Gins In Area See Cotton Ginned and Fire Hazards

Cotton gins across the area hummed with 1 675 bales ginned in the past week, bringing seasonal total to 6 409 by 4 p.m. Wednesday as high winds forced temporary shutdowns. Over 200 trailers held two to four bales awaiting processing, while fires broke out at Douthit and Avoca gins and a trailer fire near Stamford.

County and State Vote to Maintain Cotton Quotas for Year

Jones and Haskell counties backed continuing marketing quotas with 335 of 2000 voters in Jones and 484 ballots in Haskell, 458 in favor. Statewide tally: 36 943 for and 6 672 against. Jones ISC reports a 1.7 percent cut in county allotments. Registration opens mid January for Soil Bank one year and for five year Conservation Reserve program before April 15.

Oil Test North Of Town Near 2090 Feet

Drilling began Friday on the first oil test within Stamford city limits by Sojourner Drilling Co and George B. Rice and James H. Rice at No. 1 Neema Berry. City council granted permit December 2, location moved north near M. A. Grantham property on the north outskirts. Test operates as a tight hole with expected drilling below 200 feet of a 3900 foot depth.

Phillips 66 Station Opens With Guest Gifts and Modern Service

New Phillips 66 station operated by Jess Berry opens on the Anson highway in a former location. The modern facility features wide driveways, full wash and lubrication services, and Phillips 66 products. A Saturday opening offers nylon hose gifts to customers who fill their tanks.

Movie on Oral Roberts to be shown at Four Square Church

A 90 minute color film depicting the activities of revivalist Oral Roberts will be shown at the Four Square Church on December 19 at 7 30 o clock. Roberts has preached in the Holy Land Australia the United States and other regions. The picture features the largest revival tent seating 12 000.

Picnic Shelters Likely To Be first Improvements at New State Park

Bill M. Collins of the Texas State Parks Board says picnic and camping shelters will be the initial improvements at Lake Stamford State Park. The first allotment is 2400 dollars, enough to build six 12 by 18 foot shelters. The plan includes a concrete floor and roof with concrete tables and benches.

Rotarians Hold Christmas Spelling Bee For Charity

Rotary club members plan an old fashioned spelling bee on Tuesday with Dick Rowland as judge. Participants who misspell or fail to spell well may be asked to donate to the club’s Christmas fund aiding needy families.

More than 1050 attended the annual Jones County Baptist Associational Training Union night at First Baptist Church Stamford with 1035 officially registered. Decoration Contest Planned by Garden Club and Chamber

Stamford Garden Club and the Chamber of Commerce will jointly sponsor a lighting and decoration contest this year. Details to be finalized at the Garden Club meeting Thursday afternoon. Post Office to Re Open Stamford Saturday Afternoons

The Stamford post office will reopen Saturday afternoons from now until Christmas. It will open at 6:30 in the morning and remain open until 5 o'clock, maintaining regular weekday hours. Christmas mailing is running about as in past years, says Postmaster Johnny Britton.

Special Gifts Drive For Youth Center Slated

The Youth Center in Doyhouse postponed the planned Drive for Furs due to late harvests. A special gifts campaign will proceed with mailed appeals to past contributors. The Youth Center Council met at President Jimmy West’s office to plan a Brownie movie projector and a film unit giveaway at the center before Christmas.

Beulah Mae Summers of Lagerton won the capital prize of 1000 in The Stamford American subscription contest held through Tuesday morning. Loree Ferrell closely trailed, with Ray Scurlock earning second or third prize and Lilian Chandler and W. Bailiff in the top five. All nonwinners received 25 percent commissions. the campaign boosted total circulation by more than one third with coverage from Aspermont to Rochester.
