Local Stamford Merchants Close Monday for Labor Day

Stamford retail merchants will close Monday for Labor Day. Big Country Savings Association and Stamford City Hall will close as well, and the U S Post Office will be closed. The Stamford American will operate normal hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

School year opens as Lueders schools set Sept 2

School begins September 2 for Lueders Elementary students and for Lueders Avoca High students in Avoca. The start date applies to both primary and secondary levels in the district.

Stamford Wins $392000 HUD Revitalization Grant

Stamford receives a $392000 Community Development grant from HUD as phase two of a three year $1.2 million revitalization program. City manager Ken Roberson says funds must be used in the west target area for housing, demolition, relocation, and street improvements with bids out for paving and renovations at Washington and Wendeborn parks and $60,000 to $65,000 planned for park work.

Stamford Gains 14 Percent In City Sales Tax Receipts

City hall receipts show Stamford collecting 81,063.35 in 1980 sales tax for July totals, up 14 percent from 1980 July, with Knox City leading area with 36 percent rise. July payments include Anson 5,469.03 Hamlin 5,885.72 Haskell 9,346.97 and Knox City 5,103.80. Stamford’s second July check adds 15,995.40, boosting year to date to 97,058.75 with next payment due Sept 15.

Back to School in Stamford Three Schools Open at 8:20 a.m

Students return after three months of vacation as Stamford’s three schools begin classes at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday. Breakfast starts at 8:00 for 35 cents, reduced-price meals available, and the first Stamford Bulldogs football game is set for 8 p.m. in Hamlin. Enrollment tallies show Oliver 253, Reynolds 190, junior high 136, Stamford High 256. Sandy Mueller elected PTO president at Oliver Elementary for 1980-81.

Sheriff Gillilan Rescues 19 Month Old After Crash

Jones County Sheriff Doyce Gillilan saved the life of a 19 month old infant by mouth to mouth resuscitation after a one car accident east of Anson. Gillilan arrived at the scene with Anson volunteer firemen and transported the non breathing baby to Anson General Hospital where revival was possible.

Stamford Absence Policy And Bus Routes Detailed

Absence notices must be given by a parent or guardian the day of or before an absence. Unexcused absences lead to no make up work. School activities and illness justify excused absences. Seniors have two days to arrange college entry. Bus routes are announced by Sue Miller, with Trice, Torres, and Wilson operating routes in Stamford. Lunch times vary by school and grade levels.

Statewide results show Stamford students in grade nine above averages in mathematics grammar and handwriting though reading trailed the state average. Handwriting reached 95 percent acceptable while fifth graders showed strong reading grammar and handwriting with 97 percent acceptable in handwriting.

Burch Charged with Rape and Rapes Case Notes

Gary V. Burch of Stamford is jailed in Jones County on rape and sexual abuse charges involving a 13 year old and a 10 year old sister, with a grand jury date pending after arrest on August 21 near Stamford. Billy Bob Moon, 19, and David Smith, 17, were found in Abilene amid arson inquiry into a Stamford residence fire on August 17 at 601 East Moran, with Moon jailed and Smith released on bond. a juvenile suspect was released to parents. The blaze at M. Gannaway’s two story home caused smoke damage and a damaged laundry room wall.

Tickets On Sale For Stamford School Football Season

Season tickets are on sale at the Stamford School Tax Office at 128 South Swenson. Reserve seats for six home games cost $15. Ticket holders from 1979 can renew through Friday, Sept. 5. The first varsity home game is against San Angelo Lakeview at 8 p.m. September 12.

Screening service returns to city in Stamford

Texas Department of Health Region 4 resumes screening service in Stamford on September 17. The clinic runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Stamford Library, with immunizations available from 1 to 3 p.m.
