Stamford United Way near goal short by about 2000

The Stamford United Way reports about 12 200 collected toward a 14 275 goal leaving a shortfall near 2000. Drive chairman Danny Blain and President Gary Mathews urge workers to turn in remaining pledge cards to support 15 agencies including two new ones. Carryover funds from last year are insufficient to cover the gap.

Short of Funds for Stamford Goodfellows Christmas Drive

With five days to go before Christmas Stamford Goodfellows report only 185 dollars collected this week leaving the drive well short of the 550 dollars needed to supply food and toys. Officials say higher costs this year and carryover from last year widen the gap.

Shade tree care meeting announced for Friday

A pruning and care session for shade trees will be held at 9am in the Jones County Extension Agent office. Friday, Dec 21. County Agent Kirby Clayton announced the talk covering pruning fertilizing and general management of shade trees in the West Texas area.

Stamford Hospital District Expansion Approved in Special Election

The Stamford Hamlin and Anson areas voting in a special election approved expanding the Stamford Hospital District by a large margin 716 for 479 against with property owners voting 707 to 473 and non owners 9 for 6 against. Officials plan to meet Thursday at 10 to canvass results amid opposition from Leeders area residents and Fort Phantom Hill county groups.

Stamford School Board Acts On Energy Use And Staffing

The Stamford school board, in a regular meeting last Thursday, approved cooperation with energy programs while denying shorter school days for Stamford students. Superintendent Woodie Beene says only two buildings, including the auditorium, would follow the 68 degree thermostat guideline. The district plans light and heat reductions in unused rooms and possible travel curtailments next spring. Resignations were accepted for assistant coach Jerry Speck effective January and for staff across Tri County Educational Cooperative. Replacements were named in Hamlin and Stamford. The board also approved another $1000 delinquent tax time warrant, leaving $55,000 unpaid.

Twelve Children Receive Shots at Immunization Clinic

Officials report 12 youngsters were given shots at the monthly immunization clinic held Tuesday. They note fewer attendees before the holidays and remind parents the clinic runs on the third Tuesday each month, with the next session on January 15 at the Community Kindergarten.

Auction Planned for Stamford Inn 66-Room Hotel

Teakwood Manor Inc Mascot plans to auction the Stamford Inn at 207 E McHarg with a 10 30 a m Saturday start. The site will sell the 66 room hotel furnishings and the building, including lobby bedrooms and basement. The auctioneer is Col Tex Herring of Lawn.

Lueders Avoca Sets Kindergarten Start Date

Kindergarten classes in the Lueders Avoca district begin January 7 at Lueders Avoca Elementary. eligibility is for five year olds on or before Sept 1, 1973. Stamford girls finish second after defeating Rotan and Merkel then losing 44-42 to Jim Ned. Vivian Dillard scores 21 with Amy Petty 17. Dillard leads 25-24 Merkel win with 14, adds eight in final 47-21 loss. Stamford boys beat Rotan 55-36, then fall 71-52 to Coleman as Pat Gillespie tops with 13.
