Farmers in Jones County will cast ballots on Tuesday December 13 on proposed marketing quotas for the coming year. W H Cook, chairman of the local Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee, urges cotton growers to participate in the important decision.
Stamford Lions Club closes charter with 34 members led by secretary Ernest Cowger. January presentation will feature an international officer. Guests included Guy Crawford of Fort Worth Downtown Lions and Tom Wideman of Sweetwater. Wideman showed a color film on the crippled children’s camp at Kerrville funded by Texas Lions clubs. Cowger noted farmers approved quotas.
Stamford City Council sets January 6 bid opening for a new 16 inch water line from the filter plant south on Hobart to Reynolds, with 10 inch lines to Orient or Columbia streets. Estimated total cost about $50,000. Freese and Nichols serve as engineers.
The Pierian Club will host a safety program in the club room of the Carnegie Library building on Thursday night December 3 starting at 8 p m. An annual ba vaar will also be held.
A $25 reward is offered for information leading to conviction of those who shot out lights and damaged equipment at College Lake Park. Lee Walker, manager, says the Chamber of Commerce will prosecute to the full extent of the law regardless of age race or intent and asks callers to reach the office at the provided phone number.
Santa in a convertible led Stamford's Christmas parade with four decorated floats. The event featured the Stamford High School band and pep squad, new 1956 cars, and entries from local clubs and schools. Santa will host Saturday open house 1 to 6 p.m. and lights on the post office lawn added festive glow.
Stamford officials hired Wyatt C. Hedrick to survey City Hall built 1917 and the 1909 Carnegie Library for possible remodeling. Funding would likely require a bond issue. Repairs, new floors, potential upstairs council room, and window replacements are contemplated with minimal exterior work. The library houses Youth Center Pierian Club and Camp Fire Girls offices, with Carnegie Foundation origin noted.
A 1955 Ford sedan overturned after hitting a cow and calf on Texas Highway 92 near Tuxedo west of Stamford. Driver Kenneth Hobbs 15 suffered leg injuries while passenger William McIntire 17 had head lacerations and shock. Both were taken to Stamford Sanitarium.
Stamford Bulldogs stand 12-0 as they meet Breckenridge Buckaroos at Buckaroo Stadium at 2 09 pm in a state quarterfinal. Breckenridge, 10 2, won last year’s AA title and aims for another with QB Bennett Watts and strong line.
Stamford public schools will dismiss for Christmas holidays Friday afternoon December 16 and resume classes January 2 in the morning.

Delinquent personal taxpayers get 30 days more before suit. About 16 people are affected with larger than average amounts. The council also enforces permits and inspections for plumbing and gas installations. Pay raises go to staff earning under 300 a month at 10 percent and those above 300 at 5 percent, with six salaries still under 200. The new top rate for department heads is 315.
Family of Flowers widowed by fire receives community aid as two victims, Lee Flowers Jr. and 18 month old Jennie Viola, improve in Haskell hospital. Three relatives died in the blaze on November 27. Johnnie Lee survived. he stays with grandparents J L Flowers Sr. and wife. Funds gathered from Haskell, Sagerton, Stamford and area total about 1325 with contributions from churches and individuals.
Stamford official J L Blackstock has been elected vice president of the Panhandle Professional Photographers Association. He already holds other offices in similar groups.

Stamford volunteers push Camp Fire fund campaign toward completion. Treasurer Horace Arledge says about $900 is to be raised for local programs including next summer’s camp at Lueders. No salaries. all work done by volunteers under Carl Swenson and Bland Harrison.
Stamford Garden Club has postponed its pilgrimage indefinitely. Mrs. J. F. West, chairman, said the delay was required after Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Anderson withdrew their home due to the grave illness of Mrs. Anderson’s mother.
