A total of 2.06 inches fell in Stamford through April 23, with 1.38 inches overnight. The river rain did not raise Stamford’s water supply at Lueders, but helped flush low spots and may aid future withdrawals after the next rainfall.
Stamford Bulldogs, a strong Class A track program, scored 36 points at the Region 2 meet in Brownwood on April 19 and qualified both relays and five individuals for state. Raymond Maxwell won the 440 and anchored two winning relays while Jerry Perwitt took the 100 and David Bashford won the discus.
Mrs John Gibbs was installed as president of the Oliver Street PTA along with new officers Mrs W Dodd vice president Mrs Vernon Smith treasurer and Mrs H D Wilka secretary at the April 15 meeting conducted by Mrs Dave Walker. Retiring officers were Mrs Dick Carson president Mrs L R Rose vice president Rev John Gibbs treasurer and Mrs Kennedy secretary. Garth McCallum will be publicity chairman and Mrs Rose spoke on Our Resources Our Destiny. Delegates were named for the district meeting at Brownfield April 25 with a vote to keep evening meetings for another year.
The homemaking class at Stamford High School leads a style show in the high school auditorium on Thursday evening April 24 at 8 p m. Sponsored by the Pierian Club it is one of the club’s regular meetings. Miss Ethel Rowell in charge with hostesses Mrs R L Howse and Mrs E E Clark. District convention report to be presented.
Reverend Bill Austin of East Side Baptist Church Has kell will hold a revival at East McHarg Baptist Church from Sunday April 27 to Sunday May 4. Each evening prayer and song start 7:30 pm with preaching at 8 pm. Wayne Baldwin leads song and Mrs Willie Mae McCann plays piano. All are invited.
About 8000 will be spent on improvements at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds in readiness for the 1952 event on July 1 to 4. The plan includes 10 acres of land purchase from Swenson Land and Cattle Co and moving Quarter Horse barns north of the Old Mill road to ease congestion and reduce fire hazards. Ed Jones leads the project with C A Johnson handling general repairs to pens and gates.
United Church Women of Stamford plan Fellowship Day May 2 at Central Christian Church. At 1 p.m. a covered-dish luncheon follows a program on Spiritual Security for Today's Families led by theme introducer Mrs. George F. Mood. Rev. Virgil Swope will give the invocation. City music club to provide special music. All women of any denomination and all who wish to attend are welcome. Mrs. Bob Bandeen chairs.
Stamford Garden Club annual flower show at Stamford Country Club April 29 from 5 to 6 pm. Entries by 11 am, judging before 4 pm during a club meeting. Theme Alice in Flower Land with five girls in pastel dresses as hosts. Includes men’s division Camp Fire Girls division, and multiple committee chairmen. Public invited. hospitality cochairmen listed.
John Dyer was elected president of the Methodist Men at St. John's Methodist Church during a Tuesday night supper meeting. Curtis Terry was named vice president and Ben Perry secretary treasurer, with Ryland Gleaton presiding. The program featured 150 to 160 colored slides of the Holy Land and Europe by Rev. Woodrow Adcock, who lectured on his trip visiting 11 countries. Visitors from Paint Creek joined the gathering.
Joe Lambert named district manager at Cisco succeeding Ross J. Dixon who retires due to illness. Lambert, former Lone Star Gas chief clerk in Brownwood, has ten years with the company and succeeds James 3. Duff who moved from Athens after six years as district manager. Duff joined Lone Star Gas in Ballinger in 1941 and is a World War II Air Force navigator.
Stamford postmaster Johnny Britton invites bidders for three old Seth Thomas wall clocks that have hung in the post office since 1917. Bids must be in by 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 29. Also for sale are 16 square yards of used linoleum.
Stamford High School band presented a concert in the school auditorium Friday evening under the direction of William E. Mayes. It was the third in a series of concerts the band has given in recent months. Mrs. Lara Beauchamp returned from a two week visit in Roswell New Mexico with her daughter Mrs. Jess Bonds and family.
Jack Tidwell was officially sworn in by Mayor Clyde Westfall as Stamford's new chief of police. He urged full cooperation from all city departments and council members to run the police department smoothly and efficiently. Incoming councilmen Glenn Hull and James Lindsey missed the meeting and were scheduled to be sworn in May 2. Runoff election had a record 1480 votes. two job applications were approved for city departments. water supply at Leeders noted as only 20 to 30 days.
Judge Isaac O Newton of Seymour will draft the charter and bylaws for the Highway 277 Association Wichita Falls to Abilene. The group met April 18 at Munday grade school with A C Humphrey of Stamford, Palmer Massey of Childress, and Jake Roberts of Abilene attending. The aim is highway improvement and better traffic conditions to boost tourism, with talks on widening and resurfacing needs.
Resident Engineer Joe R. Kemble of Freese and Nichols reports the Paint Creek dam near Stamford is 45 percent finished. Clearance of the reservoir basin by Thompson and Hill is advancing. rain delayed work on the creek channel core trench and pump station foundation.
Reynolds Street School hosts a book bazaar themed May Fete at 6:30 p.m. May 1 on the high school football field. Grades present Mother Goose, a circus, Fairies and Fantasy, Robin Hood, Baseball. sixth grade sells books and concessions. Tickets 15 and 35 cents. PTA leads planning with Mrs. Vernon Lovvorn as theme chair and Mrs. George Rollins in charge of music.
A cemetery cleanup social will take place at Pleasant Valley Cemetery on Thursday May 1. Attendees are invited to bring lunch and help with the cleaning effort. Mr and Mrs Jack Fuqua and Mrs Fuqua’s niece Arlette Micon visited Roger Fuqua in Dallas where he is hospitalized for ulcerated colon and expected to be released home April 26.
Reynolds Street PTA installed new officers in an April 16 ceremony led by Mrs Hollis Haynes. New president Mrs Joe Rosen succeeds Mrs Vernon Lovyern, with Hien Perry as first vice president and W L Lewis as second vice president. Secretary is Mrs F Upshaw and treasurer Mrs R Bettis, while Mrs Verren Lovvern becomes parliamentarian. The meeting featured a program for the second graders and a rhythm band performance, with May Fete planned for May 1 at 6:30 p.m.
At the Stamford Production Credit Association annual meeting held at the Texas Cowboy Reunion grounds 1488 people were fed in about 45 minutes as three chow lines served barbecue beans potato salad pickles relishes plus dessert coffee or Cokes. About 634 were local members from eight counties. 834 were members’ families and guests. The event opened with registration and music then business with J F McCulloch council presiding Virgil P Lee spoke briefly. nominating report by Sego. directors reelected Burson and Reaves. Handsome attendance prizes awarded.
Boyd Fanning of the Snyder Church of Christ told Rotary Club members that the downfall of every character starts at home. He preached during a Gospel series stressing the home as the nation’s foundation and that well educated families produce better citizens.
The Stamford High School junior class will stage its plays on Monday and Tuesday nights May 5 and 6. Rehearsals are underway. Stamford residents Mr and Mrs Oliver Reed Thynell Thompson and Melvin Rosenquist were in Fort Worth for the Capades over the weekend.
