Stamford city manager Grady Bowdry explains the odor in local water stems from moss like plant growth in settling basins. When it dies the odor appears though the water remains harmless and is treated with chlorine gas for safety. Abilene reports similar odor from the same cause.
The United Charities held its regular fifth Monday meeting at St Johns Methodist Church with Mrs. C O Miller presiding. Reports showed total distributions of 452.66 to assist the needy, with 97.05 in treasury and plans to elect officers at the next meeting October 30 at St Lukes Episcopal Church.
Spurgeon Reeves is appointed manager of the Stamford Co-Operative Society gin and prepares for the upcoming ginning season. He formerly served as district clerk of Jones county and has farmed in the county’s southern part. Reeves and his wife Porter of Wash. are raising twelve daughters and a son.
Funeral services for J Griffin High 41 president of the Stamford Exchange Club and civic leader were conducted at the Church of Christ with local and visiting pastors officiating. High died Saturday after a weeklong struggle following an appendix operation. Interment followed at Highland cemetery in Stamford.
T J Boston agent for the M E Katy Railway at Stamford and fellow Texas Central agents met in Waco with F W Grace and D C Dobbins. Grace praised last year’s Katy profits as it plans to increase station employees at several points along the Texas Central division.
The Dry Forces of the 24th district for Jones Taylor Haskell Throckmorton and Shackelford counties plan a regional rally on the Anson courthouse lawn Sunday night August 6. Dr. Lee Clark of Randolph College Cisco will give the main address. The program begins with a 45 minute musical segment and pastors are urged to dismiss Sunday services to attend. The rally starts at 8 45 PM to allow early services and travel time.
Rev. Sam Morris notes 488 in Sunday School 70 dollars offering. Seven baptisms planned next Sunday night. Mid week Bible study emphasizes Bible only curriculum and Genesis chapters 29 to 31. August 20 marks third anniversary of his pastorate with plans for all day services and dinner on the ground.
Mrs J G Heald of Anderson Chapel Jones County won first prize in Class I wardrobe demonstration at the A M College Short Course, earning a Singer sewing machine. She competed with about ninety counties and will address Stamford Rotary Club next Tuesday. A Jones County delegation of 51 attended led by Miss Sue Bonner with 11 men and 7 boys among them. Otis Miller spoke on County Government and District 2 won three first places in state competition including wardrobe.
Company K of the 142nd Infantry Texas National Guard in Stamford will entrain today for its tenth annual camp at Camp Hulen. The unit, organized in 1923 by E. V. Hardwick W. G. Swenson and R. A. Fuqua, has a history of camps at Mabry Crockett Palacios and now Hulen. Training includes drills, hikes, guard duty and rifle practice with boxing swimming fishing wrestling baseball and softball as sports. Living conditions are described as ideal with strong sanitation measures.
Local minister H W Wrye announces a revival at Stamford Church of Christ starting Sunday August 13. J P Crenshaw of Cypress Street Church of Christ of Aileen will lead a series of gospel sermons described as educational and inspirational. Crenshaw led a successful meeting here last year.
Stamford business leaders joined the NRA blanket code with near full participation as 166 firms received emblems at the local post office. The town reports shorter hours, wage scales, and price adjustments across offices retail stores garages filling stations and service trades under the President's recovery program.
M. Robin of San Angelo plans a new Robin’s Department Store on the west side square in Stamford. L. Levy of San Angelo will manage the Stamford shop as preparations continue. A full family clothing line will be offered as the interior and front are redecorated.
Ivan Mills a Quincy Mass sign painter has just completed his eighteenth operation in twenty years reflecting a long medical ordeal in his local community.
The Stamford Exchange Club plans its annual Sunshine Special picnic for August 17 with hundreds of children from pre seventh grade invited. A locomotive led excursion departs City Auditorium at 2 pm and returns between 7 and 7:30 pm from Encampment grounds at Leeders for games, drinks, and food. Adults must pay admission unless driving a club automobiles used as the train. experienced drivers will be recruited from civic groups. The general chairman will soon assemble committee chairs to finalize details.
Miss Lilias Penick Jones announces the first District Y W A House Party at Lueders Encampment August 7 to 9. Jones County Baptist young women pay 25 cents, bring cot and bedding, and contribute food or ice for meals. Stamford girls supply ice. rural churches may bring a dressed hen or canned goods. Seven study classes, two Y W A method conferences, and inspirational speakers will guide the program with music and recreation. Stamford attendees should contact Mrs. Frank Heflin.
Rev. E A Irvin will open a revival at Ketron Methodist church in the Post community Friday night. He recently concluded a revival at Morris Chapel church in Howard County where eight conversions and seven additions to the church were reported.
J H Chapin 48 of Rule died after a car overturning on a curve eight miles west of Albany. J W Hawk 32 of Rule suffered a punctured lung and fractured skull. Chapin died at Stamford Sanitarium Thursday morning with funeral set for Friday at 10. Survived by five children, three brothers, two sisters.
The Methodist Church hosts a Sunday service in song led by Rev. C R Hooton with an assisting choir and quartets. The sermon, My Heavenly Home, parallels John 14 and features organ and piano by Mrs N M Phy and Mrs C R Hooton. The service begins at 8 15 PM with Lord's Supper Sunday morning.
The Stamford Tailoring Company plant has been acquired by M. P. Red Jones and A. N. Reed Jr. It will operate as Jones & Reed Tailors. Jones formerly worked at DeLuxe Cleaners and Reed at the Stamford Laundry dry cleaning department.
