Farmers vote starting Monday on delegates to the county Agricultural Stabilization and Marketing Administration conventions. County office records list Jones and Haig as delegates or candidates and indicate roles for the county office manager.
West Side Missionary Baptist Church led by Rev Leo Greene launches revival Sunday August 15 with Rev James Edge of Central Baptist Haskell preaching. Song leader McClellan and pianist Mrs McClellan headline evening services as the public is invited to attend. Balloting for county ASC delegates in Jones and Haskell counties runs August 16 to 23 with ten candidates per community and five to be elected.
The Foursquare Church Vacation Bible School launches Friday on East Campbell Street with registration at 10 a.m. The event runs daily 8:30 to 11 a.m. through August 20, featuring four age departments for 3 to 15 years and a parade in Stamford Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Prestated by Rev J Marchbanks and Mrs Marchbanks, the program centers on Christ with no specific doctrine taught.
Vernon R. Leverett, two years Munday high coach, becomes Old Glory School superintendent succeeding O J Davis. Leverett holds a master’s from Hardin Simmons, previously coached Clyde eight years with district and regional titles and a 1947 regional championship. his Clyde teams dominated district titles and track state titles.
Bruce Lawrence about five, son of Mr and Mrs John Lawrence, was stricken with polio Sunday. He is in the polio ward at Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene. Doctors advised further tests in Abilene. Tests confirmed the disease and the condition was not considered critical.
Members of the Cat baseball team and managers Ralph W Carpenter and J D Wende born were honored at an ice cream supper Monday night at the local park. The Dads and Mothers of the players hosted the event. The Cats finished second in the Stamford Teen Age Loop and discussed highlights of the 1954 season and aims for next year. Kenneth Ivy, field captain, thanked the managers and players for cooperation. Ice cream and cookies were served. Mr and Mrs Dallas Taylor and daughters visited.
Stamford National Guard Armory construction may start in 60 to 75 days after bids are invited. City donated site near College Lake will host the project. Capt. James Lindsey says Gen. Dallas Matthews approved the plat and authorized bidding, with a one year lease on Arledge Field hanger renewed meanwhile.
Stamford Rotarians heard Jim McCulloch describe Rotary International as a $2,800,000 annual business with 16 board directors, Zurich offices, and new Chicago offices. The Rotary Foundation Fellowship funds 400 students yearly, with over $3 million in assets and 8300 clubs in eight geographic regions. Stamford Rotary operates with autonomy and held a member biographical sketch contest won by Weaver Medlin for Warren Taymon.
Haskell County will dedicate 50 acre Haskell Park on Paint Creek near Lake Stamford on Sunday August 22. The park donated by Mrs S W Scott and the Scott store honors Judge S W Scott with a water carnival featuring boat races surf board riding and water skiing plus prizes totalling 400. Facilities include a boat dock graded roads lights restrooms and planned water lines and cesspools. The site already hosts fishermen and will host a band concert and other entertainment during the dedication.
Diana Chandler works as a swimming counselor and Sonja Chandler serves as a junior counselor at Western Life Camp in Montezuma New Mexico for a two week session.
Stamford High school pep squad will march Monday at 5330 ppm at the high school. Pep squad members are asked to report at that time.
Small son of Mr and Mrs Bob Monzingo of Abilene sustained a broken arm after a fall while playing in a park there. The Monzingo family formerly lived in the area. Mrs PR Bettis and daughter Mrs B R Webb and Mr Webb returned August 6 from seven weeks at their Wah Keeney Park summer home near Evergreen Colorado. They left June 17 and visited Cheyenne Laramie Estes Park and toured the mountains during their trip.
Washington school opens Monday August 16 with regular classes starting next week. This district school begins earlier than city rivals and recesses for a break during the cotton harvest season.
Nancy Ashcroft district president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship Stamford district will attend the South Central Jurisdictional Workshop at Mt Sequoyah near Fayetteville Arkansas August 11 to 20. She is among 12 Northwest Texas Conference representatives and travels with Rey Jack Riley of Vernon.
Mrs Howard Overby celebrated a hospitalized birthday in Stamford Sanitarium on Wednesday as nurses and friends arranged refreshments. A decorated cake punch and gaily wrapped gifts brightened the room while her husband and young son Stevie visited, making the day feel like home.
Medlin Morris Tire Co moves to the corner of North Swenson and Moran streets after finalizing a relocation from West McHare street. Weaver Medlin co-owner purchased the building from Mrs. C. T. Dod son. formal opening awaits finishing touches. Frank Legan joins as credit manager, plans to relocate his family soon.
Symptoms of polio proved to be a virus infection for A C Berry Jr. He was taken to the polio center at Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene on August 4. At doctors suggestion he was moved to Abilene for tests. Spinal tests showed no polio. He remained in isolation about six hours and stayed in the hospital until Friday morning receiving virus infection treatment. He is getting along nicely.
H G Andrews Jr Stamford attorney spoke to the Exchange Club at Nat s Cafe about the proposed constitutional amendments. He urged studying the amendments before voting to cast an informed ballot.
In Haskell County a suit filed in the 39th District Court by Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Wood seeks to label Lake Stamford as a nuisance and restore flood-affected land to its predam state. The plaintiffs seek 154 035 dollars in damages from the City of Stamford and West Texas Utilities Company. The case notes the dam’s encroachment splitting the Wood ranch and flooding 1101 58 acres, with negotiations for the Wood property having repeatedly failed. The city had not yet been served as of Wednesday afternoon.
Stamford city council asked City Manager Harry Steenson to contact Archie Scott about acquiring about 35 acres from the Nettie Nelson tract for a lakefront park between existing city land and the pump station. The meeting also filled a chamber of commerce director vacancy, discussed paving Hudson road, and noted decades of no city street paving payments.
Walter Jones about 40 of Peacock died at Stamford Sanitarium Friday night after an explosion in a cistern on the Tom Matthews ranch near Peacock. He was burned while cleaning the cistern and died despite blood transfusion. Springer Funeral Home of Aspermont is handling arrangements.
Mrs H K Langford and Miss Ethel Rowell from Stamford High school Mrs Howard Goss of Avoca join others for the State Conference of Homemaking Teachers this week in San Antonio.
Mrs. Mac Lester and her son Fred sail from Seattle aboard the USS General Kandel to Yokohama to join Lt. Lester who left for foreign service. They will reunite in about 11 days and spend a week together before continuing duty with the 15th Medical Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, in Japan.
