Amended Charter Bets Big Vote in Second Democratic Primary

Heavy turnout expected in Jones county and statewide as second Democratic primary unfolds. In Precinct 2 Stamford Avoca and nearby areas see two contests Hod Mitchell versus C L Meeker for justice of the peace and Fred W Taylor versus Steve Bennett for cotton weigher. County races include Luella Hank versus B T Beaver for county superintendent Wright versus Francis for county clerk Griffith versus Putnam for tax assessor. District and state races feature R Lee versus Oscar Callaway for congress and Farle Bo Mayfield versus Tom Connally for the US Senate.

Morrell Dies At Farm Home From Acid Ingestion

T D Morrell well known citizen died at his farm home east of Stamford Tuesday night around 9 50. Cause of death said to be carbolic acid self administered. Inquest held by Judge J Meeker with Crow assisting. Funeral at First Baptist Church Thursday at 1 pm conducted by Rev Joel V Crimes, Rev W C Moffett and Rev Fred S Rogers. Interment Highland cemetery Kinney Jones in charge. Survived by his wife and one son T D Morrell Jr. Also a daughter Mrs A V Davis.

Rotary barbecue at Country Club planned by Stamford club

A Stamford Rotary Club event will host a chicken barbecue on the Country Club lawn next Tuesday at 7 p.m. Hamlin Rotarians and their ladies will be guests, replacing the noon meeting. Earlier, Rotarians enjoyed a program by local artists Bennie Burrow, Dale Middleton, N M Phy, and Henry Brandon.

Shrine Ceremonial Set for Stamford on Labor Day

Stamford plans a Labor Day Shrine Ceremonial with Maskat Temple of Wichita Falls in charge. The parade starts at 1 pm after a 10 am registration for novices at City Auditorium, with a 6:50 pm ceremonial and open-air entertainment. Visitors from up to 100 miles are expected, making Stamford host its largest crowd in history.

Miss Vaughn To Have Charge Of Nutrition Work

The Red Cross nutrition program will continue in Stamford this fall with Miss Vaughn in charge. Miss Mary Florence Waggner who led the work for two Falls has married Eo L. Tanner and they reside in Spur. Vaughn will be in Stamford from September to January 1.

Mrs J W Rye and infant daughter buried in Stamford

Funeral services for Mrs J W Rye and her infant daughter Edina Louise were held Tuesday at the Church of Christ. The death followed hours after the infant’s passing at a hospital. Interment was in Highland Cemetery. The deceased, born February 1 1888 in Tennessee, had lived in Jones county since age seven and was a 25 year member of the Church of Christ. She is survived by husband J W Rye and three children Ina Mar Warren and James, mother Mre a Rh McCray and step father Mr McCray, four sisters and two brothers. Her husband works in the postal service.

Sagerton Luther League Holds Regional Convention

Members from Sagerton Lockney Winter Southhand Posey Wilson Wichita Falls and Sagerton gathered in Lockney on Saturday August 11 for a Luther League convention. The event featured a welcome by Edwin Boedeker Sagerton pastor Herbert Niedieck spoke, leagues unified into a single body, evening lectures, and a long joint program. Attendees from Sagerton listed include Kluge Franke Stegemoller Nauert Neinast Manske Spitzer Baumbach Quade Nemasty Nierdieck and many others. Next year the convention is planned for Sagerton.

Long List Of District Court Trials Slated For September Term

The September term of district court opens September 4 in Stamford with numerous cases on the docket. Shaw Tire Store Wins Abilene District Contest

The Shaw Tire Company of Stamford won first place in the Abilene District contest that pitted Hicks Rubber Company stores and associates in a $100,000 a week sales campaign. Stamford had previously placed second for two weeks, with Sweetwater second last week.

Revival to Open at First Baptist Church September 9

A two week revival begins September 9 at First Baptist Church Corsicana led by Rev J Howard Williams. Services will be held twice daily with Williams preaching and Roy Camp of Fort Worth directing music for the meeting. Rev Moffett requests the public to attend and save the dates.

City Adopts Police Election and Salary Amendments

Amendments to the city charter were approved by nearly two to one, providing for popular election of the chief of police starting next April and raising the mayoral salary to 50 per month and council salary to 6 per regular meeting. The changes set salary limits, not fixed amounts, and require an ordinance to enact actual changes.

Last Of Series Of Union Services Held Sunday

The final in a August Sunday evening union series by Stamford churches will be at Firet Baptist Church. St John’s Methodist pastor Kev K A Stewart will preach. Interest grew as services drew large crowds, including last Sunday night when Key M MO Harris preached to a nearly full auditorium.

Standard Training School Set to Open September 9

The Sunday School Standard Training School of the Stamford District will begin at St John’s Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon September 1 and run through the following Friday. Visitors from nearby towns are expected to participate in the program, with courses on The Primary Pupil, Stewardship, The Program of Christian Religion, The Worker and His Bible, Testament Section, The Organization and Administration of the Sunday School, and one of the Dakesbury Courses.

Beauchamp Recovering From Bullet Wounds in Hamlin Incident

Mrs Beauchamp of Hamlin is reported in Stamford Sanitarium recovering from gunshot wounds inflicted by her husband in a Hamlin law office last Friday. Hamlin lawyer KA. FE. Rodgers credited with saving her life after a struggle during which his finger was shot off. Beauchamp jailed in Anson, awaiting release.

Election Returns To Be Published By Stamford Papers

The Stamford Leader and Stamford American will jointly receive election returns Saturday night. The Texas Election Bureau in Dallas will send results that arrive shortly after polls close at o clock and will be posted in front of the Alcave Theater.

Reverend Harris Named to Moody Honor Committee

Rev Marion Harrie of Stamford has been named to the Moody honor committee for Governor Dan Moody at the American Legion national convention in San Antonio. Department Commander Walton Hiwanrt announced the appointment, with Harrie to serve as escort and guard of honor during the Legion gathering. Governor visiting Lowenstate and auxiliary members will participate in the program at the convention.
