Stamford residents may nominate the Outstanding Citizen of the Year by submitting forms printed in this week's Stamford American. Nominations are due September 8 at 5 p.m. A past-recipients committee will select final winners from submissions.
The schedule lists games for the Bulldogs across September to November with matchups against Hamlin Sweetwater Haskell Winters Anson Ballinger Colorado City Wylie Merkel and Coahoma. Games alternate between there and here venues with kickoff times of 7.30 or 8 p.m and one 7.30 p.m slot.
Stamford Mayor Gary Mathews released a statement Tuesday after Friday night the safe disposal of two hydrogen cyanide cylinders near the Jones-Haskell Coop elevators. He called the action the lesser of two evils and apologized for anxiety while noting no loss of life.
Minor damage reported at several businesses after Friday night blast at the Jones Haskell Grain Cooperative. First National Bank of Stamford and Tri County Educational Co op offices suffered windows and interior damage. Big Country Co op and JRB foodstore also reported shattered windows and torn bags. Heavy impact spread to homes including the Raymond Gomez residence. Co op manager Lynn Caton said the grain cooperative itself had no major damage but glass and debris filled surrounding areas.
The 1978 Stamford school year begins with bells at 8 30 a m and lunch from 11 40 a m to 12 20 p m. The Bulldogs travel to Hamlin for the first football game at 8 p m next week. Tickets cost 2 for adults and 1 for students. student passes are sold pregame in the principal's office or old tax office. Seven new teachers join the district including Janice Young and Cynthia Parker.
The Stamford United Way budget committee met August 22 at the Cliff House to review agency requests and local program revitalization plans. Vera Mae Mills serves as United Way president and Rev. Bill Weeks as campaign drive chairman. The kickoff lunch is scheduled for September 18 at Fuqua's Cafeteria with agencies including Stamford Baseball Program Stamford Day Care Center Mental Health and Mental Retardation Red Cross West Texas Rehabilitation Center Salvation Army Stamford Summer Recreation Program and Camp Fire Girls.
The Stamford Chamber of Commerce and Board of City Development announce their annual membership and awards banquet on September 28 at 7 p.m. in St. Ann's Parish Hall. Jerry Terrell is general chairman with other committee members to be named later. The event will honor Congressman Omar Burleson, who has served the district 32 years and retires this term. Special entertainment is planned and the Outstanding Citizen Award will be presented.
About 300 to 400 residents evacuated in Stamford after two aging hydrogen cyanide cylinders in a Jones-Haskell Grain Cooperative storage shed were prepared for controlled demolition. American Dynamid and Fort Hood bomb disposal experts coordinated a long sequence of safety checks, an on-site pit, and a timed detonation to render the hazard harmless.
