County ASCS committee met in Anson with office staff to tabulate cotton referendum votes. Final results were to be sent to the state office for statewide tabulation and then to Washington by 4 p.m. Wednesday, with no final results expected until later in the week. Voters decided on 1967 marketing quotas and a possible $1 per sale assessment for research and promotion.

The Stamford Bulldogs face a demanding 1967 schedule with six road games including four consecutive away tilts. Graham returns as a new foe in District 4AAA along with Brownwood Vernon Breckenridge and Wichita Falls Hirschi. Non district games include Quanah Snyder Seymour and Coleman with dates listed. H. H. Corley Dies In Anson Rites Conducted Here

Hardy H. Corley 72 long time Stamford businessman died at Anson General Hospital. Services were held at Orient Street Church of Christ with Silas Triplett and Dale Foster officiating. Burial in Bethel Cemetery. Survivors include wife Ethel and four grandchildren.

Christmas Lighting Contest Judging Set for Friday Night

Stamford Garden Club prepares for its Christmas lighting contest with judges arriving Friday night between 6 and 10 o clock. Thirty responses have been received to date, with out of town judges to follow National Council of State Garden Clubs rules. Lights in doorways windows and yards create a festive display as residents decorate to celebrate the season.

Exchange Student to Call Home as Christmas Gift

Ulrika Lonnqvist the exchange student at Stamford High School will be allowed to call her parents in Finland as a Christmas gift. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Erick Lonnqvist of Helsingfors and is staying with Dr Ike Hudsons during her visit sponsored by Stamford Rotary Club members.
