Victorious Bulldogs Face Comanche For Region Flag In Stamford

Stamford and Comanche meet in Stamford Friday night December 19 at 730 to decide the region flag. The game, postponed from December 12, will close the Bulldogs season. Defense Bonds Committee to Hold Meeting

The county committee overseeing Defense stamps and bonds will meet at the Stamford Chamber of Commerce office Monday at 7 30 p m at the call of County Chairman Charles F Mark am. Plans for steady defense stamp sales across Jones County will be set. The committee includes men from Anson Hamlin Lueders Hawley Avoca and Stamford. The County Defense Coordinating Committee also meets to discuss a county defense setup led by County Judge Gilbert Smith with Mayors Jim Arnett Anson Joe Culbertson Hamlin and C M Francis Stamford.

Music Club Candlelight Service Set for December 21

The Stamford Music Club will hold a community candlelight service at St. John's Methodist Church on Sunday December 21 at 7 p m. V D Duble president announced. The program features a Christmas theme directed by Mrs A V Kemletz and accompanist Mrs N M Phy. Happy Davenport, son of Mr and Mrs B P Davenport Jr, entered hospital Saturday for pneumonia treatment.

Four Bulldogs Named to All-District Football Team

Stamford's S J Speedy Roberts Willie Raphelt Buford Boots Rogers received all district votes. W J Todd earned a second team spot and captain Lusk was listed as a second team back. Wayland Fuqua and Kenneth Williams received honorable mention among five of seven district teams represented.

Red Cross Sewing Room Needs Volunteers in Jones County

Mrs. L M York, acting production chairman, urges volunteers for the Jones county Red Cross War Relief. The drive targets 200 toddler packs for children nine months to two years, including garments, rompers, and diapers, with 2,000 diapers already completed. Volunteers may sew at the room or take projects home, and 16 sewing machines plus cutting tables are available.

Piano program featured at Stamford Exchange Club meeting

Mary Jean Yates and Freda Culwell presented piano selections at the Exchange Club meeting held at the Stamford Inn last Friday at noon. Rev. Cal C. Wright was welcomed as the new St. John's Methodist Church pastor and new club member. Thirty six members attended. Mrs Mayme Yates Orr returned to Stamford after a stay in Dallas with her sister in law, Mrs Clarence Yates, who remains ill.

Over $2,000 Raised in R C Roll Call in Jones County

Vista Duncan roll call chairman thanks volunteers as the Jones County Red Cross surpasses last year’s totals by more than 1000 memberships with over 2000 members and about $1400 in Stamford area contributions. The report lists many individual donors and local organizations contributing to the drive.

Fire destroys Perry Bros building and six other establishments

A blaze starting in the Perry Bros store basement destroyed six businesses and three upstairs offices in a two story stone brick corner building on the square. Loss exceeds $50,000 with Perry Bros stock and building damaged. repairs and temporary reopening planned.

Cadets for Stamford Air Corps Detachment to Arrive Next Week

The Air Corps Training Detachment at Stamford Arledge field will receive a new class of 110 cadets next week from Kelly Field Replacement Center. A 53 cadet group completes 10 weeks here and will transfer to Randolph Field for basic training. A graduation dinner and ball were held last week with Joe Buzze’s orchestra at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds. The graduating class members and their hometowns span Houston and Charlotte to Gulfport and Greenville, with many N C and Miss. residents listed.

Gatewood Child Dies in Accidental Rifle Shooting

Nine year old Ida Gatewood, not eight as reported, died after her brother Tommy discharged a .22 rifle while unloading it in Ahwahnee California. The tragedy occurred while the family planned Thanksgiving plans. The child died at a local hospital after being rushed from Stam ford. Funeral held in Turlock with relatives present.

Reverend Cal C. Wright Speaks to Stamford Rotary Club

Rev. Cal C. Wright, pastor of St. John's Methodist, delivered a patriotic address to Stamford Rotary Club at noon Tuesday. He was introduced by R. B. Bryant. Rotarians were urged to fund the High School football team's Cotton Bowl trip and showed a liberal response.

Christmas Lights Extended This Year In Stamford

Christmas lights were lit in downtown Stamford for the holidays last Friday in honor of the bi district football camp. North Swensen avenue merchants donated to fund lighting equipment for 400 feet on that street bringing total lights to 1100. West Texas Utilities Company installs and powers the lights and removes them after the season. Mrs. Mizell of the Flat Top community died at Stamford Sanitarium after a stroke. funeral set for Thursday at 2 PM at Nazarene Church Hamlin with Rev Dan lb Jones, burial in Fairview cemetery Kinney Funeral Home in charge. She was born Belle Coryell Gray June 19 1883 in Coryell county and married W E Mizell in 1929.

About 125 people attended the district Harvest Day program of the Woman's Society of Christian Services at 3 o'clock on Tuesday at John’s Methodist Church. District Superintendent Sam H. Young also called a district stewards' meeting for the same time.
