Conservationist Ernest L. Cowger of the California Creek Soil Conservation District reports July 24 soil temperatures at two and a half inches depth under different covers near Stamford. Bare ground reached 126 degrees while air was 102. Cover crops and residues ranged from 82 to 96 degrees, with Costal Bermuda grass at 86. Vegetative covers reduce heat, erosion, and improve water intake.

Stamford city council approved new speed limits on Highway 277 after a Texas Highway Commission recommendation.
