Cotton gins across the area hummed with 1 675 bales ginned in the past week, bringing seasonal total to 6 409 by 4 p.m. Wednesday as high winds forced temporary shutdowns. Over 200 trailers held two to four bales awaiting processing, while fires broke out at Douthit and Avoca gins and a trailer fire near Stamford.
Jones and Haskell counties backed continuing marketing quotas with 335 of 2000 voters in Jones and 484 ballots in Haskell, 458 in favor. Statewide tally: 36 943 for and 6 672 against. Jones ISC reports a 1.7 percent cut in county allotments. Registration opens mid January for Soil Bank one year and for five year Conservation Reserve program before April 15.
Drilling began Friday on the first oil test within Stamford city limits by Sojourner Drilling Co and George B. Rice and James H. Rice at No. 1 Neema Berry. City council granted permit December 2, location moved north near M. A. Grantham property on the north outskirts. Test operates as a tight hole with expected drilling below 200 feet of a 3900 foot depth.
Mrs. Chester Yeatts underwent major surgery at Stamford Sanitarium Monday morning and is reported to be improving.
New Phillips 66 station operated by Jess Berry opens on the Anson highway in a former location. The modern facility features wide driveways, full wash and lubrication services, and Phillips 66 products. A Saturday opening offers nylon hose gifts to customers who fill their tanks.
A 90 minute color film depicting the activities of revivalist Oral Roberts will be shown at the Four Square Church on December 19 at 7 30 o clock. Roberts has preached in the Holy Land Australia the United States and other regions. The picture features the largest revival tent seating 12 000.
Bill M. Collins of the Texas State Parks Board says picnic and camping shelters will be the initial improvements at Lake Stamford State Park. The first allotment is 2400 dollars, enough to build six 12 by 18 foot shelters. The plan includes a concrete floor and roof with concrete tables and benches.
Rotary club members plan an old fashioned spelling bee on Tuesday with Dick Rowland as judge. Participants who misspell or fail to spell well may be asked to donate to the club’s Christmas fund aiding needy families.
More than 1050 attended the annual Jones County Baptist Associational Training Union night at First Baptist Church Stamford with 1035 officially registered. Wayne Oglesby and Mary Ellen Osment served as prince and princess as churches presented posters detailing attendance goals. Dr. Sterling Price urged attendees not to sell out their faith.
Lee Walker of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce asks residents to report children at risk of missing gifts. About 150 repaired toys, including dolls and carriages, will be distributed to homes. call the chamber with name, age, and address. The Goodwill committee plans Christmas fruits and treats for Washington and Bomar Heights schools on December 20.
W. T. Stovall has been appointed as the new director of the Samford Chamber of Commerce and his appointment has been approved by the City Council. He succeeds Rey McAnear who has moved to El Dorado Arkansas.
Stamford Garden Club and the Chamber of Commerce will jointly sponsor a lighting and decoration contest this year. Details to be finalized at the Garden Club meeting Thursday afternoon. Three prizes are planned with no separate divisions. Mrs. Grady Bowdry will chair the effort with both organizations.
The Stamford post office will reopen Saturday afternoons from now until Christmas. It will open at 6:30 in the morning and remain open until 5 o'clock, maintaining regular weekday hours. Christmas mailing is running about as in past years, says Postmaster Johnny Britton.
The Youth Center in Doyhouse postponed the planned Drive for Furs due to late harvests. A special gifts campaign will proceed with mailed appeals to past contributors. The Youth Center Council met at President Jimmy West’s office to plan a Brownie movie projector and a film unit giveaway at the center before Christmas.
Mr and Mrs Dick Carson and their son Richard host an open house at their new residence on New Hope road this Sunday from 2 to 4 pm. They invite friends interested in viewing the home to call on Sunday.
Beulah Mae Summers of Lagerton won the capital prize of 1000 in The Stamford American subscription contest held through Tuesday morning. Loree Ferrell closely trailed, with Ray Scurlock earning second or third prize and Lilian Chandler and W. Bailiff in the top five. All nonwinners received 25 percent commissions. the campaign boosted total circulation by more than one third with coverage from Aspermont to Rochester.
The judges appointed by contestants certify a true vote count for the Stamford American Subscription Campaign. The group recounts confirm totals for each contestant and name prize winners with listed vote totals. Signed by multiple judges in Stamford Texas dated December 16, 1997.
Patients at the Stamford Sanitarium will receive three copies of The American each week for five weeks, thanks to donations from multiple local sponsors.
