The Cowboy Country Museum in Stamford hosts 25 paintings from the Texas Cultural Alliance International Children's Showcase Sept 2–25. Open weekdays 8:30 am–noon and 1–5 pm with free admission.

Citizens advisory committee that aided the school board in evaluating the need for a building program last spring has been invited to meet with the school board and administrators on Thursday Aug 14 at 7:30 in the high school cafeteria. The group toured all schools inspecting classrooms band rooms art rooms shops ag buildings cafeteria and stadiums before making a unified recommendation. The meeting will discuss the future of the schools physical plant and community function.
Stamford Public School registers all grades on August 26 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Oliver school opens at 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Kindergarten must bring immunization and birth records. Reynolds students register 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. New Reynolds students bring health and academic records. Stamford High School registrations occur 9:00 to 12:00 with seniors in the study hall, juniors in the Auditorium, sophomores in Home Economics, freshmen in room 21, eighth graders in room 1, seventh graders in room 10.
City fire trucks responded around 9 p.m. Saturday Aug 9 to the vacant Stamford Hospital location where rubble from a demolition two years ago caught fire. Heavy smoke issued as dry grass and weeds fed the flames and crews moved slabs of concrete with a bulldozer to reach the fire. Fire Marshall Bill Lawson said the blaze started from the dry vegetation surrounding the debris.
The Knox City Country Club will host the Guys and Dolls Tournament on August 16 and 17. Play starts anytime before 2:00 p.m. Saturday with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. a brisket supper is included in the entry fee.
The Jones County Fair kicks off with a parade at 6:00 p.m. on Friday August 15 followed by a Playnight at Charlie Myatt Arena. Open Horse Show on August 16 starts at 9:00 a.m. with Youth Halter, Open Performance, Open Halter and jackpots. The Stamford Optimist Club announced winners of its grocery shopping spree at J.R. Supermarket. First place goes to Bessie Shite of Avoca for a three minute spree, second to Peggy Ekdahl of Avoca for two minutes.
The Jones County Extension Service announces an information day in Anson County at the Anson Activity Center on August 28. Necy Wilburn and Gary Stanford note the noon meal at 12:00, with the business meeting starting at 12:30 and sub committee reports on Family Living Aging Cotton and Grain Sorghum Livestock and 4 H Youth. An election of officers for the Executive Committee will follow.
Liberty Christian Fellowship hosts a three day seminar August 13 to 15 at the Lions Club Building with Rev. Brian Peay of North Little Rock Arkansas leading nightly services at 7 00 p m Donna Peay will sing with him The speaker previously led Paint Rock Baptist Church and served as associate pastor at First Baptist Stamford He helped start nine churches and missions across Arkansas and Mississippi and founded New Life Ministries in 1977
The Stamford School Board will hold a public hearing on its 7.2 percent tax rate increase today at 7 p.m. in the school administration building. The board met August 4 to set the rate for the coming year, with taxes rising to match last year’s revenue due to new oil value and added improvements. Most properties remain unchanged, some decrease, a few rise, and attendees can learn details at the meeting.
Band director Alvin Young announced That Bulldog Band starts August 18 with 7 to 9 pm sessions for two weeks before school. Sessions include conditioning marching and music rehearsal with percussion until 10 pm. A new shoe is required. details at first rehearsal. The band will perform at Hamlin game on September 5.
The Stamford Public school system released required supplies for kindergarten through third grade. Kindergarten students need Manila paper, pencils, glue, scissors, a school box, and Kleenex. first grade requires crayons, pencils, glue, a school box, and Kleenex. second grade uses tablets, crayons, pencils, glue, and Kleenex. third grade lists notebook paper, pencils, crayons, glue, scissors, and a notebook binder.
A federal jury awarded $33 000 to Moore Brothers Company of Abilene from Aetna Casualty and Surety Company on a bonding policy. The suit, heard in Abilene by U.S. District Judge Hal Woodward, concerned money taken by former manager Ron Davis at the Stamford Gibson Discount Center starting in 1974.
Ike Liles, 1979 Stamford High School graduate and All-District football player, played corner back and wing back in the Greenbelt All-Star game in Childress on Saturday August 10. He made multiple tackles, knocked down a pass, recovered a fumble, and returned a kickoff. Robin McCandless represented Stamford in pageantry with other area youths.
Early childhood screening will be conducted Thursday September 4 1980 for 3 4 or 5 year olds. Parents who worry about their child’s readiness may bring them to Oliver School from 9 00 to 11 00 a m to receive assistance.
A free screening clinic sponsored by the Texas Department of Health will be held at the Stamford Library on Wednesday August 20 1980 from 10:00 to 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Tests include blood pressure diabetes anemia skin disorders height and weight. An abnormal finding leads to physician referral. An Immunization Clinic also runs August 20 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. for DPT Polio Measles Mumps Rubella and Adult D.T. Bring immunization records.
