The weekend primary produced the largest Texas vote on record with about 850000 ballots. Jones County topped the governor race with 5015 votes, 160 more than the sheriff race in the first primary amid clashes between the Ku Klux Klan and prohibitionists shaping Ferguson era politics.
The drought ended by 1.1 inches of rain on parched land and cotton in West Texas with additional showers boosting crop prospects. A town farmer said the rain could add about ten bales of cotton, worth roughly $1500 at 30 cents a pound, to his yield.
Grasshoppers swarmed into town Sunday evening by millions covering sidewalks and streets under electric lights. Farmers report migrations in the hopper tribe with large numbers settling on green lawns and gardens, while one cotton farmer notes the pests retreat to open halls and knock cotton bolls to the ground each morning.
At 4 o clock Saturday morning the J F Hurst family were awakened by barking dogs to find their barn a Dodge Touring car and harness feed and contents burning beyond saving. Origin unknown and the loss is lamentable as no insurance was carried.
A bulletin from the Fourth Assistant Postmaster General to the American announces rural route boxes on Route 1 out of Stamford have been painted nicely in pursuance of a March 1923 department request. The Stamford mention publicizes the town to post offices and newspapers nationwide through route patrons.
Mr John A Hulen traffic manager for the Denver and Valley railroads and Receiver for the T B V visited Stamford in his private car from Houston to inspect the Valley line property. A O Maer Wichita Falls Valley superintendent accompanied him while they offered no publishable information.
G W Fry general manager led a inspection tour of the Stamford holdings with Geo J Clark and G W Schroeder from Abilene. The Stamford unit is a key element of the system and was reported 100 percent efficient. Doss Harris and a crew from Abilene enlarged feeder wires to the oil mill and brick plant to handle higher motor load as the oil mill shifts to full electric power for the season.
G L Eslinger died after a short illness at age 81 82 near Memphis Tennessee born in Tennessee he moved through Abilene Mexico West Texas Stamford and settled in this area He leaves a wife a daughter Mrs Fuqua of Stamford two sons R A of Plainview John of Canyon City Colorado and a sister Mrs Izard of Blackwell Funeral held at his daughter’s home on Webb Street with Rev A L Moore presiding and interment in Highland Cemetery The American extends condolences to the family.
J N Rhodes, 66, longtime Stamford resident, died Sunday at 2 p m after a brief illness from a stomach trouble. He was active in business, owned rental property, and was married 40 years to Bobbie Bean. Funeral held Monday at his residence with Rev W T Triddy officiating. interment at Highland cemetery. Out-of-town relatives included Dr B F Rhodes and several Bean and Peden family members.
Penick-Hughes store decor adds a ladies rest room with rocking chairs mirrors and a full set of dressing room amenities. A new back showroom displays living room bedroom dining and kitchen sets on a perpetual display and can be staged on request for individual customers. General manager RL Haynie spearheads the merchandising innovation.
Stamford Chamber of Commerce promotes a three day trade trip for local business men September 10 to 12 with all expenses paid except organizers and guests. Itinerary visits Hamlin Lagerton Glory Aspermont Swenson Peacock Jayton Girard Spur and more with a fourth day through Haskell Throckmorton Woodson Albany and Lueders Avoca. The group plans lively pep squads and seeks slogans with a $25 prize for the best five word city slogan.
The Daily Vacation Bible School at Methodit church attracts strong attendance. A splended Bible structure course features music, storytelling, missionary journeys and recreation. Directors include Mesdames Moore, Smith, Dodson, Duncan, Rutherford, Estes and Misses Porter, Terry and Stewart. Saturday at 5 30 p m the school closes with a picnic and program for district departments. parents invited.
Tuesday morning a fire drew firefighters to a residence in Bomar Heights occupied by D. M. Thomas formerly of Durant Oklahoma. The home owned by the late J. N. Rhodes carried $500 in insurance and Thomas held $1000 coverage on household furnishings. Origin of the blaze was not determined due to late report.
Mr and Mrs Williamette Culwell of Avoca and Stamford have moved to Memphis Texas where Culwell will serve as choir leader for the Methodist church. He has spent two weeks in a Shamrock revival with Stamford pastor Bro Doak. He is an excellent revival singer and soloist, and Stamford hoped to keep him, but the local church could not fund a singer.

Miss Romena Miller daughter of Mr and Mrs L O Miller of Stamford married D I Jones of Decatur Texas in Anson at 6 o clock The groom runs a mercantile business with his father The bride moved to Stamford from Decatur and will reside in Decatur after a short visit with her parents and friends extend congratulations to the couple
11 month old James Coe, son of Mr and Mrs James Coe of Sueders, died Monday at home and was buried Tuesday at Highland Cemetery north of the city. Penick Hughes Undertaking Department handled arrangements.
