A. L. Buster elected Rotary president, Burt King vice president, Hamilton Wright secretary. Directors named George Pryor, L. E. Larche, R. F. Townsend, Ted Russell, J. Dyer. J. H. Rutherford re elected, J. K. Brady and Walter McDaniel win city council seats amid 408 votes. Stamford poised for 1927 district convention. Swanson and Hedberg polled notable votes.
Thirteen men completed the Scout Leaders Training Course and will receive certificates. The event featured a lake supper and demonstrations in first aid, flag display, and proper salutes led by Scout patrols under district executive G. N Quire.
All four trustees J. H. Terry E. L. Howard F. B. Ramey and Dolly Payne retained their seats without opposition after the recent school election. Voter turnout was light with about 34 ballots cast.
The Vernon D. Hart post of the American Legion organizes a two day showing of The Lost Battalion at the Alcove Theatre starting Wednesday, April 14. The film recounts the 1918 Argonne stand of a decimated U S unit and its heroic stand against German forces amid hunger, wounds, and constant shell fire.
George McConnell, flying instructor at Stamford aviation school, is recovering from three fractured ribs after a stunt plane crashed in the western part of the city Saturday morning. Teddy Smith was unhurt. The aircraft, worth about 100 dollars, had the wing end broken and a control destroyed. McConnell landed safely.
Hamilton Wright was elected president of the Wesley Brotherhood of St John’s Methodist Church as 33 members join the charter list. E Wason, Cleburne Huston, Reece Pratt named VP secretary and treasurer with Rev R A Stewart presiding. Charter members include F M Locke, R C Thomas, C T Dodson and others as the Brotherhood forms from a church men’s banquet.
The St. John's Methodist church Sunday School reached 630 in attendance last Sunday, with 285 men and boys and 345 women and girls. The Women's group won the contest over the men, while the Men's Brotherhood class reported 105 attendees in a standout showing.
Mr and Mrs Tom Alderson and their little daughter Marjorie of Abilene spent Tuesday in Stamford greeting friends at Gris isom's Store.
Stamford schools superintendent N S Holland has been granted a year of leave to study at Columbia University New York. He will undertake specialized work in school administration with leading teachers, attend this summer, return to Stamford briefly, then resume study in mid September for the long session.
Miss Olivia Hobgood an expression teacher at Simmons University Abi lene attended a high school faculty dinner at the Booth residence hosted by Mr and Mrs Jack Booth. Miss Mary Belle Booth has studied under Miss Hobgood this session.
Stamford’s Spring Exposition drew thousands from Stamford and surrounding towns for a night of lights, music, window displays, and an open autos show on the post office plaza. The Firemen’s Band, West Texas Utilities lighting, and local merchants aided a well orderly, festive scene.
Seniors of the High School presented the play Miss Somebody Fine to a large attentive audience Tuesday night. Interludes featured Mrs White and Mrs Booth with violin selections by Miss Nina Booth. Lead actors Harrison Durret and Miss Minnie Margaret Howard were praised, and the cast included Kathleen Whittington Evelyn Perkins Katharine Tadlock Katherine Lyles Louise Brown Evelyn Shell Eunice Taylor Mary Belle Booth Juanita Bounds Vida Amerson Larry Jim Nichols Dancen Duncan Adrian Box Joe Johnson Floyd Prichard and J M Knowles Jr. The production moves to Stamford municipal auditorium Friday night.
Stamford forms a thirteen thousand five hundred dollar country club fund by selling 100 shares at 150 dollars each. A membership meeting is set to elect temporary officers and choose the club grounds. Upon ground purchase a clubhouse golf course tennis courts bathing beach and other facilities will be built. Committee members include F F Morrow B E Kuykendall Dr F E Hudson and Budley Raines.
Six registered bulls arrive to form a bull circle in Stamford trade territory. The A walld carload, valued around £200 each, was unloaded by the Katy and distributed through Breckenridge Sagerton Hamlin Snyder. The bulls hail from the Sophia Nineteenth Tormentor Strain of Ed C Lassner herd.
J E Jackson proprietor attended a district meeting of M System grocers in Sweetwater Sunday. Thirty two stores were represented. Advertising was a major topic with plans announced for larger newspaper ads to appear in The American. Miss Mikkelson violin teacher at McMurry College Abilene visited the Booth home. Nina Booth studied violin this session.
Mrs Vernon and her children left for Dallas Tuesday for a six weeks stay with her sister Mrs C W Kight.
The Chamber of Commerce and Stamford Rotary Club push to host the 1027 Rotary Convention in Stamford. They invite all district Rotary Clubs to vote for Stamford, aiming to attract about 1,000 delegates and boost local advertising at the Amarillo event later this month. The campaign has secured pledges from several clubs.
A regional group including Stamford Hiambo Rotan Clairmont Pass Tahoka Brownfield and others plans a new highway from Albany to Stamford to Retan and on toward west Texas and New Mexico. The Roswell Fort Worth Waco route would shorten travel between Fort Worth Dallas and Central Texas points. Local leaders met in Hamlin to organize and set up headquarters outside Stamford.
One front of Bryant-Link Company's big department store has received a new coat of blue paint, making the building more attractive. The sign across the front has also been repaired, enhancing the store's overall appearance.
