Christmas Music Brightens Stamford Holiday Season

Stamford shows festive Christmas spirit with church services filled to capacity. St John’s Methodist and First Baptist drew large crowds for carols and anthems as three choirs performed on December 10 and 17. The Stamford Music Club held a sacred concert at Central Christian Church with Christmas carols. Extra chairs, holiday decorations, and daily carol performances on the 5:30 whistle lightened spirits. 1st Lieut. and Mrs. Pinett and children from Tucson plan a weeklong visit starting Saturday.

Neighbors Help Fight Fire At S J Hodge Home Friday

Friday about 6 30 p m neighbors rushed to aid when a central heating fan malfunction caused smoke. Sandy Hodge turned in the alarm across the street while Bully Gilstrap and others helped bring water. The home suffered smoke damage as residents were away in Abilene.

JCCW Presents Christmas Carols By Radio Saturday

A portion of the cantata Carols of Christmas will be broadcast Saturday at 9:45 a.m. over KDWT. The program is sponsored by the United Council of Church Women and draws from a Stamford Music club recording made last Sunday. Mrs. George Hubbard has returned to work at Stamford Cleaners after surgery. Mr. and Mrs. J.T West will share Christmas dinner in Abilene with Mrs. Georgia Frazier on Monday.

Hicks family to spend holidays in Houston

Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Hicks will depart Friday for Houston for the holidays. Accompanying them will be their daughter, Jane.

One Killed Three Injured in Early Morning Head-On Collision

A head-on crash in the city left one person dead and three others injured in the early hours. Local responders tied the crash to slick roads and high speed, with investigators collecting evidence at the scene.

Final Rites Held for James L. Johnson in Stamford

Relatives and friends gathered at the First Baptist Church Sunday afternoon for the funeral of James Lee Johnson 60 a Stamford police veteran and former assistant chief who died Friday at Stamford Sanitarium. Burial followed at Highland cemetery with Kinney Funeral Home in charge. Johnson influential in Stamford law enforcement for 17 years and later worked as finger print man and night desk sergeant. He and wife Mollie D. Stone moved from Van Horn 35 years ago. He was born September 22 1890 in Frozy Texas. Survivors include wife son Adron Johnson Stamford daughter Mrs George Stein Corpus Christi two grandsons sister Mrs Tom Potter San Francisco and brothers S B A B Johnson Los Angeles Floyd F Johnson Las Vegas NV. Pallbearers named.

Melillo Family Travels to Somerville for Ill Mother

Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Melillo of Lamesa traveled to Somerville, Massachusetts due to the illness of Mr. Melillo's mother. They stopped first to visit Mrs. Melillo's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Hubbard, and she is the former Georgia Sue Hubbard.

Landmark Home Torn Down in Stamford

One of Stamford’s first homes, the 1900 era Penick residence, was razed this week at Hamilton and Ferguson streets now the site of McClendon’s service station. Despite demolition the lumber remains, slated for use in a new house.

Mrs. Eloise Mays Tiberghien 20, of Anson, died after a head on collision in Stamford at 1 15 a m Thursday. Her husband Robert 21 and brother in law Ray 23 were in the 1950 Nash with her. J L Johnson 37 of Spur drove the 1949 Ford. Mrs Tiberghien born December 20 1930 in Anson was returning from a birthday party with plans to lead the Grand March at the Cowboys Christmas Ball in Anson Saturday night. Funeral arrangements pending.

Edward B Harrison 88 prominent Jones county land owner died in Houston Sunday at his daughter Mrs Mary Kate Kennedy home. Funeral at Central Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev J A Owen with Kinney Funeral Home in charge. Burial in Highland Cemetery. Survived by daughter Mrs Kennedy son W B Harrison five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Pallbearers listed. Harrison had lived in Jones county since 1908 and earlier farmed near Hutto with his brother.

Naval airman Julian Elliott on 10 day Christmas leave

Julian Elliott of the Naval Air Force is home on a 10 day leave from San Diego Naval Air Station. He visits his wife Sandra and daughter with his parents Mr and Mrs M E Elliott and other relatives. Filiett, in the Naval Reserve, is back in service since October 21 and trains with an anti submarine patrol squadron.

WTUC Christmas Party Draws 98 District Workers

About 98 employees from all towns in West Texas Utilities Company District C attended the Stamford Country Club event on December 14. The day included a fourth quarterly safety meeting and a general business session at the district office, followed by a banquet and dance. Service emblems honored staff from five to 40 years, with repeat recognition for several employees.
