Stamford merchants advertise personal clothing lines for boys and young men with a focus on versatile outfits for school and casual life. The feature promotes slacks suits coats jeans shirts shoes and bargains, urging shoppers to start the school season in style.
Company M of the 42nd Infantry 26th Division under Capt. Charles Tayman completes two weeks at Camp Hood and heads home Sunday. The unit reports good conduct, rapid learning, and health with modest meals, medical supervision, and Sunday church services. several members attend gas, combat intelligence, and communications schools.
John P. Ball, 60, of near Creckenridge, father of Mrs. Ana Donna Yoes, burned to death Monday afternoon when a hay barn caught fire during loading. A truck in the building blocked escape and the loft collapsed. Survived by wife, two daughters and three sons.
Stamford All Stars schedule a doubleheader against Brownwood Payne team Friday at 8 15 p m local time. The game was announced Thursday and takes place here.
The first bale of the 1946 season was ginned Monday morning in Stamford by E. C. Tidwell Jr. The bale weighed 502 pounds, graded middling 7 8, grown southeast of the city. The gin paid 30 cents a pound for lint and $70 per ton for seed. a $100 merchants’ premium funded by the Chamber of Commerce. A second bale followed later by Joe Benton. Other city gins prepare for season as cotton is not expected to mature until September 10. heat and dry weather slow growth but aid insect control.
Stamford high school football players will travel to Wichita Falls to watch the Texas versus Oklahoma All-Star game. About 45 boys, with coaches Coleman and McClure, depart Stamford around 2 p.m. in two buses and return after the game. Expenses for the trip are admission and one meal. Regular camp starts Sunday night with two morning hours and three evening hours of practice, plus skull drills. Albert Crider and Euetil Appling receive special praise for progress.
A new florist shop is opening in Stamford at 321 East Hamilton Street by Reagan Rutledge, a seasoned florist formerly in Fort Worth. He and his wife have moved to Stamford. The interior is being rearranged and a display room prepared. The shop will be equipped with refrigeration and cooling to care for flowers.
Reverend Fred Moreland pastor of Corinth and Tuxedo Baptist churches will be guest speaker on KDWT radio for Pleasant Grove program Sunday 7 30 to 8 a m He will deliver the first anniversary service sermon for the church at 11 a m Sunday announced Reverend Scott W Hickey
Mr and Mrs Cobb Wade relocate to Lubbock with Patsy Louise. Mrs Wade joins the Avalanche Journal staff as a nurse at the school, while Patsy Louise plans to enroll there.
The Stamford Jaycees conduct a cross section poll of six public questions to gauge citizen interest and public reaction. Signals from responses will influence whether the Jaycees push these matters. Citizens are asked to clip and mail the questionnaire to the Stamford Juniors Chamber of Commerce.
Residents weigh proposals for traffic lights at city square intersections and near City Pig. They consider annual financial statements in papers and twice weekly trash pickup plus nightly street sweeping. Opinions on more street lights and a zoning law are mixed.
An immunization clinic sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association Council will be held September 6 and 7 at the home economics cottage. Hours are 4 to 12 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m., announced Mrs. H. J. Moreland, council president. The clinic serves six year olds needing diphtheria or smallpox vaccines and other new Stamford students may attend. Nurses Mrs. Clay Markham and Mrs. J. H. Buie will run the clinic with PTA volunteers.
The War Department notifies Mr and Mrs John Wendeborn that Staff Sgt L A Wendeborn body will reach Stamford Friday morning Aug 27 for reburial. Killed in action Sept 9 1943 at Salerno he is survived by parents two sisters and two brothers. Funeral Sunday at 2 pm Kinney Funeral Chapel with military honors by Stamford American Legion posts.
Funeral service for Steff Set Joseph L. McKennon, killed on Tuyen Minh on May 14, 1944, was held Wednesday at 2 30 p m at the Methodist Church in Tuxedo with Rev Jim Skiles officiating. Reburial followed at Fairview Cemetery in Tuxedo with Kinnes and Corley Funeral Home leading. Military rites were performed by the American Legion and VFW posts of Stamford after the body arrived Tuesday morning.
Voters in Stamford head to the polls Saturday to complete Democratic nominations for public office not resolved in July. The county commissioner Precinct 2 race pits John Massey against Henry Cook as Bates and White contend in other local contests. Bates withdrew but then remained in the race. White left to take a gun manager post and could not take the oath.
A choral festival inviting the public will be held Friday evening August 27 at 8 p m at the First Baptist Church. The program features classes and laboratory choirs from the school of church music directed by W F Gallemore with Mrs C M Lester and Albert Russell as accompanists.
Mrs. Mamie Rector of Austin visits her son Tommie Rector. Her sister Mrs. C Rogers and Mr. Rogers have returned from Roswell New Mexico for a stay and enjoy a visit together.
The Stamford Jaycees announced they will present two metal football goal posts to the Stamford Bulldog field. Supt. L W Johnson welcomed the gift. L E Million presided. The meeting covered business matters and plans for a September 14 fair fashion show at the Grand Theatre with stores supplying models and Mrs. Tony Selmon as emcee. Janice Baird and her mother provided two musical numbers.
Ruth Greenwood of Del Rio arrived Wednesday to visit sister Mrs. Cleburne Huston and family. Bobby Stuston spent last weekend in Galveston, traveling by plane from Abilene.
