Cotton Referendum Set For Tuesday Across Two Texas Counties

In Jones and Haskell counties the cotton referendum will open at 8 am and close at 7 pm with polling sites listed across Anson, Stamford, Hamlin, Bricksdahl, Felts, Lueders, Hodges, Noodle, O’Brien, Sagerton, Rule, Mattson, Weinert, and He wells. Acreage allotments remain in force for price support and marketing, and Dec 10 referendums will decide upland and extra long staple quotas if votes pass thresholds.

4 H and FFA Stock Show Set January 11 at Anson

The annual Jones County 4H Club and FFA Livestock Show will be held January 11 at Anson High School. Sponsored by Anson Hamlin and Stamford Chambers, the event expects 38 entries with premium and expenses around 1260 dollars.

Death of Mrs. John J. Baldwin 94 Highlighted by Faith and Family

Mrs. Nancy Laura Galbraith Baldwin of Stamford born 1863 in Honey Grove died at 2 a.m. Thursday after a long illness. Funeral held at Central Christian Church with Rev. James Smith officiating and Mayes choir, followed by burial in Honey Grove. Survived by husband John J. Baldwin, children Blanche Baldwin, Nadie Baldwin, Van Baldwin, and Marshall Baldwin, plus two granddaughters and three great grandchildren. sister Mrs. S W Mantius also surviving. Mackenzie Trail Marker Planned North of Stamford

A marker for the Old Mackenzie Trail will be erected in the park north of Stamford at the intersection of Highways 277 and 360. Funds will be raised by public subscription. The Mackenzie Trail Memorial Association, with Bernard Buie of Stamford, works with the Texas Highway Department and historical groups.

Jaycees To Sell Light Bulbs In Weekend Sale

Principal calls PTA to join in home background for child

Stamford High school principal J W Simpson addressed the Oliver Street PTA, urging that a democratic home fosters better citizens. He noted schools can improve only with proper home background and emphasized parental partnership. The program featured a Christmas pageant and a report on the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers. The next meeting is set for January first Tuesday.

325 Trailers Await Turn at Stamford

Stamford gins are running at near peak capacity with 4734 bales ginned by 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and 325 full trailers in yards. Farmers Cooperative Gin and Doubit Gin operate 24 hours, Alexander gin closes about 1 a.m. Cotton is gathered by hand and strippers as weather cooperates. The early frost has mixed grades, some stained or fuzzy, but overall quality is better than expected and 35 to 40 percent of the harvest is complete.

The Luther League at St Pauls Lutheran Church Lagerton changes its meeting to 6:30 PM on Sunday December 8 because church services start at 1:30 PM. Local church notices state the new time to accommodate the service schedule.

Kansas Native Will Succeed McAnear Here

L. M. Barnett of Chanute Kansas will become the new district superintendent in Stamford replacing H R McAnear who has led six and a half years and moves to El Dorado Arkansas. Barnett native of Hewins Kansas has been with Service Pipe Line Co since 1925 rising from laborer to chief station engineer at several plants including Humboldt Medicine Row Rawlins Carrollton and Humboldt again before a 1960 promotion to district superintendent.

Bosses Banquet Set Thursday by BARPW Club

Stamford's Business and Professional Women Club will host its December banquet Thursday at the Stamford Cafeteria. About 75 attendees are expected. Rev. Jerry Boles of Central Presbyterian Church will speak. Rev. James Smith of Central Christian Church will give the invocation. Rev. Jack Southerland of the First Baptist Church will deliver the benediction. Mrs. Dudley Duncan presides with Mrs. Fannie Meeker coordinating the program and committee chairs assisting. Jack Southerland will sing a scale with piano accompaniment by Mrs. C M Laster.

Church Women Plan County Fair at Central Christian

The Central Christian Church hosts a County Fair this Friday December 6 from 6 p.m. at the church. Sponsored by the Christian Women's Fellowship led by Mrs. Bob Craig, the event offers hamburgers chips pie and coffee for 50 cents. A bazaar with decorations gifts and canned goods for sale will also be featured.
