Landscape expert L. W. Ramsey explains border plantings along lot lines. He argues borders provide privacy from curious eyes and screen unsightly views, while enhancing the home with color, shade, and a framed yard image. He advises simple curves and few shrubs on small lots, with selective variety for charm.
The Clean-up Campaign boosted Stamford’s appearance with a $25 prize awarded to the Rotary Club for the northwest zone, recognized for near perfect sanitary improvements. The jury praised overall effort by Rotary Club, American Legion, Music Club, PTA, Exchange Club, Pierian Club, Chamber of Commerce, and city manager Chas. Zug. The PTA zone earned second place, and Mr. Tom Benton’s South Anson Street property was singled out as the cleanest residence.
The government sets April 30 as the deadline for 1932 production loan applications. Eligible farmers who farmed this year or last year may apply with a crop mortgage as security. Landlords must sign a waiver of lien to make mortgages second to the government loan. Applications are free via Stamford Chamber of Commerce, with loan amounts tied to feed seed on hand acreage and equipment.
The program titled The Trial of John Barlycorn was held at the First Baptist Church on Thursday April 14 with Dr Atticus Webb of the Anti-Saloon League in charge. The event aimed to expose liquor evils and promote support for the 18th amendment. Money was pledged to the cause and Rev G S Slover acted as judge in Rev W G Fletcher’s absence due to illness.
Rain registered in Stamford for the first part of the week and Tuesday measured .54 of an inch. Widespread showers brought higher totals in other sections with some vicinities reporting up to an inch.
A. Claude Easterling ex president of the Stamford Chamber of Commerce died at his ranch near Del Rio after months of illness due to anemia. He helped organize the Highland Hereford Breeders association and served as secretary and sales manager. Easterling moved to West Texas 22 years ago and owned 4500 acres on Devil's River.
Judge B. D. Sartin of Wichita Falls launched his bid for congressman at large affirming allegiance to the eighteenth amendment and urging return of public affairs to the common man. The meeting drew over a thousand in hot sun with Hor Brady presiding and introductions by Ray Rector.
At the regular Tuesday meeting the Knights of Pythias lodge conferred the rank of page on several members. A bowling alley committee report was approved to stand until the next gathering. Next Tuesday evening the lodge will begin work on the rank of esquire.
Stamford church notes show 479 present in Sunday School with late arrivals pushing past 500. 158 in Young People services. 8 new members added across two services. Men’s Bible class targets 150 weekly. next Sunday aims set by age group with goals for adults 175 and children 42 or more.
The revival at Church of Christ began last Sunday with Wright Randolph of Spur as evangelist and Roy Hooten of Anson leading the singing. Mr. Randolph spoke to large crowds at morning and evening services. Weekday services run 10 to 11 am and 7 45 pm. Fred Ross preaches Sundays for Spur church and assists the local congregation on weekdays. Rev P W Etheridge addressed the young people class, inviting public attendance at all services.
Miss Norma York took third in charcoal drawing, Miss Nell Box won first in colors, and Miss Doris Adams placed third in colors at the district contest held at Simmons University last Friday. York and Box will represent Stamford High at the state contest in Austin on May 6 and 7.
Mrs Ollie Morgan a Gypsy member is charged with theft including a diamond ring $5.50 in cash and a silk shawl and shirt. Police led a lengthy search through Breckenridge and Stamford tracking the Gypsy party and hidden hides before Morgan confessed and articles were recovered from a feather pillow.
Stamford prepared for the grand jury with about twenty to twenty five felony cases on the docket, the largest since Flour noy took office. Leonard Smith and Olney Ingles face breaking into a box car and stealing groceries. Buster Nichols and Trueman Young charged with multiple robberies and thefts. Arrests by Sheriff Tom Hudson and others followed by recoveries at Smith’s home.
J A Dodson age 32 died Friday at the family home on West Moran street. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at First Baptist Church by Rev. Sam Morris. Survived by wife three daughters Mrs Hayden Fortenberry Knox City Mrs R Lee Holland Monette Dodson and his parents Mr and Mrs J R Dodson of Coryell county. Interment Highland Cemetery with Barrow Undertaking Co in charge. Pallbearers were R E McDonald Frank Owens Jasper Jones Ed Jones Bill Ray Marvin Doss.
R D Knox new Magnolia Petroleum agent in Stamford succeeds Jesse A White. He hails from Stephen ville and moves with wife and two children to the former Clint Brannon home at 1110 Wells Avenue.
Otis Miller reports Jones county may receive a $35,232.04 highway shoulder and ditch widening if the county donates an extra 20 feet of right of way and moves back fences. Only $2,240.00 remains for the work, with county residents urged to attend a mass meeting April 26 to approve terms and deeds.
A three act junior play titled It Happened in Hollywood was staged in the High School Auditorium Friday before a large audience. The cast displayed unusual talent and understanding of roles in what was described as one of the school’s best productions. Mrs Doyle Middleton directed the performance.
The Stamford American Yard and Garden Contest opens after entry deadline with 42 homes across Stamford competing for prizes. Judges will be organized into two teams to score yards over two inspections, first next week and final in July, with averages determining winners. The complete entry list includes Mrs. J Hugh Astin, 403 N Swenson Ave, and many others across N Anson, East Reynolds, Wells Ave, Oliver, and Vanderbilt.
An Odd Fellows meeting hall program featured Jeanette Boston with Clara Mae Jones and Irene Rucker performing violin solos and quintets. Faye Heath led a solo piece and the group closed with "The More We Get Together." Games followed, and members are urged to attend next Tuesday at 8 o'clock.
The will of N. C. Roberts of London bequeaths a $250,000 estate and notably directs a kiss to his divorced wife at the conclusion.