Mrs J G Perkins, age fifty five, suffers a broken left arm, then rebreaks it. While resting she falls from a back porch railing, breaking her right arm. Dr Fred Hudson set both arms and she rests well amid frail health.
Stamford Rotary Club formed a committee with Dr. Dallas Southard A H Goldsticker and I H Terry to aid the school in organizing a high school band. If twenty or more join Mr Collum will offer three after school periods weekly for training in fundamentals of music. Interested pupils may contact Mr Holland or Mr Collum soon.
Hank Peters develops a clocking mechanism for a Ford car where a mounted bird emerges at 25 miles per hour to sing Near my God to Thee. At 2 percent speed the bird shifts to Lord, I am coming Home.
Master Robert Kinard arrived Monday morning August 25 and will reside with Mr and Mrs R M Kinard on North Swenson Avenue. He is a healthy lad and expected to follow in his father’s Buick Motor business.
The Kinney family from Stamford with Mr. and Mrs. Kinney and children Fate Fred and Lois were returning from visiting relatives near Gorman Texas when their Buick collided head on with Mrs. Craig in a Ford. Fate Kinney, age nine, died within minutes. Fred was badly hurt but to recover. Mrs Kinney, Mrs Hargrove, and Mr Hargrove suffered injuries. Lois escaped unharmed. Funeral services for Fate Kinney were held in Gorman.
The Dorcas Bible Class of St. John's Church will hold its monthly meeting next Wednesday at the Methodist church. Hosts include Mesdamea L. A. Guatafeon Far McNabb J. FE. Massey F. B. Owen and N. B. Holland.
The Church of Christ announces evangelist J. D. Harvey resumes work with local forces after eleven weeks in mission tent ministry. One hundred additions and three new congregations are ready to begin. A brief tent meeting follows a Sunday service at eleven, relocating to the tent Monday night on a locally located lot. Harvey promises straightforward Bible teaching without politics or sensationalism.
Mr and Mrs W N Kinney and Mr and Mrs W H Hargrove thank the Church of Christ Woodmen Circle and friends for assistance and sympathy during their misfortune. They express deep appreciation for the kindness shown by neighbors and supporters.
A letter from Mrs. F. M. Meredith thanks friends and neighbors for kindnesses during her illness. She thanks those who sent cats and flowers and wishes God’s blessings on all who cared for her.
The Jones County Farm Products Exhibit will be held in Hamlin on September 18. County Agent J R Masterson reports strong local interest and a liberal premium list from Harlin merchants about 200 in value, plus a 70 dollar loving cup for the best community exhibit. The event aims to showcase county farming progress and is expected to send its top entries to the West Texas Fair in Abilene.
Penick-Hughes Hardware clerks Jeff Haynie and C. P. Petty earn praise for a unique camping scene window display. The hunting camp setup features a teepee, campfire, camp gear, and hunting knives to promote hunting equipment and Peters Sheila products. Stamford residents return home after visits to Wellington and California.
Mrs W T Williams and her daughter Mies Rita, from three miles out of town, were shopping and visiting on Saturday. Rita recently returned from Itaska where she enjoyed a trip to San Antonio and to Old Mexico with friends. She will return to Itaska soon after accepting a good position there.
W. B. Copeland and family of Lubbock and W. L. Tunnell and family of Slaton returned home Saturday after visiting here. Mrs. T. B. Tunnell and Miss Ruth and Charlie Tunnell and Mrs. Foster Copeland and daughter Misa Lillia accompanied them. Mrs. Copeland and daughter will stay for the winter while the latter attends high school in Lubbock again.
DD G Hurst and family plus A W Hanson and others from Plainview mingled business and pleasure in Stamford Saturday and were greeted with friendly calls from the American Community members including Miss Ethel Hurst Miss Ruby Campbell Faye Hurst Tilda Kahout Blanton Brown and others.
Mrs J A Middleton and daughters Lora and Mattie Merle with Dayle Middleton traveled to Dev on where Lora earned an AB degree on Thursday. Mrs Dayle visited Sherman, others visited ILaska Hubbard and Mt Calm, returning late week. W Pratt of Roswell, NM, former townsman, visited family here and was praised for community spirit.
J T Stephenson and Mrs C T Fason rush to Santa Anna after their niece Jodie Ranson dies just before arrival. Miles Enson sterilizes instruments and sticks her hand with a instrument causing blood poisoning. Ranson, 18, was only child and described as a lovely girl.
