Stamford cotton seeds travel from Texas to Illinois

Mrs. Lowell Smith of Stamford gave Mrs. Jessie Blevens from Monmouth a kitchen box of cotton seeds last winter. A August 22 letter describes a Monmouth Daily Review Atlas clipping about Mrs. Blevens growing pink and white blooming cotton with pods. She transplanted seedlings three times before planting outdoors and eagerly awaits cotton blooms.

Stenholm to Receive Hightower Backing at Graham Dinner

Democratic candidate Charles Stenholm will be publicly endorsed by Congressman Hightower at a 7:30 p.m. appreciation dinner Tuesday in the Graham American Legion Building. The event, coordinated by local bankers, includes a 7 p.m. press conference and a $25 admission benefiting the Stenholm for Congress campaign.

County farms seek federal aid for $1 million damage

Farmers and ranchers in Jones County were urged to notify the Soil Conservation Service about federal funds as repairs begin after heavy rains. About 75 attended a Stamford High School meeting on August 15 to hear details. funds are not yet available but expected in 60 to 90 days. Damage includes 20 ponds, 20 miles of fence, 100 acres of waterways, and 7.5 million feet of terraces.

Clements optimistic about campaign in Texas race

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Clements spoke in Stamford on Friday and praised growing support from Democrats and independents. He criticized John Hill as a liberal Democrat tied to AFL CIO, defended Texas Right to Work, and urged a long term plan to improve education via basics, teacher merit tests, and renewed teacher-administrator dialogue. He stressed sympathy for farmers and urged open world markets to fix agricultural prices.

Hamburger fry to fete local teachers

The Stamford Chamber of Commerce will honor Stamford school teachers and welcome new staff at a hamburger dinner on Monday August 28 at 7 p.m. at the Country Club. Tickets are $2, teachers admitted free. Co chairs are W. L. Medford and Weldon Holbrooks.

Local Stamford Students Register For 1978 79 Year

Stamford junior and senior high school students must register next Wednesday August 30 from 9 to 11 a m at the high school. Seventh grade in room 10 eighth in room 1 freshman in room 11 sophomores in room 22 juniors in the study hall seniors in the auditorium. Immunization records required to register. In service for teachers begins August 28 at 8 a m.
