Stamford retailers keep doors open nightly until 8 pm through Christmas per the Retail Merchants Committee of the Chamber of Commerce. Stock ranges from toys and clothing to jewelry, radios, home furnishings, and lingerie with notable discounts on suits and coats.
A basic Scoutmaster training course is conducted in Stamford for Boy Scout leaders from Haskell and Jane counties by the Chisholm Treit Council. The course wraps December 27 with a cooking and Scout skills session at Can Tonkawa, led by Co-Chairmen Eastland and Overton, with Date Henely as adviser. Participants include Scouts from Stamford Paint Creek O'Brien Avoca Lue Cors and Han hin, led by local executives and volunteers.
City officials warn that shooting fireworks on public property within city limits will bring fines. Chief of Police Flournoy Corporation Judge Willoughby and May or A C Humphrey stressed that fireworks danger cannot be ignored and penalties will be applied.
Stamford residents eagerly await the Apollo Boys Choir concert at John’s Methodist Church Tuesday at 8 p.m. The event opens the Stamford Civic Music Association’s current season and marks a highlight of the Christmas season.
At the annual Business and Professional Women's Club banquet in Stamford, Omar Burleson urged realism about the Marshall Plan and Europe’s recovery. He described conditions in England France Greece and Germany, stressing the need for U S support while noting Europe’s economic and political fragility.
Jaycee luncheon honored first and second prize winners O A Finney and Charlie Strauss who presented $25 and $15 checks back to the club for Christmas baskets. Third place winner Marvin Hinds was absent. Ted Myers led the meeting. A report on painting trash cans was given by Jack Griffin with thanks to volunteers. The club reminded members of the December 18 dance with advance tickets at Nat's Cafe.
Chief Rowland and fellow instructors traveled to Texas A and M College for the annual Instructors Conference. The event included classroom work and outdoor drill tower training for departments and state firemen’s training, with activities conducted December 6.
Three Stamford Garden Club members judged Anson decoration contests Monday night. Residential winners were Dr Otis Bowyer's home first Charles Robertson second and Lee Riker third. Business district winners were Poe's Sweet Shop first Womack's Florist second Cross Home and Auto store third Panhandle Abstract fourth Neville Barrett's fifth and Reliable Dry Goods and Auto Supply sixth.
Fire Chief Dick Rowland urges careful inspection of electrical decorations and toys, recommends fire resistant decorations, and warns against cotton or paper on trees. He notes inspectors will check public assembly sites and stresses year round fire safety during the season.
Stamford churches plan Christmas programs and sermons this week. Central Presbyterian hosts Stamford Music Club concerts at 7 and 8 pm, while St John’s Methodist features Rev Marshall Rhew with multiple choirs and a Monday Christmas tree for children and the needy. First Baptist presents cantata based music and a sermon by Rev Miles B Hays. East McHarg Avenue Baptist and Swenson Avenue Baptist organize Christmas tree events and gifts. Central Christian marks White Christmas with Juliette Fowler Home gifts. Central Presbyterian and Parish choir plans include carols and organ pieces. Santa will distribute treats at the Presbyterian tree event.
Congressman Omar Burleson told Rotary and Exchange club members the new Congress faces a major clash over spending. He cited 80 percent of outlays for past or planned wars, veterans benefits, and the Marshall Plan, and warned about scrutiny of Labor, Customs, and Interior budgets amid broader questions about American commitment abroad. An open forum followed his remarks.
W J Lee manager of J C Penney Company is nominated for the Stamford Exchange club presidency for the coming six months starting January 1. Officers will be elected December 7 at the club meeting. Also named are Ryland Gleaton and Jack Fuqua as first and second vice presidents respectively with W C Lanvitt and Harry Lavender added to the board of control. Retiring president David Ratliff will join the board after stepping down.
The Baptist Church in Lagerton announced a Sunday sermon titled The Second Coming of Christ to be delivered on December 19. The notice names Lagerton church as the venue and references the upcoming service.
A C Vahlenkamp died at 2:10 am Wednesday after a stroke at his Old Glory home. He was 53, born December 20, 1897, in LaGrange. Funeral Thursday at St Pauls Lutheran Lagerton. burial in Old Brandenberg cemetery. Survived by wife Minnie Teichelman, three sons Herbert Eugene Virgil, three daughters Anita Baldree Verline and Betty Jane, two grandchildren, father John Vahlenkamp, and four brothers Willie and others. Pallbearers listed.
Roger Babson, noted for business statistics, is previewing his 1949 outlook in a December issue. His 1948 forecast score reached 91 percent correct, including predictions on the absence of a World War II in 1948 and trends in Truman’s reelection chances and the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
